CHAPTER 41
~3rd Person POV~
It was the last day of Cain's boring Academy Fair. They were reminded by their adviser yesterday to come at the school gate early and help give donations outside the academy.
Of course, knowing Cain. He will not come early and would just sleep more. By the time he went there, he saw that they already went outside.
(Why did I even come here?)
He asked himself.
Anyway, if he said that he is from the Special club as evident by the golden badge with an 'S' engraved in it proves that he is a member, the guards will let him go outside.
He did show his badge to the imperial guards so they let him go outside but they reminded him to follow the limit of the places he can go.
Cain is a man of his words, despite being feared by many. He would follow a rule as much as he can although he just went and watch the other members from afar giving donations to commoners.
As he was watching them, he can't help look at the girl who likes to approach him.
(She's wearing that awful costume again)
He thought to himself.
"Mr.! Mr.!"
He directed his eyes on a young girl pulling his pants.
"...What is it?"
His voice sounds deep and terrifying that can even make an adult cry in fear. He isn't even aware that he is making a scary face right now.
"Can you buy a flower? Please! Please!"
Her tiny voice made Cain kneel down to imitate her height. Her face is a bit messy and her clothes look small compared to her size, some are even patched.
"You...are you not afraid of me?"
Cain asked the little girl which made her shook her head.
"No! You look handsome!"
The little blushed a bit and giggled.
He then remembered the time he was leaning on a tree sleeping. The light brown hair and light brown eye girl tries to touch his hair and even told him he looks handsome.
"You smiled! You look more handsome when you smiled!"
The little girl told Cain who seems surprised. He didn't realize that he is already forming a smile just after thinking of that girl.
"Really?"
"Yes! So would you like to buy some flowers?!"
Her eyes sparkle and push the basket of flowers right infront of his face.
Cain chuckled and slowly put his hand on the girl's head.
"You're a good girl, don't grow up and be like those scary adults alright? Here"
Cain pat the girl's head and gave her a bag of coins. Not just copper coins but silver ones.
"So many money...! My papa and mama will be very happy! My siblings can also get new clothes!"
The girl cheered.
"Here you go!!"
She gave Cain the full basket.
"No, just sell them to others"
Cain removes his hand from the little girl's head.
"Ummm...alright!"
She happily skips away from him.
"Father and mother huh...can't tell if I ever had one"
Cain can't relate to the young girl's delight since he didn't even feel a single affection from both of his parents. A neglectful father and an abusive mother, he doesn't even have siblings too.
"Family? I wonder what does that feel...?"
Cain whispered looking at the sky.
He then went back to the other students giving donation. The girl is now gone.
Not that Cain cares but...he can't keep himself from following that girl.
Suddenly, a commotion came from one of the citizens. That weird girl is following the thief! It looks like she was pressured by them to follow him by mistaking her to be a knight.
"That idiot...!"
(No Cain...stop...)
He tries stopping himself but...
But...
(Cain! Would you like to become my friend?)
He unknowingly bite his lower lip.
As soon as he saw her falling down from a shock, he immediately grab her right in his arms.
As sudden scene flash from his mind.
It was Delie on the ground with wounds and is covered with blood.
"What...what was that?"
He muttered to himself, he was surprised that he almost let go of Delie from his arms.
Even it was just for a second, it seems so real and the scene is still clear from his mind.
Anyway, the first thing he needs to do now is to get her to the infirmary. Cain hurriedly went back inside the academy heading right to the infirmary.
He slams the door which made the nurse jump in surprise.
"Eek! What happen to her?"
She seems surprise to see Cain holding Delie in his arms.
"She had lost conscious"
Cain puts Delie on a bed and can see her sweating.
"It seems like the heat is making it harder for her, I need to change her clothes"
The nurse inspects Delie.
"Sure"
Cain nodded and stand still looking at Delie. The nurse looks at Cain trying to say something but was too intimated to say anything.
"Just say it"
He noticed her uneasiness and told her to say what she wanted to say already.
"Umm...I'm going to undress her so..."
"Yes, so what?"
Cain doesn't understand why he needs to get out.
"But she-"
"...Alright, you won't start until I'm here right? Go on, I'll just come back later"
He gave up and agreed anyway so he went outside the infirmary. He heard his stomach growl, he needs food.
He went to buy some food and immediately went back to the infirmary but as soon as he was about to fully open the door, he heard people talking inside.
It was Delie with full of different people worrying for her. He just peeked inside from outside the door but he stops when he noticed Delie catching his eye.
He stepped back as soon as their eyes met. Cain suddenly had the urge to stay away from her especially after seeing her filled with a bunch of people caring for her and the bloody scene of her.
Why do he even need to go inside? She doesn't need someone like him. Isn't she already happy with others?
"Cain! Where are you going?"
He clicked his tongue after someone familiar called out to him after he got out of the building where the infirmary is located.
"You again"
It was Angeal, no Eros. He is giving Cain a creepy smile, one that is obviously a fake one.
"I saw you rushing inside the infirmary, I thought you didn't care about others...why did you do that?"
"Do I need permission from you?"
The two of them are glaring daggers at each other right now.
"Don't get in my way, Cain"
Cain knew it. This guys is using that girl like how he used him before too.
"Are you not tired of using people? Angeal"
Eros widened his eyes after Cain speaks his real name.
"You...you plan on exposing me?"
Eros gritted his teeth showing his angry emotion once more.
"Who knows? If you keep being like that, maybe you'll be exposed by someone soon"
Cain chuckles.
"What did you say?"
Eros started to walk towards Cain who just keeps looking at him right in the eye. Eros is so mad right now that his eyes are turning purple because of his power.
"Be careful, your eyes are tuning purpl-"
Eros grabs Cain's collar, they are now face to face since the two of them are at the same height.
"Don't mock me, Cain"
"Mock you? Mock you for being your father's puppet?"
That's the last straw for Eros, he punch Cain in the face which cause Cain's right cheek to redden.
"Don't say that! You know why I'm doing this"
Cain touch his redden cheek and gave Eros a heavy glare.
"Then I'll be looking forward to that, I still won't forget what you did to me"
Cain wipes the small blood flowing down from his mouth.
"Cai-"
Eros was about to say something when they heard a familiar voice.
"Cain!"
It was Delie looking for Cain everywhere.
(Did she went out just to follow me?)
Cain sighed.
"Looks like she's looking for you, you better go"
Eros also sighed and leave but his eyes looks in pain which he, himself, doesn't know the reason why.
Cain went straight to Delie until he heard her called him 'stupid'. She apologized to him and even asked what happen to the bruise in his cheek.
He told her that he is used to it but Cain felt a strange feeling where his heart suddenly beats faster than normal when she told Cain that she wants to know the real him and that she wants to understand him. A bit cheesy for Cain but it did made him skip a beat although he won't admit it no matter what.
"So that means we're friends now?"
Delie's eyes sparkle which made Cain gave her a look similar to that of a disgust.
Then he remembers the scene that flashed in his mind. The bloody Delie on the ground like it already happened before.
"No way"
Cain feels complicated and confused right now as he tries to find a way to avoid her but he can't.

~Delie's POV~
I've been trying to follow Cain yesterday but he is so good at escaping. I also saw the heroine too! And she's really pretty! Definitely deserving of her title 'the heroine'. But after seeing her, a sudden scene suddenly flashed in my mind.
No...it's more like a memory of someone else to be honest. Not mine neither the original Delie's and the place looks very old compared to now. I mean I'm living a fantasy like Victorian era world but the place looks like it took about a hundred years ago.
"Ouch!"
As I was deep in thought, someone smack a book in my head.
"Did you finish reading the whole chapter?"
It was Valerie with a glasses on. She looks stunning but she looks scarier than before.
"No..."
I replied quietly.
"Then finish it before you daydream"
Valerie told me before putting down the book she used to smack my head.
"But the fair just ended yesterday, can't we study tomorrow?"
I gave Valerie my best puppy eyes even winking both of my eyes in a fast pace but she just look at me like 'no'.
"Aren't you the one who drag me here earlier when you saw your test scores?"
I gulped remembering earlier when I saw my score from the notice board. I mean it was not that bad but I know I can still improve it so I ask Valerie to tutor me.
Of course, the first place goes to the male lead and the second goes to Cain which I expected. Valerie is on the top ten of the whole first years.
Besides, the reason why I want to have a high grade is because of the reputation. This world is not different from mine in my previous life.
People like to judge your intelligence by how high your grade is but I'm not saying that to all people! It's just...people can't just help judge others right.
Wow, coming from you Delie! I know know. But think about it...
"Ouch! Valerie!"
Valerie smacks my head again.
"Focus"
Valerie told me without looking right into my face.
"Yes..."
I sighed and try to read again.
"How about you? Are you done with solving?"
I turn my head to look at Valerie asking Kayle.
Kayle is a lot worse than any of us. He saw his name in the bottom ten of the first years when the two of us look at the results.
He also went with me when I dragged Valerie inside the library earlier.
"Wait...I'm not done yet!"
Kayle tries to hide the notebook he is using to solve equations.
"Give me that, I know you've been thinking of other things when I read your mi-"
Valerie opens the notebook and saw a bunch of doodles of dresses and suits. She also saw a funny doodle of her with a text 'grass colored nerdy girl'.
Kayle looks away and I tried suppressing my laugh. Valerie closes the book and immediately smack it into Kayle's head.
"Ouch! Hey!"
"Stop messing around"
Valerie gave Kayle a straight face which made Kayle took the notebook instantly and tries solving the problems in it.
"This is so hard! Why do we need to solve problems when using gifts?!"
Kayle complained.
"I don't know, ask the emperor then"
Valerie told Kayle who just mumbled.
After an hour, I finally finished reading the chapter. I asked Valerie to let me have a break and she agreed.
"Wait, Delie! Me too!"
Kayle pulled my uniform and gave me his most pleading eyes.
"Oh no you don't! You need to finish solving all of these"
Valerie tries to pull Kayle back to his seat.
"Delie..."
Kayle begged by pulling my uniform harder.
"Kayle let go! My uniform will tear!"
I tried removing his hand from my uniform.
He's like a child clinging to his mother who went to his first day of school and the next thing you knew, you left him with his teacher and he doesn't want me to go.
"Shhhh!!"
A librarian student told us to keep quiet.
"Sorry...ummm...Valerie, will you let Kayle take a break after he solve all of those?"
Valerie nodded.
"Sure"
"Come on Kayle, just solve all of those"
I patted his head and led him back to his chair.
"...Fine!"
He pouted and hurriedly solve the problems as fast as he can.
I sighed.
He really acts like a baby!
Anyway, I need to go and find some books I can borrow from the library. I want to find more about the dragons! I mean I saw one in my mind yesterday when I met the heroine.
Maybe I can find an answer here!
"I forgot, our friends will be here later!"
Valerie told me before I finally leave the two of them alone.
"Okay! I'll be back soon!"
I happily skipped to the library avoiding to make a loud noise so that the librarian won't shush me.
"Dragons...dragons..."
Pfft. I remember a show named 'How to train your Dragons'! I mean the dragons there are so cute! I even have a keychain of it in my past life. The dragon from that weird flashing scene is scary though.
Huh? There's a missing book here!
I saw a large empty space between a thousand of books and it was exactly when I heard a familiar voice of someone weeping.
Who is that? I shouldn't eavesdrop!
I tried to get away but my curiousity came back when I heard a familiar name.
"It's alright Lady Daphne! I'm sure the prince really wants to be with you!
I let out a deep breath and finally gave in to peek at the empty space.
"No...I sent a letter to him to meet me at the Match-up event, but he told me he won't come even though all the member of the imperial families will be there together with their wives and fiancees"
Well in the Match-Up event according to the novel is a match that the third years and fourth years of the academy can join. Sophomores and a freshman like me can't join, we can only watch in the Bogdan Academy's arena.
Third years and fourth years from the other two empires will also go here for the event since Bogdan empire is the founder of that event and it will be held here every year. The winner will get a recommendation and will instanly be granted a title by the emperors.
Brother and Arthur will joining this year so I hope they enjoy it. In the novel, the crown prince didn't even show himself in the first two years. When Cordelia entered, they even sparred that's when Daphne discovered who he was when he exposed himself as the crown prince to everyone.
Daphne hope and hope for the crown prince to meet her but he never did or instead is that she doesn't know he is Eros. She is always alone sitting on the top of the arena without the prince by her side.

Daphne told her friends--followers before leaving them.
"You know what? I pity her, she's too blinded by love!"
"What? She's a spoiled duke's daughter just because she's the crown prince's fiancee, she thinks he can give his love to her?"
"You're right, but she looks so desperate for him...it's a bit embarassing"
"I know but without her, we won't get free expensive things from her! Better let her do what she wants"
The two followers snickered before leaving.
I can feel my face burning in rage.
How can they say that to their friend?!
"Now those were some pretentious friends, no wonder having friends are troublesome"
Cain was already beside me.
"Now who's eavesdropping too"
I narrowed my eyes to him to which he ignored.
"You know, getting yourself involve in other people's affairs is not good"
He gently said not even looking at me.

"Then what do you call what you are doing right now?"

"I understand..."
Then a light bulb pops out from my mind.
"Saying all these things for me..."
I slowly look at Cain with my eyes sparkling. Cain avert his eyes from me which seems like he knows what I'm going to say.
"Are you caring for me?"
My eyes turn into puppy eyed ones. He looks detested because of what I asked.
"No, it's just annoying when someone tries to intrude into someone's life"
He sounds like he is talking about someone and I guess it was the male lead and me for following him.
"What are you here anyway? Did you follow me?"
I widened my eyes and gave him a surprised pikachu face.
"No, am I not welcome to be inside the library?"
He bluntly said.
"Oh..."
"I just went here to bring a book back"
The empty space earlier is actually the place where the book Cain is holding originally is placed.
"So that's why there is a large empty space there"
I murmured.
"How about you? What are you doing here?"
I am quite surprised when Cain asked me that. I mean he asked me a few questions before but this time it is a new topic and he is the one who asked me first.

Does that mean we are getting close?!
"Hey"
He snaps his fingers infront of me.
"Oh! Umm...studying?"
I sratch my head and grin.
"Why does that sound like a question?"
He wonders.
Come to think of it, Cain is really smart right academically? He is ranked second in the whole first years! Should I ask him to teach me?
"Anyway, I need to go ba-"
I tugged his uniform with expecting eyes. He looks annoyed which I am used to seeing a lot.
"Can you study with me?"
"...What?"
He narrowed his eyes with a darken face.
"You know teach me about some subjects!"
And so that I can get friendship points from you.
"And why would I do that?"
"Because we're friends!"
My grin grew wider that I didn't realize that I look very creepy.
"Who said we are friends?"
He removes my hand from his uniform. I didn't realize that he is really tall for his age. I think he is in the same height as my brother and Arthur already even though he is only a first year.
"You're really tall! You have the same height as Eros!"
I Cain see a vein grew from his face after I mentioned the male lead's fake name.

Cain crosses his arms.
I gulped.
I forgot that Cain doesn't know that I am aware of Eros's true identity.
"Because...you two are from the Special club?"
I clap my hands and smile trying to hide my uneasiness.
He narrowed his eyes suspiciously.
Come on man! Just believe me! I need to change the subject.
I look back to the book he brought back and saw the title on the spine part 'Ancient Dragons'. This is the book I've been looking for!
"I didn't know you like reading things about this!"
I grab the book that Cain put in the space earlier.
"I'm just curious"
I narrowed my eyes to him suspiciously.
"Why are you looking at me like that?"
He must realized that I tried imitating his look earlier.
"Nothing"
I narrowed my eyes even more.
"...Listen, I--"
I can see that he will tell me that he will leave. It was my intention to grab his uniform once more but I grab his right arm instead using both of my hands.
"Don't leave yet! Didn't you tell me that you will study with me?"
He was suprised but what I said.
"Since when did I tell you tha-"
"Delie?"
Another familiar voice came from my right direction. That voice!!
I slowly look at him and it was indeed him! Arthur!?
"Umm..."
He looks confused when he saw me pulling Cain's arm.
Oh no, this is really embarassing!
"Let go"
Cain remove my arms from his and quickly walk away but before that, I can see him and Arthur stare at each other for about five seconds and there is indeed a tension.
"Wait, Cain!"
Ah he already left. I crossed my arms and sigh.
Next time then!
"Delie..."
I turn to look back at Arthur now with a surprised face.
"Arthur!"
He walk towards me looking uneasy.
"I...I didn't know you two are close"
"Well, he did saved me so many times! And..."
He will be the cause of my death in thw future...
"That's why I consider him as my friend, I think"
Befriending the villain is a lot harder than I thought. Lucky for Cordelia who he fell for easily! I wish I have the impact of a heroine!
"I see"
He looks down with a forced smile.
"Is there something you need?"
I asked him.
"Listen, I am one of the participants of the Match-Up event and I want you to give me an embroided handkerchief as a good luck..."
Is he saying that he wants to have an embroided handkerchief from me?! But...but isn't that what lovers and boys with fiancees do?

I replied to him quietly.
He seems happy that I told him that.
"Then I'll be waiting"
He smiled to me.

I'm sorry Arthur!!

He was interrupted by someone wrapping his arms to my waist from behind.
"It's Arthur! What are you doing with my Delie?"
Kayle!
"Who are you calling your Delie?!"
I headbutt his face using the back of my head. He must teleported here.
"Kayle, who said you're done?"
We heard Valerie's voice from behind and Kayle looks at her scared then was dragged by Valerie back.
"Delie, your break is done too let's go back"
She bowed at Arthur before dragging Kayle away begging for her to let him go.
"Then, I'll be going"
I bowed my head to Arthur who nodded with smile.

We head back to the table where we are are studying when we saw Anne rushing to me and Valerie.
"Anne?"
"Guys, I need your help!!"
