Charlottesville Police Department
N's POV
Waking up surrounded by darkness, nothing in sight other than the door and the walls. Being in jail is a nightmare for me, it feels like I let everyone down. I was supposed to avenge all the African Americans that got mistreated by the police. Now I'm trapped in the system and who knows when I'm getting out. It has only been one day since I got put into confinement, but it feels like a lifetime.
The one being that I couldn't stop dreaming or thinking about is Kalisha. I miss her so much and she's the reason why I'm not freaking out right now. But once she finds out that I'm in jail, I can already tell that she will be angry and disappointed. I can't blame her if she feels that way. Giving all my time and attention to these racist cops that I always neglect the woman I love the most. I'm so stupid and I don't know what's wrong with me.
I just want to see her again and make things right. Too much damage was caused by me, I regret letting my anger get the better of me. I'm done getting revenge on people who ruined my life. My parents wouldn't be proud to see their son ending up in jail. Just thinking about it is making me tear up.
At least the Chief of Police was nice enough to take care of my wounds. My body doesn't hurt as much now. Plus, I'm thankful that Commissioner Adams didn't bother or attack me while I was in confinement. Usually, I don't fear any human beings, but the commissioner is insane and always prepared to kill. I'm still shaken up by how much power he had over me. If those policemen didn't arrive, I would have perished.
I just hope that his power runs out and some justice can get served. Originally, all I wanted to do is kill the guy who ruined my life. But since I couldn't kill him, all I ask for is for him to face the consequences. Not just a slap on the wrist, but a punishment that will make him question everything he has done in his life. I hope that he gets to see the errors of his ways. One day, I can live life peacefully and get freedom.
A few seconds later, I hear the door open. I don't know who is behind that door. Hopefully, it isn't Commissioner Adams. I'm afraid that he's going to start torturing or possibly kill me. Getting a good glance at who it is, I'm relieved that it's the Chief of Police.
"Get up, several important individuals are waiting for you." She tells me, giving me a blank stare and crossing her arms. Making it hard for me to decipher what she means by that.
I get up off the floor and walk slowly towards her. All of the lights are turned off, which is good. But I'm still worried about what she told me. Who exactly is waiting for me? What do they want from me? My mind continues to think that it might be Commissioner Adams and his gang of officers ready to give me the death penalty.
I look at the Chief to read her facial expression while we walk and it's still blank. There are several questions that I wanted to ask her, but I didn't want to make things uncomfortable than it already was.
As we get closer to the front door, I hear a lot of murmuring and pictures snapping going on from outside. I am so lost on what is happening.
"Are you ready?" She asks me and gives me a small smile. I shrug my shoulders since I am confused. Plus, she's holding my voice modulation machine in her hands so I couldn't respond to her.
She uncuffs me and opens the door; the cold air from outside blast all over my body. But what I witnessed left me speechless. I see Commissioner Adams mean mugging me and he has an arm cast on. Then, I noticed several black cars and a limo. Guys are wearing black suits, sunglasses, and holding guns protecting this one man. I don't know who this man is, but judging by the number of bodyguards he has, he is important. Then, there's an abundance of regular people, news reporters, doctors, police officers, and many more surrounding the area.
But there's one being that I couldn't take my eyes off of and that is Kalisha. She also brought her friends, bodyguards, and family members. But my main focus is on her and I didn't waste any time to hug and kiss her. There are a ton of "aww's" and photos taken, but I didn't pay attention to the outside world. Being close and intimate with the love of my life again is what matters to me the most.
"I'm so sorry, my love," I tell her, I begin to sob.
"Aww, Njau, there's no need to apologize." She responds, rubbing the back of my head and comforting me.
"But I must apologize for going against you and constantly abandoning you. Now look at me; my face and body are messed up and I ended up in jail. I disappointed you and everyone who counted on me to bring change. All I brought was shame and I don't blame you for being mad at me." I said the tears continue to fall.
"Babe, I'm not mad at you." She tells me, which was shocking to find out.
"You're not?" I ask, she wiped my tears away with a tiny cloth.
"I was never mad at you. You've been through so much in your life that you couldn't hold back all the anger and revenge inside. You never disappoint me. Even with your scars, you're still beautiful to me. So you have nothing to be ashamed of," she replies and hugs me, I put my head on her shoulder. Then, the rest of the family comes to hug us and I'm glad to see them all.
"Njau?" I hear someone call my name. They all stop hugging me. I take a look at who it is and it's the Caucasian man with a lot of bodyguards surrounding him. Amanda hands me the voice modulation machine, so that I may speak.
"Yeah?" I ask, still confused about who he is.
"I'm President Jones, it's nice to finally meet you." He introduced himself. I'm shocked that the president came. I wonder what's going on because the president wouldn't visit the police department on an average day.
"I know you're shocked right now and honestly, I'm surprised that I even decided to come. But I witnessed all the videos and heard everything that you went, I'm so sorry that you had to go through that. Are you okay?" He asks with a concerned look.
"All I want to know is, what is going on?" I ask.
"Yesterday, I made a public announcement that I'm going to help you get your freedom back. Also, I provided a new law that ensures that all vampires are citizens of the United States." He reveals. I'm lost for words, I wasn't expecting the president to help any vampires especially me. I don't even know how to respond.
"Umm... Wow! That's so generous of you. I don't know what else to say." I said, struggling to find the right words.
"No problem. But before I let you free, you and Commissioner Adams have to apologize right now." He disclosed.
"WHAT?!" I freak out. Cannot believe that the president wants me to apologize to the man that ruined my life. What makes him think that I'm going to apologize to him? Looking at the Commissioner right now, it doesn't seem like he wants to apologize to me.
"I know you two have a bad history with each other, which caused all this panic going on in Virginia and around the around. But I think it's time that this anger and hate should end. It only caused more damage and pain than healing. Also, if both of you refuse to apologize then you're going straight to prison without parole. I'm being dead serious!" He explains. He has a stone-cold face, expecting us to go ahead and apologize.
Even though I don't want to apologize to him, I can't end up in prison. The officers in prison treat African Americans as slaves. They are going to treat me a billion times worse since I'm an African vampire.
I sigh and get closer to Commissioner Adams. There are news reporters and a lot of guns following my direction. I stop walking and stand six feet apart from him so that people won't think I'm trying to attack. Plus, I don't want him near me.
Looking at his eyes, he is filled with rage and is itching to kill me at any moment. Thank goodness, there are a bunch of witnesses and higher-ups watching his every move. Letting out another sigh before I speak.
"Deep down, I don't want to apologize. You made my life a living hell. There was never a moment when I wanted to hurt and kill you so bad. I constantly had nightmares about that incident and how you were going to torture me. I never feared a human before, but you showed me how fucked up humans can be. I'm shocked that you're not bothered by all the terrible shit that you've committed. Just looking at your face right now; you don't have any remorse about killing my parents, Ahti, Jymia, and so many African Americans. You bring shame to police officers, Caucasians, men, America, and human beings." I let out my frustrations. Taking a quick breather to calm me and not let anger take control.
"Never thought I would ever say this, but I apologize. I apologize for letting my anger get the better of me and holding on to past grudges. I am sorry for killing those two officers. They weren't involved in the incident and I didn't give them a chance to continue living life. I feel bad for killing Mike Benson and his family. I feel terrible for causing so much damage and pain to Virginia. Lastly, I apologize for hurting and trying to kill Commissioner Adams. Very selfish of me to focus on my issues than worrying about others. Everyone in life is hurting, but I mostly paid attention to myself. I will be more considerate and not cause harm anymore. I'm sorry." I apologized, which is harder than what I intended it to be. A lot of people teared up and felt sorry for me. Now I'm waiting to see if he will apologize as well.
"I'm mad at everyone right now!" He yells out, then a lot of murmuring and gasps are made.
"What do you mean?" President Jones asks, raising his brows.
"I hate how everyone is sympathizing with a vampire. A vampire for crying out loud! What makes him worthy of getting freedom when he just confessed to killing several officers? If this was an average African American human male that committed the same crimes he did, that man wouldn't get all this special treatment. Some black guys are still in prison that committed much worse crimes or haven't done anything and I don't see people feeling sorry for them." He lashes out.
"Plus are you telling me that a vampire matters more than a human? Look at what he did to my arm, he broke it and I won't be able to move it for a long time now. Also, everyone here is going against God. You do know that vampires are demons. That explains why they don't believe in God or can't go near a church. So you all are worshipping the devil if you support these vampires. Good luck trying to ask God for forgiveness, because you all are going to burn in hell now." He tries manipulating and putting fear into people, but no one is responding. Then, he looks at me.
"As for you, Njau, I'm not going to apologize to you. I don't care if the president is here, you don't deserve my forgiveness. Do you think I'm going to change the way I am? This ain't no movie where the enemies work out their differences and become friends all of a sudden. No, this is real life. I still hate you and your kind. You said that I ruined your life, that doesn't compare to all the torment I received from black people. You certainly added to my torture as I lost everything. Heck, now my wife wants to divorce because of you. I don't regret killing your parents, because they deserve to die. I don't feel sorry for your vampire friends that got killed. All ugly creatures should die, especially you!" He barks.
He pulls out a sharp wooden crucifix. Everyone in the crowd shrieks when they noticed the weapon. He comes rushing towards me, letting the sharp and pointy end of the weapon face my direction. Then, several tasers strike him. He drops the crucifix as his body is shaking. After that, he drops to the ground. The Chief of Police, Officer Durant, and Officer Jordan come to arrest him.
"Commissioner Adams is all taken care of, so nothing to worry about," Amanda announced. Then, everyone starts to cheer and clap. I'm relieved, but still in shock that he tried to kill me again and I apologized to him.
"Get him up, I got something to say to him before I give his punishments." The president commanded. The three officers help him out, while he's still stumbling.
"When I first assigned you as Commissioner, I thought you were the perfect person for the job. Your record was clean, you've worked for Charlottesville Police Department for many decades, and I thought you were going to make this place better. But you made me and everyone in Virginia look like fools. I can't believe that you had the nerve to disrespect the entire African American and the vampire community. I regret ever choosing you as Commissioner. You will be in prison for a long time now. Don't expect me or anyone to bail you out. Your life is over and you should have thought twice before exposing how evil you are. Send him to prison and get him out of my sight!" He demanded. All three of the officers take him away.
"I'm so sorry you had to go through that. Are you okay?" The president asked me.
"Yeah, I'm okay. Just a bit stunned by everything that went on. Thank you for helping me so much." I said, smiling at him.
"Don't thank me yet, there's still one last thing that needs to be accomplished before I let you go. Do you have the money?" He asks.
"What money?" I ask, feeling confused about what's going on.
"Yeah, we have the twenty-five million dollars." Kalisha answers. My mouth drops when she said that.
"Twenty-five million dollars? Isn't that too much to bail out one individual? Are you sure you all can recover from giving away twenty-five million?" I ask her.
"Yes, Njau. Did you forget that we're Nigerian royalty? We have money that can last for an eternity. Plus, we all wanted to help bail you out. You are so kind and helpful to all of us that we wanted to repay you. Also, you're a part of our family now and we all must help one another. You are special to everyone. I love you so much and I never want to see my man get hurt again or sent to prison." She tells me. Kissing me and I didn't want it to end, but her driver opened five-car trunks with big black briefcases. We stopped kissing so that she can get them.
Then, I noticed a bunch of people lining up near us including the president and Amanda Brack returning. Kalisha hands three briefcases to the president.
"So this briefcase will go to the court to help settle your bail, another will go to Amanda for the police department, and this one will go to the government to pay off all the damages that happened during the riot. For the rest of the briefcases, the money will split and be given to the loved ones of the deceased officers. After that, you are free to go." The president said.
"Also, I hired the best doctors and surgeons to fix your wounds and your slitted tongue. I made sure that after your surgery, there are plenty of night jobs that are happy to hire you and your vampire friends. Is there anything else you want me to give you? You deserve it after suffering for so long." He asks me. I still can't believe that the president is helping me out, this is surreal. But I know what I want, so I whispered to his ear and let him know. He nods his head in agreement. I went back to Kalisha and her family.
"Here's your money ma'am and I'm so sorry for your loss," Kalisha said as she tries to give a woman her money.
"I don't want any money or special treatment. Please, keep everything. Can I say something to Njau?" She asks her.
"Go right ahead"
"I know you don't know me. Honestly, this is my first time seeing you. But I'm Lea Johnson, the girlfriend of Chris Hudson." She reveals. I don't even know what to say or do, because I'm the one that killed him. I'm afraid and worried about how she's going to feel confronting the man that killed her boyfriend.
"I don't even know what to say, because apologizing won't help," I said.
"No need to apologize. I forgive you." She said and hugs me. I'm lost more than ever.
"Why are you forgiving me? I did kill your boyfriend." I tried reminding her.
"I know you did, but I'm not mad at you. It's not good to hold onto grudges and I wanted to make amends with you. Plus, it would put me at ease if I forgave you. I do miss my boyfriend very much and I wish he was still alive. But to live a happy life, I need to forgive the ones who hurt me the most. I hope you can forgive my apology. If my boyfriend hurt you in any way, he apologizes as well." She confesses and doesn't let go of me.
"Honestly, I feel bad for killing your boyfriend. He was nice and cared about me. But sadly, he was associated with a racist cop that shot me multiple times. So it's not his fault. If I can turn back time, I would have just let your boyfriend go. But I appreciate you for forgiving me. It takes a lot of power to forgive a killer, especially for a loved one. Are you sure you don't need anything to ease your pain?" I ask her.
"No, forgiving you is all I need. I wish you well in life. I hope you continue to bring awareness and change. My boyfriend is smiling right now at you. Take care of yourself and make sure to always love your girlfriend." She tells me and let's go.
"I will. Take care of yourself as well." I tell her and she waves goodbye.
All the car trucks get closed as all the loved ones of the deceased officers got their money.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, I'm happy to announce that Njau is now a free citizen of the United States. No more of you suffering. You and your vampire crew will enjoy American life with peace and joy. If anyone tries to bother or harm either of you all, don't be afraid to call or message the White House. We will take care of and protect you at all costs. The Vampires Citizens Act will be put into full force next year. Right now, get out of here and enjoy life." He announced and everyone celebrated.
"Thank you, Mr. President. You went above and beyond for me. I appreciate everything that you've done." I tell him.
"Don't mention it. Now leave before I change my mind." He warns me and a lot of people started to chuckle.
"Let's get you back home, Njau. I love you so much." Kalisha tells me.
"I love you too"
