Levi's POV.
Duck! Zeke screamed. I quickly ducked down as two bullets ripped through the hood of the car we were hiding behind. When did you get here? I brought you more guns! Zeke smilied and held up a duffel bag. Look we all know how awesome I am but I'm going to need a little help taking down five guys with automatics. Where the fuck is Aiden? He was supposed to have these guys surrounded ten minutes ago. Zeke pulled a nine millimeter and some ammo out of his duffel bag and pressed it into my hand. "Something went wrong, We have to hold them off" he said with a desperate look on his face that was not reassuring. Your fifteen your not holding anyone off and you shouldn't be in a gunfight. I could feel my heart racing and my brain starting to panic. I didn't want to be responsible for the camp leaders brother. I slowed my breathing and tried to focus on the small sounds. I could hear Zeke breathing rapidly, I listened to the gunfire separating the sounds. I could tell there were five shooters, two had automatic weapons and three had pistols that they had to stop and reload. I could tell exactly where the automatic weapons were. Ever since my change it was like everything was clearer. My vision, my hearing and I was fast very fast. When I heard two pistols reloading I ran from behind the truck straight towards one and shot him in the head as he raised his weapon after diving into his covered hiding spot I shot the guy with the automatic closest to me. Before I could pick out my third target more gunfire started coming from behind. Aiden had finally arrived with the Calvary. Zeke and I were only meant to be a distraction. I kept my head down so I didn't get mistaken for the enemy. The gunfire slowed down and aidens face came into view above my hiding spot. Hey little brother you having fun down there.
Aiden's shaggy blonde hair fell over this eyes as he looked down at me, I didn't know how he saw anything with it like that. I preferred to keep mine shaved. It also helped everyone tell Aiden and I apart. Even though he called me little brother it was pretty evident that we were twins, Aiden was also a changling like me. We were both bitten by the same person and went to the same hospital. We had no idea how bad everything was going to get at the time. The doctors thought we were some kind of medical breakthrough when we didn't turn. Then reports came in of other changlings becoming violent. We weren't immune to the virus it had mutated our cells into something not exactly human. The hospital was going to put us down but Aiden and his friend Aaron got us out before it happened. Some people didn't take well to changlings. They were either envious that we didn't change or they were scared that we would at any second. Some people even started getting bit on purpose to see what would happen, it never went well. Aiden and I were the only two I knew about or had ever come across but we heard stories that were horrifying. It seemed some changlings were more animal than human.
Earth to Levi, you alive down there? Aiden snapped his fingers in front of my face. Hello!
I pushed his hand from my face and stood up. What took you so long I asked? Aiden smiled he stepped aside so I could see what was going on behind him. There was a group of seven women all kneeling on the ground. Our people were surrounding them. I was confused the group we had been tracking was small maybe five men. They had stolen a lot of our guns and we tracked them to this building. Who are they? I asked. We found them on the road and we took them. I looked at Aiden who was smirking and back at the group. It had been a month since the emergency broadcasts had started. People started to fall apart, these women were dirty with ratted hair. They looked like they were starving. Were they alone? I asked. No, some tried to fight back and got themselves shot. I knew why Aiden had taken them. Gared didn't allow rape or stealing in the camp but you could get away with anything else. Bribery, blackmail, any sort of deal you could think of. Prisoners were always welcome, the camp always needed new solders. They all looked ready to take a bribe and I would guess most of their dead were men. Zeke ran up to us, about time you got here. I was about to have to come and save Levi's ass. Zeke laughed a little and smiled at us. When we didn't smile back he said let's get all our weapons and get the fuck out of here. We loaded the guns in one truck and the women in the other. We were going to have to drive through the night to get get back to camp. We had taken most of the guns to get back all the guns that had been stolen leaving the camp with minimal firepower.
Someone was shaking my shoulder, Levi it's time for second shift to drive. When I opened my eyes he flinched away from me. I knew my eyes were glowing they always did at night. I was used to people's reactions and didn't pay him any mind. Even people who had known and lived with me since my change still weren't used to my eyes or all the other things Aiden and I could do. I learned not to take it personally, I freaked myself out sometimes.
Aiden and I drove the trucks through the night. Being changlings we could see a lot better at night. Aiden didn't have actual night vision like I do but he can still see better than a human can and the roads were littered with debri and abandoned cars. We pulled into camp as the sun was rising. People were starting to crawl out of tents and trucks to get the breakfast fire going and do the morning patrols. We parked our trucks in the camp circle and unloaded the guns and prisoners. Guns went back to the storage RV. Gared had the guard after the theft I was sure I wouldn't ever see that guard again.
Aiden and Zeke took the women to Gerad he would tell them the rules of camp and what their rights were. Basically none if they wanted food and a place to sleep that wasn't tired to a tree they were going to have to trade, have some kind of skill or work. I knew exactly where Aiden would be spending the night. I sat in the cab of my truck sipping some rum and watching my twin talk to one of the women. He was different since his change in so many ways. It felt like your body was as much in control as your mind. It moved without permission. It was hard to keep emotions in check. It had also saved his ass on countless occasions. If he concentrated he could hear conversations anywhere in there camp even inside cars and campers. He could hear animals in the woods and smell what they were. It was still all so new it was frightening at times even to himself. Aiden had the same changes as him they differed in two ways. Aiden had elongated canines, like fangs. They weren't noticeable unless he smiled at you. He also didn't have night vision so his eyes glowed less brightly at night. He still saw ten times better than before the change. He was way more intense and angered easily. I couldn't figure out if it was the change or the apocalypse that made Aiden cold these days. I understand why some people are scared of us.
Gerard walked up to me and handed me his cigar. I took a long drag off it. How'd it go yesterday. It was alright, no ones dead I answered. Are you going to be ready for the scavenge trip in a couple days we are running low on canned food again. I'll be ready I said as I handed his cigar back. He walked off back to car. I shut the door to my truck and laid back and looked up through the sunroof at morning light.
