Chapter 221 - The Blanket Party

After about an hour passed, Adam and Bryan had finished organizing their belongings.

"This should do." [Bryan]

He looked proudly at their bunk beds. The blankets and thin layer that was labeled as a mattress were perfectly aligned. They hung their uniform on a hook, and all the towels and clothing were properly folded and packaged within a box at the foot of the bed.

"Inspection!" [???]

A loud voice echoed from the entrance of the tent, startling every soldier inside.

("It's the senior officer!") [Bryan]

All soldiers stiffened up and stood up straight. Seeing that, Adam and Bryan also followed suit.

"…" [Senior Officer]

He slowly walked through the tent, taking moments to inspect the soldiers' belongings.

"What's this?" [Senior Officer]

He stopped midway through the tent, staring directly at a random soldier.

"What do you mean, sir?" [Anxious Soldier]

The senior officer pointed at the bed.

"The blanket isn't straightened out!" [Senior Officer]

Hearing that, the soldier quickly patted the blanket down until it there was no wrinkles to be seen.

"You think that's all?! Your jacket is crooked!" [Senior Officer]

Pointing at the jacket hanging off the side of the bed, Adam could see that it was only slightly tilted.

"Why is your footlocker unlocked?!" [Senior Officer]

He started berating the poor soldier for the smallest things. It was only until the soldier's face looked red with frustration that the officer continued moving down the tent.

("Oh wow.") [Adam]

Adam felt a bit nervous as the officer came closer. Of course, there were a few more times that another random solder was picked on. It delayed the time before the officer reached Adam, but it only worried him more.

"Hm…" [Senior Officer]

He finally arrived before Adam. Locking eyes with the officer, Adam felt as if he could hear his own heartbeat.

"...Acceptable." [Senior Officer]

Without taking much of a glance, the officer left the tent. It garnered a breath of relief from every soldier in the tent, but some of them looked at Adam with hostility.

"Why didn't he get yelled at? The officer didn't so much as look through his stuff…!" [Angered Soldier]

The soldiers whispered among themselves. It appeared they were unsatisfied with the treatment they received in comparison to Adam.

"I don't think they like you very much." [Krino]

("Ya think?") [Adam]

The rest of the day went quietly until it was time to sleep. The tents borrowed light from the sun, so it had already become dark as time passed.

"I'll see you tomorrow, Adam." [Bryan]

"Alright. Good night." [Adam]

It was difficult to see in the dark, but Adam could make out Bryan's figure as he ascended the bunk bed.

("Ah… Finally.") [Adam]

Adam entered his bed and rested his eyes. All that he knew was that he was mentally tired from the day.

"Weren't you supposed to be thrown a blanket party?" [Krino]

("Now that I think of it, I wonder what happened to that?") [Adam]

Just as he thought that, Adam felt a fabric hit his face. It was like someone dropped a large cloth over him.

"What the-?!" [Adam]

Suddenly, he felt physical blows coming from all directions.

"Ow! The hell is going on?!" [Adam]

He tried getting up and taking off the cloth. However, it seemed that more fabrics were being thrown on.

"What are you doing?! Fight back!" [Krino]

("I'm trying!") [Adam]

He started to get pushed around, keeping him from maintaining balance. Then came what felt like punches and then a few kicks.

"I don't see you swinging! Ignore whatever's on you!" [Krino]

Adam swung wildly, but he only struck air.

"Ha! Look at him!" [???]

Laughter rang out, which was a grave mistake against Adam.

("Found you.") [Adam]

Pinpointing his opponents through sound, Adam swung hard.

"Agh!" [???]

He heard a loud crash as something hit the ground hard.

"Keep going! Show them no mercy!" [Astos]

Adam did as he was told. He continued to swing in the general direction of every sound made. Sometimes he felt like he was hitting random objects, but he really did not care.

"S-Someone stop him!" [???]

Adam continued to bash everything he heard, that is, until he heard a certain voice.

"What the hell are you fuck-nuggets doing?!" [???]

The recognizable voice of the senior officer caused Adam to freeze. The sound of a flick turned the inside of the tent bright, allowing Adam to realize that he was covered by a bunch of blankets.

("Huh. I didn't know the tent had lights installed.") [Adam]

He took off the layers of blankets, which made him witness the terrible state the tent was in. Many soldiers lay on the floor, groaning in pain. There was also the addition of multiple bunkbeds bent out of shape, which the senior officer didn't seem too happy about.

("...I think I figured out what a blanket party is now.") [Adam]
