Chapter 158 - So Close, Yet So Far

Bruce was dumbfounded.

("Level one? He's telling me his ability is level one…?") [Bruce]

"...You're lying." [Bruce]

Adam shrugged.

"I have nothing else to say." [Adam]

"What is your ability?" [Bruce]

"I'll tell you if you tell me first." [Adam]

Speaking to Bruce in a condescending way, Adam did his best to imitate Roy.

"...Are you trying to piss him off?" [Krino]

("Yeah.") [Adam]

"Why?" [Krino]

("He looks like the type to be easier to fight when they're angrier.") [Adam]

Bruce contemplated Adam's suggestion, but all he did was grit his teeth.

"Fine. It doesn't matter what your ability is when all I have to do is win." [Bruce]

Lunging forward, he thrust with his shield.

"Lance!" [Bruce]

The wall extended even further, thinning into a long pole with a tip as sharp as a knife.

"Woah!" [Adam]

Surprised by the sudden thrust, Adam stepped back whilst evading the lance's edge.

"Scythe!" [Bruce]

The lance's edge curved, turning into a hook meant to ensnare Adam's escape route.

"Uh-oh." [Adam]

Almost falling into the edge of Bruce's scythe, Adam placed his air rod behind him.

"Sike." [Adam]

The rod acted as a barrier between him and the scythe, keeping him safe.

"Hammer!" [Bruce]

The scythe's hooked edge retracted, collecting itself into a large rectangular mass.

"Try blocking this!" [Bruce]

Raising the hammer with great effort, he swung with all his might.

"Okay." [Adam]

Aiming to stop the hammer, Adam suddenly decided to step back to evade.

"Nevermind." [Adam]

The hammer struck the ground, causing the stone floor to shatter like glass.

("The hell?!") [Adam]

Surprised by how much damage the ground took, Adam almost didn't react fast enough to block the stone shrapnel coming at him.

"Why'd you dodge?!" [Bruce]

"Why wouldn't I?! Look at what it did to the floor!" [Adam]

"...Annoying." [Bruce]

"What?" [Adam]

Breathing heavily, Bruce attempted to catch his breath.

("He's too nimble! The hammer is understandable, but how is he dodging everything else?!") [Bruce]

("...Man, getting my ass beat by Aurora is working surprisingly well. Everything looks super slow compared to her punches. …And weaker.") [Adam]

Seeing as how Bruce wasn't making a move, Adam assumed it was his turn.

"Pressure Cannon!" [Adam]

"Wha-?! Shield!" [Bruce]

Turning the black metal into a shield, he felt immense pressure pushing him back.

"Seriously? How about this!" [Adam]

Charging forward, Adam slammed his fist against Bruce's shield.

"Ngh!" [Bruce]

"...Owww!" [Adam]

Pulling away from Bruce, Adam blew on his hand.

"Why did I think that was a good idea?!" [Adam]

His hand turned red from pain. All he could do now was hope that it wasn't bruised or broken.

"You dumbass. Punching my shield wont do anything for you." [Bruce]

Acting as if there was nothing wrong, he tried his best to hide the trembling of his arms.

("How hard can a guy hit?! I thought my arms were going to fall off!") [Bruce]

"Ugh… Orion? You have a cooling pack on you or something?" [Adam]

"What? Why would I have a cooling pack on me?" [Orion]

"Felix sometimes does." [Adam]

"...Seriously?! Felix, is this true?!" [Orion]

Looking at Felix, there was no reply. It appeared that he was too focused on dealing with Liam to pay Orion or Adam any attention.

"Hey. You. What's your name?" [Bruce]

"Huh? You're talking to me?" [Adam]

"Yeah, you. I know you're injured, so I'd like to offer you a deal." [Bruce]

Thinking that he was acting a bit strange, Adam raised a brow.

"...And that is?" [Adam]

"How about we call this a draw? I'll back off, and you back off." [Bruce]

"...Hm. Let me think about this…" [Adam]

Glancing at Orion and Felix, Adam pondered.

("Orion is still here, and I'm pretty sure Felix is going to win… Also, my hand hurts pretty bad. Like, really bad. Maybe I should stop here.") [Adam]

"I know an easy win. You could probably tear through his shield if you use enough mana." [Krino]

("Will it keep him alive?") [Adam]

"Probably not." [Krino]

("Then I guess we're calling it a draw.") [Adam]

Raising both his hands, Adam backed off.

"Deal." [Adam]

Bruce breathed a sigh of relief.

("Thank god he's a dimwit…") [Bruce]
