Chapter 40 - The Cost of Homework

Adam took out his egg and placed it on a nearby desk.

("Time to crack this baby wide open.") [Adam]

"Please don't do that again…" [Krino]

("What's wrong? You don't like the way I scramble my words?") [Adam]

"Oh god… It hurts me so much…" [Krino]

("Okay, I'll lay off the egg puns now.") [Adam]

"Ugh…" [Krino]

As Krino groaned in agony, Adam proceeded to transfer mana to the egg.

("What the… It's taking so much mana!") [Adam]

"Adam stop! You're going to run out of mana!" [Krino]

Adam struggled to stop the flow of mana, but his efforts were in vain.

("I-I can't! It won't let me!") [Adam]

"Try reversing the flow!" [Krino]

("I already tried that! If it comes down to it, I'll just give it everything I have!") [Adam]

He pushed forth, mana erupting from within. As the energy sunk into the egg, a symbol appeared on the egg.

("Huh? What's that?") [Adam]

The egg stopped drawing energy from him, allowing him to rest.

("Did… did I do it?") [Adam]

The symbol vanished, replaced with the rattling and cracking of the egg shell.

("What's it going to be?") [Adam]

The shell opened, revealing a creature similar to a dog. It looked around, eventually locking eyes with Adam.

"Hey little guy~." [Adam]

"Why are you speaking like that? It grosses me out." [Krino]

("This is how you talk to animals.") [Adam]

"...I'm pretty sure that's not how it works." [Krino]

Adam pet the dog, causing it to purr.

("It's like a mix between a cat and a dog…") [Adam]

"Are you going to go show Sebastian?" [Krino]

("Is there a reason not to?") [Adam]

"You have me there." [Krino]

Adam carefully picked up the puppy, letting out a yelp as it was carried.

"Oink!" [Puppy]

Adam was baffled, unsure of what he just heard.

"...Oink? Krino, I'm not dreaming am I?" [Adam]

"It seems your new family is a mix between a dog, cat, and... a pig." [Krino]

Adam stared down at it in his hand, still unsure about the puppy.

("Well… you can choose your friends, but not your family.") [Adam]

He went downstairs, cradling the puppy.

"Hey Sebastian, I did it!" [Adam]

As he was talking, Sebastian took a sip of his drink.

"Hm?" [Sebastian]

He turned around, and ended up choking on some water.

"Mrrmph! ...Kuh! Haa… You actually did it!" [Sebastian]

He went through a whole process of choking to swallowing, and finally ended it with praise.

"I'm surprised, I didn't think you would hatch it this quickly." [Sebastian]

He inspected the puppy, although there really wasn't much to inspect since it just looked like a regular dog.

"Looks fine to me, just give it about a week and it'll be about as big as a fully grown dog." [Sebastian]

"...How big will it be when it fully grows?" [Adam]

"Hm… Let me tell you a little something. Are you listening?" [Sebastian]

Adam nodded, interested in what he had to say.

"You know about those fantasy story books right?" [Sebastian]

"Yeah…?" [Adam]

"The creatures in there are real. They mostly come from those eggs I gave you." [Sebastian]

("This dog can become something like a goblin?") [Adam]

"What do I do if it turns into a slime or something?!" [Adam]

Sebastian stood there stunned for a moment.

"I think we have a misunderstanding here. The eggs I gave you are the animal type. Not the humanoid or inorganic type. There is no possibility of it turning into a slime or those weird creatures you're thinking of." [Sebastian]

("That's a relief… wait.") [Adam]

"If I get myself a humanoid egg, do I have a chance of pulling a really hot girl?" [Adam]

"...Are you trying to imitate Roy right now?" [Sebastian]

Adam suddenly froze.

"...Nevermind." [Adam]

Sebastian chuckled, he found the similarities hilarious.

"If you really want to know, you can get a hot girl from them. I don't really recommend it though." [Sebastian]

"Is there a reason not to?" [Adam]

"They have high intelligence, it's more likely for them to leave you instead." [Sebastian]

"Oh… If it's from the fantasy stories, can my dog turn into a dragon?" [Adam]

"I've seen it before, it's possible. Most of the creatures written in medieval stories are usually creatures that actually existed." [Sebastian]

Adam stroked his dog's head, while whispering words to it.

"Grow… Grow into a strong dragon." [Adam]

"Just telling you now, you're being really creepy." [Krino]

("Leave me alone. Having a giant monster as a companion is a man's romance.") [Adam]

His thoughts were interrupted by Sebastian shortly after.

"You should probably go rest, hatching the egg must have taken a lot of mana." [Sebastian]

("Now that he mentions it, I do feel tired.") [Adam]

He brought back the dog into his room, laying in bed with it.

"Before you sleep, isn't there something else you need to do?" [Krino]

("And what would that be?") [Adam]

"A name! You forgot to give the dog a name!" [Krino]

("A name…? Should I give it a name like doggo?") [Adam]

"...Is that really the best you have?" [Krino]

("Fine… A name based on its looks doesn't seem like a good idea. With all of its changes it will have…") [Adam]

He pondered for what seemed like hours, but couldn't think of anything good. With his eyes closed, his thinking drifted off into sleeping.

The next morning came, and Adam sat up in bed groggily. He moved his hand where the dog was supposed to be, but there was nothing there.

"Huh?!" [Adam]

He got up in a panic, searching his room like a madman.

("Where! Where is it!") [Adam]

He heard its familiar oinks outside his room, making him swing the door open and rushing downstairs. When he set foot in the kitchen, he couldn't believe his eyes.

"What…?" [Adam]

His dog was sitting on top of Vivian's head as she cooked.

"Uh… Sis? What are you doing?" [Adam]

Vivian took notice of Adam and smiled.

"I'm cooking breakfast! I'm more surprised that you got up by yourself today." [Vivian]

"That's not the point, why do you have my dog on your head?" [Adam]

She looked up, and patted the dogs head.

"You mean Kilo?" [Vivian]

The dog oinked in response.

"Did you name my dog, Kilo...?" [Adam]

"Is there a problem with it?" [Vivian]

("I have a feeling I shouldn't try to argue with her here…") [Adam]

"N-not really, but why did you name it that?" [Adam]

"Because it's cute!" [Vivian]

"..." [Adam]

("I have no words…") [Adam]

After he had finished breakfast, he went straight to school. At the beginning of class, Mr. Frank stood in front and began calling students names.

"Orion!" [Mr. Frank]

"Y-yes!" [Orion]

"Give me your homework!" [Mr. Frank]

Orion pulled out a sheet of paper and placed it in Mr. Frank's hand. After inspecting it for a moment, he nodded, allowing Orion to return to his seat.

"Next, Jessica!" [Mr. Frank]

The pattern continued until it reached Adam.

("Oh crap! I forgot to do the homework last night!") [Adam]

"Adam!" [Mr. Frank]

"Yes!" [Adam]

"Give me your homework." [Mr. Frank]

He held out his hand, beckoning for the assignment. Beads of sweat dripped down Adam's face.

"Uh… I forgot to do it…" [Adam]

"..." [Mr. Frank]

He lowered his hand, glaring at Adam.

"That's fine." [Mr. Frank]

"Huh?" [Adam]

"You may sit back down." [Mr. Frank]

("He's a lot less pissed than I thought he would be..") [Adam]

As he began to take his seat, Mr. Frank stopped him.

"But! You must go through a suitable punishment first." [Mr. Frank]

"...What?" [Adam]

"Your punishment is… DEATH!!!" [Mr. Frank]

"WHAT?!" [Adam]
