"Huh?"
"We're superheroes," he repeated.
Akira let out an exasperated sigh, not-so-gently pushing him aside. Evan dramatically cried in pain, but Akira was looking at me, "don't listen to this moron. We're not 'superheroes', it's a lot different from that."
"Then what would you call us?" he countered, looking slightly offended that she didn't consider him a superhero. He was like a little kid, I swear.
She paused for a moment, taking her time to think before she spoke, "I'd say, it's more like... we're righteous teens with otherworldly powers?"
"And I was the one over-exaggerating," Evan scoffed. Akira conveniently slipped and accidentally shoved him again.
I looked between the two, on one hand questioning their sanity. Did they actually think I'd believe this shit? How stupid do they have to think I am to accept this baseless claim about having inhuman powers.
On the other hand, I knew they must've judged well 'cause I almost bought right into it. I turned to Evan, "So what powers do you have, exactly, Mr. Superhero?"
"Heh, she's mocking you," Oliver commented.
Evan diligently ignored him, "I can ma-"
"Are y'all seriously doing this?" Lucy cut him off, an incredulous look on her face. From what i could obviously tell, Lucy was the only one against this whole thing. Them letting me in on their massive secret. To be honest, I could see where she was coming from. If only it was anyone other than me, this would've turned out very differently for them.
Evan only shrugged before continuing, "I have the ability to manipulate people."
I heard Lucy grumble something under her breath, but what Evan said was far more interesting. "Oh, you can?" Is that what he did with the man last time?" "So you're like a vampire, then."
He looked horrified, his mouth turned up in disgust. Oliver, Akira and Jaden all let out a few subtle laughs. I mean, if I caught them, they weren't all that subtle, were they? "How could you lump me in with those crazies? What, next thing I know, I'll be sparkling."
"I thought it seemed fitting," I teased, not bothering to mention that most vampires in fiction are like super fucking hot.
He made a face at me, "I'm not a vampire."
"Right, I wanna see it though. Manipulate me or something."
He gave me a weird look, "why would you throw yourself under the bus willingly?"
"If it has to be someone, might as well be me," I shrugged, but it didn't help my case to be fair.
"If I could manipulate you, I would've. For some reason, it doesn't work on you."
"Does that mean I'm special or something?"
"You don't look special."
"Wow. Well, fuck you too."
Jaden suddenly popped into the conversation, most likely trying to keep me from biting Evan's head off this early into our conversation. "I didn't think you'd believe us this easy. It's somewhat surprising."
"I don't know if I do..." I said honestly, actually taking the time to think about it now. This all felt a bit too real for it to be fake, what with all the tension when I entered the room and their slight hostility in the beginning. "Nothing else I can come up with makes a lot of sense, so I might as well, I guess."
Oliver eyed me with concern, "aren't you a bit too chill?"
I laughed, "yeah, I get that a lot. It sure would be nice if I could witness something though..." I trailed off suggestively, giving them my best puppy dog eyes.
"As long as this stays between us, and you don't mention it to a single other person. Ever," Akira warned me first, her tone taking a seriousness it didn't have before.
Even before she said it, I wasn't going to blab about things that weren't any of my concern. Yeah, that situation was absolutely insane if they were being real and I never thought anything like this existed out there, but it's still none of my business at the end of the day. "You don't have to worry about that. I won't."
Nolan stirred in his sleep again, and everyone in the room seemed to be holding their breath as he once again, lifted his head. I watched in confusion as he blinked slowly, and in a groggy voice, told them, "she's clear."
Akira turned to me with a huge smile, "I knew it!"
Everyone else seemed to be sighing in relief, and I took that as my cue to speak to the guy. "What does that mean?"
Nolan looked at me, surprised that I was addressing him, "Uhm...I read your mind to see if you might be thinking of plotting against us. Sorry 'bout that."
My mouth hung open, "Isn't that illegal or something? I'm pretty sure that's against my right to privacy."
"You going to tell the court you wanna sue me for reading your mind?" Nolan countered, an annoyingly condescending look in his green eyes. Don't all these kids think too fucking highly of themselves? Go ahead, read that too, bitch. I'm going to curse you in my mind all the time now. Just you watch. Asshole.
I didn't realize I'd been glaring daggers until he spoke again, "I can only read minds when I'm asleep, but looking at you I could probably guess." He was smirking. SMIRKING.
Oh, my god. Fucking prick.
"I still haven't seen anything substantial, so maybe we're jumping the gun here, don't you think?" I leaned my head on my knuckles, glaring at Nolan sideways.
They all went quiet for a bit, and then as if making a cumulative decision, everyone in the room turned to look at Lucy.
"Seriously?" She grumbled, her frown still ever-present. No one budged with the staring, so she sighed, giving me a dirty look before she said, "fine. Only this once."
God, she acts like she's doing me a favour. I mean, I guess she kind of is, but still.
Lucy took a deep breath in, her eyes focusing on something across the room. I tried to follow, but couldn't pin-point what exactly she was looking at. However, everyone had followed her gaze and were waiting in anticipation. Anticipation of what, however, I did not know.
So I decided to ask.
"Uhm...what are we waiting for?"
"Shh..." Jade shushed me, not taking her eyes off the spot. Well, then, I guess I could only wait.
And I waited, hearing the wall clock tick by the seconds.
1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
And suddenly, I could see it.
