Chapter 7 - Plants and Abilities

I watched, my mouth hung open, as one of the flowerpots lying by the windowsill slowly lifted up into the air, just hovering there.

Holy shit.

"Luce..." Evan softly warned, sounding pretty alarmed. "Be careful with that, yeah?"

"I'm trying," she wheezed out, and I could see her concentration wavering. I guess you'd have to focus a lot to get something as heavy to move. She only managed to keep it up for another 3 seconds before she managed to gently placed the pot down on the floor.

"That was awesome!" I couldn't contain the excitement bubbling inside of me. Hums of agreement went around, and I didn't really expect to be smiling this wide at Lucy, if I'm being honest.

But what I expected even less was the deep red blush coating her cheeks as she said, "I was actually aiming for the box." She pointed at the small cardboard box sitting under the window, and for a moment everyone went quiet.

"Oh."

"Yeah..." she hid behind her hair.

"I mean, it was still just as awesome!" I tried cheering her up. To me, moving anything at all without touching it is a huge fucking deal.

Lucy peered at me through her lashes, "really?"

What was this sudden change in character?

"Of course," I gave her a genuine smile.

She looked happy for only a second before her expression turned sour again, "I don't trust you."

Ah, there it is. She's back.

Akira stifled her laugh at the interaction, coming in for a save again, "It's fine, Luce. At least you didn't break it this time."

She shrugged, still embarassed that she moved the wrong thing. Was it lack of practice, maybe?

"So do you all have different powers?" I asked, looking around at the rest.

"Uh, sort of. I'm sort of like Nolan, except I can read a person's personality," Akira said, not elaborating any further. I thought best not to ask her either. "Oliver is kind of our healer. Then there's Jade... well in simplest terms, she has super-strength."

I eyed the tiny girl, with her big doe eyes and innocent smile. Super-strength?!

Looks sure can be deceiving, damn.

I decided not to pry any further about their secrets, instead continuing to talk to them about school. I found out that Akira and Nolan were in the same year as me and Evan. Oliver and Lucy were a year below us, and as expected, Jade was the youngest, being in her freshman year of school. So we're all from the same school after all.

I thought it was odd that I'd never seen them hang around in school, but I guess it made sense if they were trying to keep their identities a secret. God, I felt like I was in some sci-fi movie now, this shit was too cool.

We talked for a really long time after that, and I surprisingly got along with most of them, even Nolan. He just liked being a dick sometimes, I learnt. Before I could notice, it was already really late in the night. Almost 10 pm. Everyone decided it was time to head back home, and Evan saw us out to the porch.

"I'll be leaving with Oliver and Lucy," Akira told me as we walked down the stairs. "Where do you stay? Maybe we can drop you home."

I told her my address and she just happened to stay on the other side of town. "Nolan and Lucy stay away from you as well," she laughed, but her tone was apologetic.

"It's fine, I'm used to walking home alone." I almost added that nothing ever happens anyway, before I realised that they're probably the reason crime barely ever happens in this town. The reminder that streets at night might not be as safe as I'd thought is slightly terrifying, I won't lie.

Evan, who was walking ahead seemed to have heard us talk. He looked back, "I'll walk you home, it's too dangerous to go alone. Who knows which knife weilding bastard you'll run into this time."

I opted out of reminding him that I was only coming to his rescue last night, perhaps because I really didn't want to walk home alone.

"Oh look, it's nice guy Evan to the rescue again," Akira nudged him teasingly and he grumbled.

I was slowly starting to see it too, that Evan was a lot nicer than I'd originally thought. He was like the male version of Akira in the group, and yet, he seemed so different on his own.

How curious.
