Three weeks later
Time flew quickly as Andre and I looked for ways to finally tell someone on the outside what was going on. Uncle Sam came to visit me like always, yet I could not tell him what was going on as General had his men keeping a close eye on me. I believe he might have suspected something because his men would not leave me alone for a minute.
One night, Andre sneaked into my cell. He woke me up from my sleep and sat beside me on the bed.
" I'm sorry I woke you up at this hour but I have something to tell you", he announced
" Tell me. What is it?" I sat up, with my back leaning against the wall
" I heard, General will be going for a workshop tommorow, early in the morning", he whispered
" Really? I never knew that. How come this was not announced like the last time?" I asked, a bit curious.
" Well I don't know. But this is the opportunity we have been waiting for. You are going to call your lawyer to come here tomorrow", he said
" But, what do I tell him? I don't know if I can really do this, Andre. I am scared. What if General decides not to attend the workshop?" I asked, feeling very uncertain.
" Listen, General will be gone for three days. And yes, I am sure he will be attending. I got this info from someone close to him. David, we have to do this tomorrow. Don't you want to end this? Don't you want Sebastian to get the justice he deserves?" Andre whispers again.
I thought about it. I really wanted justice for Sebastian. Ever since he was murdered, I have been living with guilt. The guilt that he died because of me. I did not want anyone else to die because they were trying to help me.
" David, hey...are you okay?" He snapped his fingers in front of me.
" Yes...yes I am fine. I was just thinking. What if things don't go as planned? General's men are all over watching me closely. How will I be able to talk to my lawyer when he gets here?" I asked, feeling worried.
" Leave that to me. Just call him tomorrow to come see you, okay?" Andre said
I nodded. He left and closed the bars behind him. I was left alone with my thoughts.
I called Uncle Sam the next day and asked him to come see me. Andre arranged for me to see him at a secret part of the prison yard. That place was out of bounds for prisoners and anyone seen loitering there would be dealt with.
All the prisoners complied and never ventured to that part of the yard so Andre was sure no one would even think of looking for me there. But, I still wanted to be careful. I did not want to be in any kind of trouble in the absence of the general. It still meant stiff punishment for me if I were to get caught.
I waited till I saw Andre walking in with Godfather. I was very scared that someone might discover us, so I was so relieved when the two of them finally showed up.
" Okay, so you both can sit over there and talk. But, make it snappy. We need to be very discreet and I would not want anyone ruining our plans. So all the best, Dave", he said, pointing to the bench ahead of us.
" Thank you so much, Andre. I will never forget what you are doing for me", I said and hugged him.
He hugged me back and left us alone. He was to keep watch and alert us in case anyone tried to come that way.
" David, what is going on? Why this secret meeting? Why couldn't we meet at the visitors lounge?" Uncle threw questions at me once we were seated
" There is something important i need to tell you, uncle, which I could not tell you in public..." I began
" What's going on, David? Tell me", he said
I looked at him and sighed deeply. It was hard to tell him what was happening to me here. But, now that he is here, there is no going back.
I narrated everything that was happening to him without leaving a tiny detail out. He listened to me till I was finished.
" So, these has been happening all these while and you did not tell me about it? David, why have you kept such an information from me for so long?" Uncle inquired
" I was afraid, uncle. He would try to kill you like he did to Seb and I did not want that. He has eyes all around, watching me. What was I to do, uncle?" I replied.
" I understand. But the thing is, we will need more evidence to back what you told me in order for us to put this man away for good. As it stands, it will be your word against his, and no one will believe you, considering your situation", he suggested.
" So what are we going to do now?" I asked
" Well, as I said, we will need more evidence against him. I will have to see if I can dig anything on him. If we are to strike, we must strike hard", he said
" Okay. But I am scared uncle. What if he finds out you are looking for evidence against him? He might try to hurt you, uncle", I said, worriedly.
" I know. But I will be careful and I will ask you to be careful too. Look, just give me sometime and I promise I will get you out of this,ok?" He assured me.
I nodded. " I will try. Whatever you have to do, please do it quickly. I really want all of this to stop. I can't take it anymore. I don't think I will be able to endure more of the torture".
" Please just hold on for me, alright. I will do what I can to get you out of this. I will not abandon you, do you understand? So just hold on a little longer for me. And, thank you for finally telling me", he hugged me.
I was so relieved I had told my Godfather about what the general had been doing to me. At the same time, I could not help but worry. I worried that things may go wrong. What if the general found out? What will happen to Andre, my Godfather and me?
