Chereads / I am controlled by a D20?! / Chapter 7 - The Trial (1)

Chapter 7 - The Trial (1)

The torchlight got closer and closer towards their cell and finally, Captain Daniel rounds the corner with six guards following behind him. Captain Daniel motions to one of the guards and he produces a set of keys that he uses to open up the cell door. Once open two other guards enter the room with manicals in their grasp and they move towards the two of them in the cell.

Mike presents his wrists and the goblin seeing Mike follows his lead and puts for his wrists as well. Once their wrists are shackled they are both led out of the cell and brought down the hall. As they walk down the hall the other inmates in the cells were cursing the guards and some were just starting at Mike and the goblin as they moved along with the escort.

A few minutes of walking and they reach the end of the hall and walk up a spiral flight of stairs. As they walk up the stone stairs Mike cannot help but be worried about what was going to happen to them. He had no idea what the judiciary system was like here or if there was one, to begin with, but thinking it over Mike came up with the conclusion that society cannot be built up without rules so there must be some trial thing for him and the goblin.

While Mike is thinking all this the guards continue to go up and up while not saying a word as they all pass other doors along the stairwell. This goes on for a few minutes until they stop in front of a door which is at the end of the staircase. Captian Daniel produces a key and opens the door before everyone enters the room.

The room was incredibly large as it was big enough to hold an entire modern-day courtroom where a judge was in the middle of a case. The one on trial currently was a half-orc in chains and the judge was a tanned human female who was wearing a black silk gown without a wig. The case seemed to be almost over as the jury convened for a second before giving a guard a piece of paper and nodding towards the judge.

"Mr. Thomson the jury has decided on a verdict," The judge says as a piece of parchment is handed to her. She looks at the parchment for a moment before looking back at the half-orc.

"The jury finds the defendant guilty on the charges of destroying public property and endangering the people. I judge Rosemary sentence you to 4 years of public service and a fine of 20 platinum pieces" 'clack' The gavel falls and the half-orc visibly pales and looks dumbfounded at this verdict. The guards take him off the stand and out of the court as Mike and the goblin are brought forward towards the stand. The judge is given a small stack of parchments and she quickly looks them over as the two of them go up to the stand. While the judge is looking at the parchments Mike looks at the jury to see who will decide if they are guilty or innocent. The majority of the jury were human with the only other race being dwarf and elf.

'So I guess a jury of your peers is not something in this world' Mike thinks to himself as thinks back to his old world.

Looking at this Mike could not help but realize that he had not leveled up yet even though he got a lot of exp from the last quest he did.

"System why did I not level up yet" Mike mumbles

"The user was busy and did not use the experience that was given so a new function was added called unused experience which can be used to level up skills, classes, and overall level"

"System use all my unused exp to level up" Mike mumbles once more

Looking at his stats Mike can't help but feel happy that some of his stats leveled up on their own. Looking Mike realizes that he has a lot of things that the system has given him but does not know what they are or what they do. However, looking at how the judge was almost done reading the small stack of parchments that were given to her Mike could not ask any questions but he knew one thing that he wanted to try.

"System use an unused point on the magic stat"

"The user will have to use more points in order to unlock the magic stat is this acceptable?"

Mike was a little startled to see that leveling up the magic stat would not work unless more points were used to do so but the temptation of using skill steal was too good to pass up because progress is progress no matter how small it may seem.

"Yes"

The user has used 4 unused points on the magic stat and can now learn [level 0] spells from magic-users

...

Mike was not disappointed by reading the notification as he was happy that he could now learn magic! Mike wanted to shout with joy at this but reality would not allow that as he was in a courtroom about to be put on trial. The judge puts down the last piece of parchment onto the stack before looking over at the two of them in the defendant's stand.

"You both are to state your name and occupation in the city of Irondale and this trial shall be recorded for the public"

"I understand your honor and my name is Micheal Bridlington I just arrived in the city so I currently have no occupation in the city"

The judge nods at this before she looks towards the goblin.

"And you?"

"M-my name is Roblin, your honor, I have lived in the city for 3 years now and I work for Mr. Rufus at the bakery kneading the dough and such"

"Roblin the goblin? Well, that is a strange name but I have heard weirder" The judge says to her self as she moves the stack forward.

"Now then Mr. Roblin you are charged with being the mastermind of attempting to blow up the 'Knight's Tankard' inn yesterday night how do you plead?"

"I plead not guilty"

"Mr. Bridlington you are charged with being the accomplice of Mr. Roblin to set off the bomb how do you plead"

"I plead not guilty"

"Very well now than who shall speak for the both of you?"

Mike steps forward "I will"

The judge nods her head and looks towards one of the guards who then walks towards Mike and takes off his manicals. Next, a man wearing a tux walks into the room and sits down in the accuser's section of the court.

The man had a sharp gaze and an intimidating and entitled aura as if he could lock someone up just for being next to him. Other than that he had brown hair and eyes which were currently looking at Mike. He smirks and then proceeds to stand up and walk in front of the jury.

"Gentlemen of the jury we have before us the accused which have committed a hideous crime that almost cost the lives of all those in the 'Knight's Tankard' that fateful night. Now those two responsible for the act are-"

"Objection your honor. I was the one who prevented the bomb from destroying the inn and from killing everyone in it including me. Also, I believe the jury should know that when I found the bomb next to Roblin he was unconscious and the bomb had already started to count do so there would be no need for Roblin to stay with the bomb unless it was a set up"

The judge looks at Mike who called the objection to what the man was saying. The man looks at Mike infuriated at being interrupted during his speech. Mike does not care as currently, the more pressing matter was getting more exp and being found innocent from the allegations.

"Mr. Bridlington do you have any evidence to back up your claims of Mr. Roblin being set up to take the blame for the bomb?" The judge asks

"I only have witnesses to back up my claims no physical evidence is on me"

"Than until the witnesses are brought forward to the stand your claim is not valid so do not interrupt me!" The accuser yells as he walks towards Mike

"MR. ROBBINSON I WILL NOT HAVE THIS KIND OF BEHAVIOR IN MY COURT IS THAT UNDERSTOOD!"

Hearing the judge yell Mr. Robbinson shy's away and glares at Mike as he sits back down in the accuser's section once more. The judge rubs her eyes before looking back up.

"The court shall take a small break as the witnesses of the incident are brought forward to give testimony. Until then the court is adjourned"
