Mrs Wilson, Denise's mother, stood outside looking around. She had called the mechanic about an hour ago and had expected him to be at the mansion moments ago. She waited for him for some minutes, then saw him coming at the entrance. When he got closer to her, he greeted her.
"What took you so long, Mike? Do you know how long I have been waiting for you?" Mrs Wilson asked. She was a bit angry that she had to wait for him for that long.
"I am sorry ma'am. I had to repair someone's car before coming here. I am very sorry," the mechanic replied.
"It's okay. So, can I show you the car? It's been a while since I got it maintained and knowing my daughter, I am sure she has not even remembered to maintain this car. Anyway, come, I will show the car to you."
They walked towards Denise's car. Mrs Wilson opened the drivers door and sat in and opened the bonnet. The repairer held it in place and began to check for any abnormalities. Mrs Wilson was about to get out of the car, when her eyes picked up on two metallic objects. She drew closer to it and realised that they were guns. She gasped in shock.
"Oh God! How did these get here? Who does these belong to?" She quickly picked the guns and hid it behind her. She did not want Mike to see it.
"Mike, I am going upstairs for a while. I will be back soon."
"Yes, ma'am." Michael continued checking on the car and Mrs Wilson rushed upstairs.
"Denise will have to explain to me what guns are doing in her car," she said to herself.
She suddenly barged in when she got to Denise's room and started raising her voice at her daughter. "Young lady, care to explain to me what these are doing in your car?" She threw the guns on the bed, making Elena jump out of the bed.
"God! Those are guns. Denise, who do they belong to?" Elena asked her. Both of them stared at Denise like she had committed a crime.
"I swear these guns do not belong to me. Believe me," Denise quickly said.
"Whose is it, then? Young lady, you better tell me who these guns belong to before I force it out of you." Her mother was now furious.
Denise did not know what to say. She had been trying to hide the attempted kidnap from her mother and then the guns suddenly turned up. She can't believe she forgot to tell Harold to dispose them off. She realised she could no longer hide the truth from her mother. She had to tell her.
"The guns don't belong to me. They belong to some men who tried to attack Harry and I last night. Harry managed to disarm them and took the guns from them. I guess he forgot to dispose them off."
Her mother sat at the other foot of the bed, worry written all over her face. "You mean, you and Harold were attacked last night? And you did not even bother to tell me?"
"Mom, I am sorry. I did not want you to worry about me, that is why I kept it away from you."
"I am sure this is the work of my political opponents. They are looking for ways for me to let go of the candidacy, but they are lying. I won't allow them to win over me. No, it won't happen!" Mrs Wilson got up from the bed suddenly. She was back to getting angry again.
"Mother calm down. Nothing happened to me. Harry saved me and brought me home, safe and sound."
Mrs Wilson turns to her daughter. "Have you thought of what might have happened if Harold was not there with you? Do you know what could have happened? Like by now your body would have been found in a ravine."
Denise shuddered at the thought. "Mother, please don't say things like that. You are scaring me. Mom, I am fine now, there is no reason to get worked up over this."
"You know what? I am getting you a bodyguard and this is not up for discussion," her mother stated.
"No, mom. Don't you understand me? I don't want a well built man following me around and harassing all the good people who would want to approach me. It will ruin my social life. That is the very reason why I decided to keep it away from you. Please, mother, don't force me to walk around with a bodyguard always following me around. I only want Harry, that's it!"
"You will listen to me on this one, Denise. I am only trying to protect you from all this mess. Understand me too, baby girl," her mother's voice was lower now.
Elena cleared her throat. The two ladies had totally forgotten about her presence in the room. They both turned to her. "I guess I should leave you two alone to talk. This is a family thing and I don't think I am needed here."
"No my dear, stay. I need you to talk some sense into your friend's head."
"I don't need a bodyguard, mother. I am fine with Harry by my side. Why can't you understand that?" It was Denise's turn to raise her voice now.
"I can see that you are way attached to Harold. So, from now on, he will no longer drive you. He will be working for me."
"No, mom. You can't do this. I need him. He is my friend. You can't just take him away from me." Denise now looked really angry. How could her mother suddenly suggest such a thing?
"Please, ladies. let's calm our heads, please. This is getting out of hand. Please, both of you should calm down and have a seat." Elena said, trying to calm mother and daughter.
The room was silent after all the ladies sat down on the bed. Denise felt bad for raising her voice at her mother. This kind of argument happened when her mother had suggested to get a driver for her but it was not this intense. Could her mother be right? Was she really attached to Harold like her mother was saying?
"Baby girl, I am sorry for raising my voice at you. It's just that, I am so worried about you and your safety. I knew getting into politics might lead to something like this. But I did not think they will strike this early. I just need you to be safe, baby girl."
"I know, mom. I am sorry too. But, please mom, don't take Harry away from me, I beg you. I will accept for you to get me a bodyguard but please let Harry continue to work for me, please mom." she clasped her hands together.
Mrs Wilson had a slight smile on her face, then she nodded. Elena heaved a sigh of relief, making both women to suddenly laugh.
