Chapter 4 - Chapter Two

Ares

I've found the river and have followed it for several hours. Its nearing late afternoon/evening. I should start looking for a good resting place, but part of me wants to fly another hour. I pull my mind from my own foggy thoughts and take a survey of my body, my wings are starting to feel heavy, they havent had this much of a stretch in over a year. My legs feel like jelly and My face is numb. I am sure I am covered in bugs at this point. I decide I can go another hour flying and push my limits a little. As the next hour flies by (literally) I begin looking for a good place to camp for the night. I see the trees on the river side begin to thin out a bit. As they do more and more land starts opening up. I am looking for somewhere with some space but not super dense woods. I am confident I can protect myself from the wildlife, but I'd rather lessen the chance of an attack. As I am giving up hope, I spot the perfect area. I fly down and land soflty on my feet. I quickly begin setting up camp. Under a huge tree with lots of good branches. PLently of pretection aaginst rain, and a high place to sleep. I make my fire pit, set up my sleeping bag on one of the thicker branches towards the base of the tree, and begin digging for food.

By the time camp is set up and I have food cooking it is already getting dark. I'll need to spend the morning repacking and cleaning up before setting off. I think about a nice bath as well. With the river close by I can hear the gurgling waters. Its nice and peaceful. I sit back and enjoy my quiet dinner.

Dinner with the family is always fun. After dinner we all work to clear the table and clean up before we get into pajamas. With pajamas on we all meet back at the table to play a game. We take turns picking games. Tonight is Dads turn. We all know what were playing, Kings Rule. Its a game we've played since we were little. We all pick little charaters and place them on the board. There are 2 kingdoms on the board. The board itself looks like a map of our world. Two huge mountains, and lands on either side. Kings on either sides. A small governing trade route where our town would be, and a few nobles in the mountains. Dad plays trade route today. Yun and Reed play as the Eastern Kings, Mom is an east mountain noble, Mallax is the west mountain noble and I am the Western King. The way to win is to either completely overtake the other King, or to find a way to bring both kingdoms to peace. Bringing peace is hard since you have to appease both your kingdom and the other. Rarely do both sides agree. We've only had 2 really close attempts at peaceful winnings. The rest are won by sheer force. I am ready this time. I studied hard learning about the kingdoms. The East is more advanced in technology, but the West is better suited to fight. The children from the West grow up learning basic fighting skills along with a number of other things, while the East grow up with a more gentle upbringing.

This game can last hours, but tonight I plan to win within one. Both kingdoms have advanced past plain heiarchy pyramids of the past, but niether have lost thier monarchs. Royalty is still alive. My plan is simple as I set it up. A meeting with the east king, a peace talk, and disscussion of bith sides wants. Then a card is flipped. Marraige. An arranged marriage. Between the monarchs Eldest Prince and Princess. A union to tie the kingdoms, and a way to have access to both wants. My parents are shocked as I make my suggestion. My brothers both seem excited, they talk it over a great deal and agree. I have won the game. Its the best game play we've had in awhile. I will pick the next game. As We cleanup the table and start heading for bed, I can hear my dad's voice in his office. He's talking to someone about something quietly. I decide its not worth my time and head off to bed. I can ask about it tomorrow. As I go to sleep I can't help but feel a knot grow in my stomach. Maybe I ate too much steak? I think to myself as I fall asleep.
