"I'll call Han to pick us up." I said, taking out the phone from my pocket and dialling.
"Hey, no! Kid?!" We heard somebody yell as a little figure began running towards us. Little hands wrapped around Kai's leg as the little boy we saved begged her to pick him up.
"Hey, it's okay. You're okay." She whispered, lifting him into her arms and carrying him back to the ambulance.
"Han, pick us up. Now." I said, quickly hanging up and walking to the ambulance where Kai was laying the boy down on a bed. I could see how upset she was to leave him as she turned around to look at me.
"They'll look after him." I assured her as she began walking away from the ambulance. We walked over to the side of the road, waiting for Han. We both sat down on the grass as drop by drop it began to rain. "Are you okay?" I asked looking over at her as she was staring at one spot without blinking.
"Everything I ever owned is burned." She said bowing her head. I felt guilty having gone back and had my laptop and phone lying beside me.
"I know." I said, softly taking her hand in mine, but she quickly moved it. "What is it?" I asked as she looked down to her palm.
"I forgot. I touched my door handle and burned my hand."
"Let me see." She extended her hand to me, frowning as I brushed my thumb against it. "Come on, they have to wrap that up." I said getting up and holding my hand out for her. She slowly got up off the floor and we walked over to the nearest ambulance. They all seemed busy with the burned survivors, but we had some time to waste before Han arrived. After a half hour, they wrapped it up and we returned to the road just in time. Han's car pulled up and he quickly got out to make sure we were okay.
"Sir!" He looked in awe, watching as the building began collapsing.
"Take us home Han." I said, opening the door for Kai. She sat down in the back seat, leaning her head against the window. I shut the door and as I opened my door, I could see a tear run down her cheek. I closed the door and got in the back with her. I pulled her closer and let her lean on me as she cried. "Let's go." I said quietly as Han looked back at us. After 10 minutes her sniffling stopped and she leaned against me, quietly breathing. I pulled out my phone and texted Han, so Kai wouldn't hear me. I told him to investigate the fire. It was perfectly possible for it to have been an accident, but I wanted to be sure that it had nothing to do with the taxi driver we killed. When you have money, you can get away with anything. We pulled up to my penthouse and I slowly moved, cupping Kai's face with my hand.
"Hey, we're here." I whispered as she slowly woke herself up. She jilted up and slowly opened her car door. She looked completely out of it and I quickly got out the other side and walked over to her. As soon as her feet touched the ground, she began falling to the floor. I quickly caught her and lifted her into my arms, carrying her upstairs.
The next morning, I awoke to the security calling me from the reception, telling me some girl was outside eager to get in. Fei. The fire was on every news station and everybody knew about it. She practically fell through my elevator door as it opened.
"Mr. Wang. Are you alright? Where's Kai? Is she okay?" She had several bags with her full of clothes and looked rather dishevelled. That's a good friend.
"She's sleeping. She inhaled a lot of smoke and burned her hands, but she's okay." I explained, showing her to Kai's room. "Would you like some tea or coffee?" I asked, trying to be friendly. She shook her head and quickly headed for Kai's room. She knocked lightly and quickly rushed in.
"Oh my god, you poor thing." I heard her say, before she shut the door. I sat down in the kitchen, with the kettle on. Poor Kai. I had already thought of a plan to keep her here. I had plenty of space for the both of us. I made some tea and took it upon myself to take it to Kai. Really, I just wanted to know what they were talking about. I knocked lightly and let myself in, carrying the cup of tea and setting it down on the bedside table. "Mr. Wang, thank you so much for saving Kai. I don't know how I'd live without her." Fei's long arms wrapped around my waist as she hugged me tight. I smiled as she let me go and I looked over to Kai.
"How are you feeling?" I asked, coming to stand closer. Her sad face slightly lifted as she tried to make out a smile.
"I'm okay." She bowed her head upset.
"I brought you a bunch of clothes and shoes and you can stay with me until you get back on your feet. I will sort out your bank card and drivers' licence, don't even worry about it." Fei sat down beside her, caressing Kai's hair as she spoke. Like I said, she's a good friend. No matter what Fei said, it didn't seem to improve Kai's mood in anyway. "Can I use your bathroom? I drove like 2 hours to get here." Fei smiled, walking past me and out of the room.
"Just on the left." I said loudly as she wondered off. I waited another minute, before sitting down on the edge of Kai's bed.
"Thank you." She said looking over to the tea.
"I was kind of thinking that maybe you can stay here. I have plenty of room." I smiled as she stared at me confused.
"What?" She asked just staring. "I mean I could never afford to stay here, and Fei has already offered." She ran through excuses.
"You can just pay me whatever you paid for your apartment and you can have your own side of the penthouse, it will be like we are neighbours again." I smiled, trying to cheer her up. She smiled for a second, before looking down to the bedsheets.
"I don't know…"
"I'll talk to Fei, I'm sure she will agree." I smiled, trying to convince her further. She opened her mouth to protest, but suddenly stopped as Fei walked in. My convincing didn't seem to be working and I couldn't think of anything else to say to convince her other than the truth.
"So, do you want to get ready and we can go back to my place." Fei quickly said, picking out an outfit for Kai to wear out of her bags.
"Look, I didn't want to say anything or worry you, but there might be a possibility that this fire wasn't an accident. So, I think it would be better if you stayed here where I could keep an eye on you." I got up from her bedside, uncomfortably standing in front of their shocked faces.
"What are you talking about?" Kai stared at me wide eyed.
"The taxi driver. Turns out his father is some rich business man and I think that maybe he set something up. I know I said I took care of him and I did, but I didn't anticipate his father to come after you."
"Oh my god." Tears began collecting in her eyes as she looked down to her duvet.
"It's not a 100%, but there is a possibility that it was him. So please, just stay here until we are sure whether it was just an accident." I felt guilty for making her so upset, but I needed her to stay.
"I think that's a good idea Kai." Fei agreed.
"Okay." Tears streamed her face as she nodded. I hoped she was crying because she was worried, not because she didn't want to stay here. She spent the day in bed and Fei spent a couple more hours with her. After she left, it was already 8PM and my cook had set dinner at the table. I knocked on Kai's door, but she didn't answer. I decided to let myself in and found her asleep. I sat down on her bedside, which was enough to awake her.
"Dinner is ready." I said, brushing her hair from her face. She nodded, slowly lifting herself off the bed. She was so fragile. I guided her to the dining room and opened the chair for her. I sat down beside her in silence. As I picked up my spoon for the soup, I noticed her looking at her bandaged hands. She slowly reached for the spoon and delicately held it in between her fingertips. She reached for the soup, but the fumes of the soup seemed to be hurting her as she lowered her hand. I felt awful. I dipped my spoon into her soup and she quickly cocked her head up at me. I rose the spoon full of soup to her face, but she continued to stare at me. After another second, she leaned forward and took the spoon into her mouth. Her eyes quickly glassed over, and a tear rolled down her cheek. I continued to feed her in silence as she continuously looked at me, examining my face. 100% boyfriend material. Once she finished nearly half of the bowl, she looked at me again.
"You eat." She insisted, looking to my cooling soup. I dipped the same spoon into my soup and had some. It was lukewarm, but I didn't care. I continued to interchange feeding her and myself.
"Thank you." She said as we finished eating.
"You're welcome." I smiled, grabbing the bowls. I placed them in the sink, before returning to my seat.
"No, really." She said as she turned to look at me. "Thank you. For saving me, helping me and letting me stay here… and feeding me." She looked deeply into my eyes, I knew it wasn't the right moment, but her face was so close to mine, I couldn't stop thinking about kissing her perfect peach lips. As I lost myself in the thought, she slowly looked away.
"I'm happy I could help, and I will continue to help until you feel better and until you're safe. I promise." I tilted her head by her chin. She smiled sheepishly, looking into my eyes. With each look, I wanted her more and more.
"I'm gonna go shower and go to bed. I'm really tired." She bowed her head, avoiding the temptation I had caught in her eye. "Thank you, again." She smiled as she got up from the chair and made her way back into her room. After a couple minutes I heard the shower run and decided to go back to my room. I sat down on the edge of my bed and just waited. I wasn't sure what I was waiting for, but it felt like there was something I needed to do. Eventually I realised that the need to see her and be around her was the one thing keeping me waiting. I showered and got into bed. The only thing on my mind was Kai. Of course. She's fragile and in pain. She lost everything she ever worked for and everything she ever had; you can't do this right now. She needs time to heal and she needs your support. Feelings need to be put on hold. I continued to try and convince myself as I drifted off to sleep.
