Chereads / Maxing Out From the Start / Chapter 25 - Prologue

Chapter 25 - Prologue

"All allies have been killed. You will respawn outside of the dungeon."

"..."

I got up from my chair and stare at the screen in front of me. Not able to hold in my frustration, I begin screaming.

"AHHHH!!! Idiot Idiot Idiot! How dumb was that tank?! Come on! It is common sense to max out your health stat if you are playing the tank role. What was that person thinking?"

As I scream, I slam my foot onto the ground, creating some loud noises. Then, I make a fist and slam it onto the table.

Having vented to the surrounding emptiness, I relaxed and sat back onto my chair. I then type cursed messages into the surrounding area's chat, cursing off to that tank user.

"(Sigh) What has this game become..."

I'm currently playing an old-school MMORPG, Yolishino. The game was created five years ago but is still up and running with many players. Sadly, the current players are becoming idiotic and creating characters with no thought or logic at all. I mean, tanks need to have max health! That's common sense!

Speaking of which, this game uses a unique leveling and status creation system. This system is one of the main reasons why players still play the game. Like classic games, you get points that you can allocate skills and stats in, but this game's skill list is infinite-like. There are millions of skills you can get that can change the way how you play.

They are still updating the game too. Five hours ago, they updated the game, added some more dungeons, and added a dungeon finder. Before, there were only three dungeons in the game. All of them required a party of three to enter them. Since I always play alone and have no friends, I never experience the dungeons.

Thankfully, this update will allow those with no friends to play the dungeons, but your party members are picked randomly from those who want to join the dungeon. Luck was not on my side since I got a party member who made an idiot of a character... I should report him to the dev for creating a horrible character later...

Anyway, I have been playing this game for the whole five years. I can confidently say that I'm a pro at the game. I also play some other similar games, but this one is my favorite. I use the username of SHO, which is from my real name, Okuma Sho.

I'm 21 years old and have no job. I'm the definition of a NEET, but I don't care. Dropping out of High School and locking myself in my room was the best choice I ever made. A life of playing games, what could be better?

I pear onto the school and move the mouse.

"Okay, on to the next dungeon! I hope my next party members are not idiots like that one guy..."

Before clicking the start of the dungeon finder, my room's door slams open, revealing my angry mother.

"Okuma Sho! Today is the day you change."

"Huh? I'm busy so buzz off."

Ignoring my mother, I face my computer and focus on the game.

"Sho!"

My mother flies into a rampage and grabs ahold of my long, greasy hair. She then pulls on it, forcefully dragging me into the living room.

"When I say today, I mean today! First, you are going to the store to get groceries in your current condition. Then, after getting them and hopefully noticing your grossness, you will take a shower and wash your hair. It's been ages since you did, so today, you are going to shower and continue to take a shower! Also, you'll clean that pigsty of a room. Tomorrow, you'll get a haircut too and then find a job. Do you hear me? You are changing from this day on to a working human of society!"

My eyes turn to dots. Work, clean, move? Is she serious? Why in the world should I do those things?! Just leave me to my games.

Before I could denounce her and rebut, she kicks me out the door and throws money and a list at me.

"Don't bother returning if you don't get the groceries or lose the money!"

After saying this line, she slams the door shut and locks it.

"What the..."

...

Thirty minutes have passed since then. I sat on the ground outside the house for five minutes before realizing my situation. I got up, grab both the money and list, and started moving towards where I remembered town to be.

Since I haven't left my room in the past five years, it took some time to remember where it is. Thankfully, the path I'm on should head straight there.

I don't recall where we live nor why we live far off in the country-side, but I know I live in Japan. The outside air and nature are refreshing, but I want to get back to my computer. I don't plan on doing anything that the old hag wants after this one...

I continue to stroll. I have increased in weight so much that it is difficult to move any faster than a turtle. At my pace, it is going to be another 30 minutes to get to town. At least I'm halfway there...

Then, as I continue to walk, I start noticing a large shadow on the ground. Although it's faint, it seems to be getting darker and darker.

Wondering what it could be, I look up to see a plane that appears to be falling. At that moment, my body froze. I couldn't move. All I can do is look at the falling airplane. It appears to be closing in on me very slowly. I can't hear anything other than the sound of the plane...

I blink a couple of times before understanding my current situation. Then, I try my best to run out of the plane's line of sight, but I'm unable to get away from it in time due to my weight.

The airplane, with flashing and blinking lights, crashes into me. I feel my body get crushed - All of my bones breaking, my fat exerting out of my body, my soul leaving...

The pain was extraordinary. I wanted to scream, but nothing came out. My eyes are fading from red to black. All I could do was take the pain and let the darkness take over me. I then lost consciousness and died.

...

When I awoke, all I could see is darkness. It appears that I'm in some void. I can't feel or hear anything. Nor could I sense my body. It is as if my consciousness is all I have left. Since I have nothing that I can do, I go over everything that recently happened. The idiot... The old hag... My death...

After thinking about it all, an unenthusiasm and a near-robotic voice begin speaking to me.

"Okuma Sho, I welcome you. Here, we will watch your entire history. Afterward, I will score and judge you based on your history. Many outcomes can come from my judgment. Let's watch so I can start judging."

"Huh?! Wait..."

Trying to understand the voice, I try to ask a question, but my words get cut off. My mind starts getting a rush of old memories. It like I'm reliving my old past in hyperspeed.

I'm watching when I was an infant... Then, I saw myself going through school. I saw the day that I quit High School... I saw the days that I spend in my room, playing games, and destroying my hygiene.

While watching my entire life, I feel some guilt and regret about the way I lived it. I regret not trying to get a job, not finishing school, not seeing what I could have become. Maybe, I should have lived a life of not closing society off...

Once the visions were finished, the voice immediately returns.

"Evaluation finished. I will now score and judge you. According to your history, you have been scored a -1340. Due to this anomaly, you have been given a chance to reborn in another world and live a life different from before."

"Huh? I'm really going to another world? Does that mean I'll get some cheat power like the stories in light novels or anime?"

"Answering question: Due to your score, you will have no special ability. Everything in your life will be determined randomly. Your memory of your life on Earth will also be erased, though not completely. You will keep some memories. Mostly, of your death and this encounter so that you can reflect and make good choices this time around. You will now be sent... Goodbye."

"Wait! I still have more questions! What do you..."

Before I could say another word, my consciousness fades.

...

When my consciousness returns, I find myself still in darkness. It feels weird though... It feels as if things are being taken away from me but I don't know what. Wait, who am I? Where am I? I-I can't remember a thing!

No, there is one thing I remember... my death in a world called Earth. I also remember seeing a person? Who was that person, a deity? Huh, what's a deity? WHAT'S GOING ON?!

With that, my consciousness slowly faded again. All I can remember was me losing my mind, trying to understand what happened...
