Chapter 26 - Awakening from Deep Slumber

My consciousness slowly returns. When it does, I find myself alone in a room on a bed.

The room looks like a typical bedroom; however, it seems more 'fancy' than a regular bedroom. Maybe this room or building belongs to some rich people?

I continue to lay in the bed, confused about where I am and who I am. All that I can remember is... Oh, that's right. I died on Earth and met a person who said that I would be reincarnated into another world. Is that this?

I remember him saying that he will take all my memories but a few too. Is this what happens when you are missing memories? Well, if I died at such a young age, they probably weren't that good. I... should try not to die in this world at a young age...

'Anyway, where am I? I mean, I'm alone in a room. Does this place even belong to someone?'

As I think this, someone knocks and enters the room. That person was a female, someone who looks to be in her low thirties? Nevermind her age. She's beautiful!

The female who entered has long flowing white hair and dark green eyes. She is wearing a black Kimoto. Her height seems to be in the middle ground, and her chest is around C cup.

Wait, how do I know all of these terms? If my memories are erased, shouldn't I be no better than a newborn? I mean, I should have lost all my memories of my first steps like walking, talking, hearing, understanding, etc.

Well, I think he did. I mean, I can't recall any time when I was a baby. Not in this world or the other. Maybe he allowed me to keep common sense and terms?

"Sho! You're finally awake! Thank the Gods..."

"?"

The female rushes to me and embraces me tightly. Even though she has C cups, her breast slowly makes it hard for me to breathe. Ignoring that fact, I can feel some tears coming from the girl's eyes.

"Y-you had us so worry! Well, I'm glad you're okay now..."

She separates from me while wiping her tears. Then, she smiles at me.

'She seems to care a lot about me, but I don't know who this person is. I know this might be rude, but I should at least ask her...'

"Umm... W-who are you?"

"..."

Her happiness and smile instantly drain when I say this. Her eyes go wide with surprise too. After a minute of staring at me, she nods to herself, accepting the matter at hand.

"I see... It seems you lost your memories during your slumber. Maybe if we... No, there isn't a skill that could recover memories. Well, I guess this is okay... (Ahem) I'm your mother, Nii Michiko. Your name is Nii Sho. Based on your conversation, it seems you remember common sense and essentials, so I'll only explain some things..."

Michiko, my mother, continues to explain what happened. I'm currently four-years-old and apparently have been in a coma for about three months. Sadly, I can't recall any of the memories from before the three months, so I guess she isn't entirely wrong.

Anyway, she isn't sure how I got this coma. I went to sleep one night, and boom! I got that three-month coma. It's a little weird, but it might have been my fault. I mean, I stole that child's body and brain. That or someone else happened, and before the child died due to the coma, I took his place. I kind of hope it is the latter rather than the former...

After telling me about myself and my current situation, she picks me up and takes me downstairs to see my father. As we travel that way, I take the time to scan around the building.

I don't have any references, but this house is big and somewhat fancy. I was just in the room, which was my bedroom has a huge bed, a large dresser with a handing mirror, and a fancy-looking carpet. The hallway that is outside of my room has large pictures hanging from the wall, most hand-painted.

The floor of the entire building so far is dark oak with white walls. Even the stairs are fancy and use a stylist stair rail.

'Maybe we are rich... Like some noble. Wait, wouldn't she wear fancier clothes if that was the case? I mean, kimonos are a type of fancy, but I don't think nobles would wear them.'

As we go down the stairs, a male appears at the bottom of the stairs and waits for us. Once we made it to the bottom, my mother hands me to him, where he embraces me harshly.

"Son! Y-you alright, right? Thank the Gods that you finally woke up!"

Hmm, so this is my father? He seems tall, at least taller than mom. He wears slightly more formal wear, but still not what I would call Nobility wear. Also, he has spiky short dark-brown hair with brown eyes.

"Honey..." (Mom)

My mother tells him that I have lost my memories during my deep sleep. He understands instantly and then bows to me, saying that he is sorry for his failure as a father. I feel kind of awkward, so I try to comfort him. Let's say that it was effective...

"Anyway, I'll introduce myself then. I am your father, Nii Kaichi."

He smiles at me and hugs me again. Once he finishes, he smiles at Michiko in pure joy. Both of them celebrate while I separate myself, exploring the rest of the house.

...

'This is weird...'

I might have lost my memories of both lives, but my speech and thought process seem to be at the same level as when I died. I can even read books! Sadly, some of the words are incomprehensible to me.

By the way, I found my father's study on the first floor of the house. Inside, there is a couple of chairs for relaxation with a desk. These items are on the right side of the room. The left side of the room is empty, apart from the fact that the left wall is a giant bookshelf with hundreds of books in it.

I took some books off the shelf and tried reading some. That is how I found out that I can read. In some of the books, there are some terms that I'm unfamiliar with, but as I continue to read, I quickly learn their meaning.

So far, I have read ten books, not entirely mind you. I stopped reading the books after halfway through because I only wanted to test my reading ability. Well, the book I'm currently on is different. I mean, I have read more than half the book...

In summary, eight of the books are fantasy and romance books. One of the books is a history book, and the one I'm currently on is a magic and skill book.

Magic and skills both exist in the world and are used in heavy practice. Based on my reading, skills are a necessity in this world. For example, if you want to be an expert chef, you must have a high cooking skill. If you don't have that skill, whatever you are cooking will not be as good as one who has the skill.

Skills are obtainable two ways, through training or buying them with EXP. Training is a cheaper way; however, lots of training and practice must be done. That said, there is a point where training does nothing or does little. When it gets to this point, you'll either have to continue or use EXP to level that skill any higher. Though, at that point, the cost will be exponentially higher than it might be impossible to get anymore.

This is why you will have to plan what you will be to train and spend your points wisely. For instance, instead of getting the cooking skill, you should spend your time getting a weapon skill if you want to be an adventurer.

Anyway, the skills use a system called the World's System. It is the system that controls a person's skill set and status. Statuses are a person's attributes. For example, the attribute 'agility' relates to a person's flexibility. Some skills require agility to be a certain level to obtain.

Your status is set at random at birth. Durring the aging process, attributes slowly increase due to what you do as you grow up. For example, if a child continues to crawl and move around at a constant interval, it is likely that the attribute 'speed' will be their highest attribute compared to their others.

You cannot see your status or skill tree until you get inspected at the church by a person who holds the skill that unlocks the system for a person. Once activated, parents are given control of the child's status and skill tree, but they only get up to 1,000 EXP to spend on their children.

Speaking of EXP, by the time a child gets inspected, around the age of four and five, they should have around zero to two thousand. Those with no luck will have zero EXP, while prodigies will have up to two thousand EXP. By the way, it is said that there is no cap to the amount of EXP you can get, but in typical life, one usually only gets a total of 50,000 EXP in their entire lifetime. On the other hand, the max one has ever gotten written down in history is 80,000 EXP.

Nevertheless, I should be at the age to get inspected. I wonder what type of skills I have or what my status is. Plus, you can earn titles and occupations, though you rarely get any of those at birth or this age.

"Ah, there you are."

My dad enters his study while I continue to read the book in front of me. He looks at me with curiosity. Maybe he doesn't believe that I'm reading the book? Well, who would think a four-year-old to be reading such a lengthy book...

"Hmm, it seems you are 'reading' the skill book. What a coincidence! Since you are back, we were thinking of having you go to the church to get inspected. If you are feeling okay, that is..."

"Yeah, I'm okay with it! I can't wait to see my status."

"Status, huh... Just curious, but do you understand that book?"

"Somewhat... By the way, how did the World System came to be? I mean, it came out of nowhere and can grant skills, but that should be impossible, right? What even powers it?"

"Hmm... It appears you have been reading this book if you know about the World System. Sadly, I can't answer your question because that is one of the world's secrets. Though, scholars believe that an invisible substance that is as abundant as air powers the system. They have called it mana. Also, some scholars believe that the system came from the Gods."

"I see..."

That's interesting... Still, why did the Gods give us this system? If mana is the power source, will we eventually lose the power to use the system when the mana supply runs out? Well, maybe mana restores automatically. Hmm...

"Okay then, we will go to the church tomorrow. Please get some rest. You just woke up from a deep slumber, so you might get sick again if you strain yourself too much."

"Yes, father, I understand."

"G-good..."

With that, he leaves the study while I continue to read. After about an hour of reading, I put the book up, grabbed and ate some food, and head upstairs to get some rest. Although they say that I was asleep for months, I feel as if I haven't had any sleep in a while.

After moving to my bed, I start dosing off into slumber.
