Seweryn saw Mikołaj as well and recognized him. Skrzynecki had the impression that his subordinate was ashamed. The man who argued with him noticed Mikołaj who was watching them and reacted reluctantly, as if with envy, just like Ewka's boyfriend used to react, well, maybe less violently, because Skrzynecki had not been hit on the nose yet.
The situation was a bit awkward. The man looked at Mikołaj as if he wanted to judge him. He was taller, broader and older, but despite his build and the argument that had just been held, he didn't seem dangerous, rather embarrassed. The reaction of Seweryn or Skrzynecki must have suggested to him that these men knew each other and that someone from Seweryn's circle witnessed the scene.
