For the first time in a long time, Rin Avon opened his eyes. Just images slowly blurred into vision, they were hidden by a flood emerging from his tear glands. With one hand, he wiped away the liquid dripping from his eyes, revealing a sight he could never forget.
Surrounded by long iron bars, Rin subconsciously held the columns of metal as he wondered where he was. Past the iron bars which trapped him, crowded in the seats like a group of ants were people with faces completely unknown to him.
Each one of them stared at him with a despising glare. If looks could kill, Rin would already be dead. As he stood straight and still as a tree rooted to the ground, scared any movement would end his life, Rin was unable to understand the situation.
Where am I?
Why am I here?
Where is my family?
Where is Anna?
Rin remembered he was driving his red convertible with Anna, his girlfriend, by his side. As the moon illuminated their faces, Rin leaned towards his girlfriend for a kiss. Her glossy blue eyes reflected his face as she followed his actions with a gentle smile on her petite and cute face.
As Rin's lips pressed on hers, his tongue wiggled into Anna's mouth. A pink blush formed on Anna's cheeks, her heart beat faster. Seconds became days, and days became months. Every moment together felt like an eternity.
But it wasn't forever. The roars of a semi-truck blared in their eyes, a faint red light shined from their side. There was no time for anything, not even regret. The truck smashed into them like a meteorite onto land. Rin blanked out after impact.
Rin woke up, he could not feel any part of his body as if he didn't have one. Rin struggled to open his dry lips. Every breath he took felt like inhaling ash. All the thoughts in his head were spinning, unable to connect until he remembered Anna.
With his mouth increasingly void of any water, Rin slowly pushed words through his throat.
"W..where… is.s… An..naa?" His voice was rasp as he could barely speak.
"Patient is awake." Doctor 1 said.
"Administer another dose of anesthesia." The head doctor replied.
"An..naa?"
"She's dead." The head doctor answered without a single sliver of emotion on his face.
That was the last thing Rin remembered. From driving Anna in the middle of the night to trying to kiss her, he had caused her death. Rin slumped down in his enclosed cage. Anna was his best friend, girlfriend, and future wife. She was his everything.
"Rin Avon, what do you have to say about yourself?" The prosecutor reminded Rin where he was. In a courtroom filled with hundreds of people for a crime, Rin didn't know he committed. Everything almost seemed surreal to Rin except for the accusing faces of the crowd.
"What crime have I committed?" Rin hoped this was just a joke, but his intuition kept telling him otherwise.
"With all the evidence stacked up against you, you are trying to play ignorant?" The prosecutor replied.
"Just give up. There's nothing you can do to change the situation." Rin's defender whispered to him. He clearly wasn't even trying.
As glanced around the room, Rin noticed one thing off. There was no jury. It seems like the only person who would be deciding the fate of Rin would be the judge. But from the slanted eyes, the judge gave him, Rin knew he was screwed.
"For the crimes of burglary, trespassing, and destruction of property, I sentence Rin Avon to 5 years in Grimhope Jail."
Even as Rin was carried off in his iron cage to be thrown into a bus full of other crooks, he continued to carry the same surprised and shocked gasp on his face. But as Rin slowly calmed down, he almost questioned his own two eyes.
As he was hauled out of the courtroom, and for the brief moment before he was shoved into a bus, Rin saw a new world. On the wide streets, people rode on creatures larger than the 6-wheel prison bus he was currently on.
More shocking was what he found beyond the skyscrapers and the streets: it was a dome that enveloped the entire city. As the bus approached the bubble, a passageway opened through the dome, leading to the land of nature filled with creatures and plants unknown to Rin.
While Rin admired the beauty of the world outside the windows, the other criminals glanced at Rin in pity. After all, they were not on a tour, they were off to Grimhope Jail. None of the other passengers bothered to talk to Rin, but one person…
"Hey, I'm Micky, what's your name?" Micky, sitting next to Rin, stretched out his hand with a kind grin on his face.
"Rin. Where are we going?" Rin shook Micky's hand, noticing it was as smooth as glass without a single crease or scratch.
"You're joking, right?" Micky got a blank poker face from Rin. "...We are going to hell. If you survive this, then you'll survive anything."
"Why's that? I'm only in for 6 years." Although Rin was unhappy about going to jail, if he could make the best of the situation, then after 6 years, he would be free. If he was lucky, he could apply for an appeal or get out earlier on good behavior.
"You wish. If it was that easy, the death rate wouldn't be 32% and that's only for first years. 6 years, you better hope for a miracle."
"What about appeals and good behavior?" Rin was worried.
"Unless you have someone backing you, appeals don't work. Good behaviors would only allow you to survive the guards. There's no way out of that hellhole. No way."
Rin was speechless. As Rin looked out the window again, he was no longer admiring the view. As the prison came into view, Rin's ominous feelings were materialized. Grimhope Jail was located in the middle of a lake on a foggy humid island.
Within the waters, an eye the size of a truck poked out. As it followed the bus curiously, Rin froze, deeply terrified. As if God heard his prayers, he could sense something message him in his head.
