Chapter 1 - AWAKE

She inhaled deeply to calm her racing heart and wiped the bead of sweat running down her cheek. She turned and looked reassuringly at her six-year-old daughter, who seemed to live in a world of her own. With a look of indifference and utmost carefreeness, she walked beside her mother, ignoring all the stares and whispers from people towards them. Mia followed her daughter's example, held her head high and exited the airport where they were received by their escort.

She directed them to the Lamborghini Veneno parked in front of the airport, adding more stares. "What happened to being inconspicuous?", a little voice said beside her. Mia shook her head, "I have no idea, it must be Dave's doing."

The child nodded and followed her mother into the vehicle. "At least, we're alone, no driver. How's that?" "It's better, mom". Relief washed over Mia when she saw the bright smile on her daughter's face . Her daughter was the most important person in her life and the most puzzling and mysterious one too.

Before, what happened six years ago, she remembered living in Atlanta working as an author. She tried to remember the hitch, where it all went wrong, but all she met was giant black wall.

"I spy with my yellow and blue eyes, something green", Khalifa said excitingly. Change was good, this was one of the few precious moments where she was nothing but a child, and it warmed Mia's heart. "Hmm, I wonder if it's the trees." "No", Khalifa giggled."Is it the bill boards? " "No, it's the mixture of the color of our eyes." "But that isn't something green." "I know, but then if I didn't do that you'd be correct. I'll try something else" "Yes, ma'am," laughed the woman just as they drove past the amusement park.

She sank back into reverie and wondered what was the reason for what happened. According to Dave and his wife, Martha, they were witnesses to her car crash. They immediately drove her to the Stanford hospital, for immediate attention but she slipped into a five-month-comatose. It was soon discovered that she was pregnant but the baby was fine. Shortly after the baby was delivered, she woke up.

Her benefactors were the two witnesses of her accident, she thanked them profusely but couldn't recall any event despite their vivid description of her accident. It turned out she suffered from dissociative amnesia due to psychological trauma. She remembered everything, except the people and incident responsible for her predicament. Not even the father of her daughter, perhaps he was responsible for her accident. Despite numerous treatment sessions over the past six years, she still couldn't find a single clue to what happened.

But that would be a thing of the past because today she was back in Atlanta, to find out what happened. Today was awake.
