As usual, Anne watched Mina care for Lady before leaving for work. She loved to watch her daughter interact with the child, but it was especially painful when she thought about the possibility of having two grandchildren instead of one. While Anne was extremely grateful for the opportunity to redeem herself as a mother, it was bittersweet because she felt that she had been a major contributing factor in why both of her daughters struggled with life so badly that death was literally their only escape.
Anne knew that Sadie was staying home, so she was not worried about Lady, and although Mina did not like when she and her husband left the house, they decided to take a stroll around the neighborhood. They did not plan to go far; in fact, they had only made it past a few houses when a couple they recognized as Mr. and Mrs. Lee approached.
