"Why didn't you tell me earlier?" Nicholas grabbed her wrist. "Things would've been different."
"In what way? Would you say that you like me if I confessed earlier?" Adeline tried getting off his grip.
"Look, I just can't seem to understand—"
"I'm not telling you this because I'm expecting an answer. You're heart just isn't ready to let someone in right?"
"I-I'm sorry...for hurting you... I never saw you in that way..."
"That's how love works." Adeline wiped her tears, clutching her clothes. "Our heart doesn't always love the right people at the right time. Sometimes we hurt the ones that loves us the most and sometimes we love the ones that don't deserve our love at all."
Nicholas patted her head. "Thank you...for loving me, Adele. I'm so—"
"I didn't know what love felt like until I met you, but now I know what a broken heart feels like too." Adeline caressed his cheeks. "It hurts to know that you will never look at me the way I look at you..."
"You'll find someone better, someone you deserve, Adele."
"Why? Why did it have to be someone else?"
"You and I are impossible... We aren't right for each other."
Adeline grabbed his shirt, tears racing down her cheeks. "Why can't it be me? I was the one that was always there for you. I was the o-one that loved you first..."
"Calm down." Nicholas grabbed her wrist. "I don't wanna lie to you. Please let me go..."
"What if I can't? You weren't suppose to mean this much to me. I wasn't suppose to fall in love. But you know what? I couldn't because you've always been a part of my heart. As long as it's still beating, you'll be right there. Even if it hurts over and over again, I still loved you till the end..."
"Please...just stop loving me... If I can't be the reason of your smile, then I don't want to be the reason of your tears, Adele."
"Why? Is it wrong to fall for in love with my best friend? Was it wrong to think that you had fallen for me too?"
"You know that I'm just trying to—"
"You were a waste of time." Adeline turned her back. "That's what people told me, but I didn't listen. They warned me about the consequences of my actions, but I still refused to take their advices. They told me that you'd just end up breaking my heart, but I was willing to take the risk. I was ready to face reality."
"I hope this doesn't get in the way of our friendship. I still want to stay as friends like we used to..."
"Friends? Right." Adeline bursted into laughter. "Of course we are."
"I tried to tell you about—"
"I'd like some time alone."
"You're still thinking about it? I thought that—"
"I can't be strong all the time. Sometimes I just need to be alone and let all my tears out, Nic."
Several hours after Nicholas left, Dave and Carol decided to have a heart to heart talk with Adeline, hoping that they'd be able to alleviate the pain in her heart.
"We know that you're still angry at us, but we have something important to tell you, honey." Dave touched her shoulder.
"Dad, if it's one of your Lectures again—"
"Your mother and I...we plan to get divorced..."
Adeline took a deep breath. "I let you in because I thought that we'd be able to have a proper talk. You both know that I haven't recovered from the incident this morning! I can't take all the pain your giving me! Why do the people I love keep hurting me...? I just came home and now you're telling me this?"
"We're sorry, honey. We thought that Nicholas was able to make you feel better."
"Him? Comfort me?" Adeline pointed to herself and laughed. "At least give me some time to think before telling me that you're getting divorced!"
"We just can't bear it anymore." Carol touched her hand. "I just don't see any love in this family anymore, Adele."
