Chapter 2 - Not a Siren

"Ophelia, well your not from around here are you?" Damon looked the soaking wet girl up and down. He couldn't decide what was stranger... the way she appeared in the water like a siren or the clothing she's wearing. He decided upon the latter and found himself staring at her strange attire.

"What gave you that idea?" Ophelia voice while firm and sarcastic hinted at the very fear chilling her deeper then the ocean breeze on her wet uniform. "So, where is... here?" Vaguely gesturing to the open water, boat, and thin strip of land on the horizon.

"The great sea of Aegean. Now you strange creature if your not a siren and your not a Greek, what are you? Some sort of lost nymph? Seems like it would be your type. Causing havoc and making poor fisherman to jump out of there boats to save you." Damon said almost playfully as he shifted away from Ophelia leaving her mouth open trying to find an answer like a fish out of water.

"What am I? I'm a girl duh! What do you mean creature? There is no such thing. This is just a dream. This has to be a dream. I'm still in the library. It's fine. I'm gonna wake up when the bell rings anytime now." Her panic crept into her voice and she shivered under her wet clothing. Her hair in a wet tangle looking as wild and untamed as the sea itself.

"Well it's not a dream. I'll bring you into town in the morning. We should reach the shore in a few hours. Maybe someone there knows who you are." Damon extended a folded bundle to the shivering girl, " you may need this so you don't catch a cold. It's nothing fancy but it's all I have."

Ophelia took the cloth and felt the heaviness of the linen. Unwrapping the chiton she looked up at Damon who's clothing had already started to dry. Their eyes met and Damon awkwardly turned away from her.

"I promise I won't look.." he covered his eyes with in sincerity with his cloak.

Ophelia fumbled with the piece of fabric trying to recall any one of her parents lectures on Ancient Greek clothing. When she was sure he was going to keep his word of not looking, she slowly peeled off the soaking wet wool of her school uniform that clung to her small frame. She found the first fastener and attached the pale yellow fabric over her left shoulder. She grabbed the next small plain brooch and repeated on her right. Taking the rope given to her to use as a belt she tied it at her natural waist. She dealt with the shiver of cold that came from the modern soaked undergarments. She had no idea where or when she was but she was going to protect some modesty.

"Thank you." With her words Damon lowered his cloak from his arms and almost laughed at how out of place this girl looked in his oversized clothing.

"In the mean time Ophelia.. get some rest." Damon placed his heavy cloak over her shoulders and laid with his back against the hard wood of the boat. "Come morning we'll find out who or what you are."

Ophelia nodded too dazed by what's happening. Maybe if she went to bed, when she's wake she'd be in the library again.

Damon couldn't help but wonder had he gone crazy? Some girl appeared drowning in the sea and instead of fishing like he was there to do he jumped in to save her. What would have happened if she had been a siren? She would have led him to the death. She was unlike any of the women he's ever seen before. He tried not to stare but her features were striking. Her hair was like fire itself. Her skin like the whitest beach sand. He dared think and ask forgiveness to Aphrodite for he believed this creature made Aphrodite pale in comparison. Maybe he had gone crazy. Either way he watched her carefully until she laid her head against her arm and slept under the safety of a strangers cloak.

He stretched one last time before closing his eyes. Eros have you pierced my heart or have you betrayed me again?
