Chereads / Five Flights / Chapter 2 - Forest

Chapter 2 - Forest

I had decided that we all had to move somewhere else. Scales might find us and kill us on the spot. I remember one time when Tidal had accidently tripped Scales with her tail. Scales scarred her so much that she said, "It should have been me1 I'm sorry!" and Scales replied with, "Anyone can be replaced, remember that, idiot.". I never understood why Scales hated Tidal so much. When I came up with the idea to move away, Tidal started to ask where. That was a hard one for me. I wanted to answer all of her questions. I wanted to be her prince in shining armor. But I was too afraid that she would find out. She would never love me. She was my princess. And if I knew what I was about to say was the worst, I would have kept my snout shut. "We could try to find your family. I'm sure they miss you!" I said. Tidal's face lit up like the stars. It was a beautiful moment. We flew off towards the Moonwing kingdom. I never truly understood why there had to be 5 of us. Me, Desert, and Tidal were raised by Scales. Her mate raised the other two. When the war had lasted 14 years, we were supposed to meet up and save the world together. But of course, we had to escape only a month before New Moons. I could have met a real Frostwing! And maybe a Shadowwing that wasn't so rude and grumpy. I hated how Tidal thought that Desert was left out our secret little games. But no, me and Desert kept BIG secrets from Tidal. Like how Desert can shoot lava out of her teeth under her tongue. It was weird, but powerful. I think that might be the reason we were chosen. Now again, we were weird, but that was OK in my book! We saw at least a million Moonwings in the air. We landed in a bushy black ashy tree. "Ew…" Desert exclaimed as we landed. But Tidal just looked at the ashy tree, face filled with excitement. I saw a tall building in the biggest tree. It was black, but had a few white and yellow spots in it. I guess those spots are dragons. But what are the yellow things? I looked closer and found that the yellow spots were dragons! What kind of dragon is yellow? I looked at one of the yellow dragons. It's scales turned a deep blue, like a Moonwings. "...C-Can you do that t-too!?!" I whispered to Tidal. She didn't answer so I guess that was a no. I swear I saw a Frostwing, about our age probably. But when I blinked, it was gone. I crept closer and peered off of the edge to try and see if I was imaging or not. "Who are you? What do you think you're doing?" I spun around and came face-to-face with a Frostwing about our age. Not. "uh...uh….." I couldn't find my voice.

"We are a part of the Five Flights! And you are?!?" Desert said from somewhere beside me. Frostwings were known to be the color of snow, and not to mention they can read minds! You idiot! Stop being scared and keep your mind blank! "I am also a part of the prophecy… I came to find you. Scales is very upset." The Frostwing said in a your dead voice. Before I could think, The Frostwing fell over with an odd jerk of her head. There was nothing but a floating rock. Then blue scales came flooding in, one scale at a time. When the Moonwing was done, a shimmering Tidal came into view. "Y-yes, yes I can do that." She said in a cute shy voice. It took a lot in me not to blush. I definitely didn't need red or pink under my scales. "Cool!" Desert was the first to respond. It hurt that she lied to me. Well she didn't say no, but she didn't yes either. Tidal must be good at reading my face because she asked me what was wrong. "I'm fine" I said in a tone more bitter than I meant for it to be. "Oh.. ok then.". That hurt worse. Seeing her sad was horrible. But when I made her sad, I died a little on the inside. After that, Tidal said she had to go into her home, alone. While we sat there in that black and ashy tree, guarding our "prisoner" is what she said. After she flew away, I somehow still saw her. "I'm going after her, stay here." I called to Desert. "WHAT?!! You can't do that! You'll be caught and killed on sight!" Desert remembered to keep her voice quiet. "Well you always said that you were big and strong, so prove it." I said that without looking behind me. I felt Desert stiffen up before I spread my wings, so I know that my plan worked. I tried to fly as low as the ground. But it would work better if the ground was as green as the forest. I didn't blend in as well, but there were other dragons that were kinda greenish, like me. I could see Tidal entering one of the lower balconies so I flew faster than I ever have before. Exhaustion flood over me from the flight here, but it didn't matter. I loved her, and I was going to save her. Even if she didn't need saving. I flew up towards the low balcony to find a pretty decent room. It was small, but cozy. There was a leaf-cloth couch looking in the middle of the room. A bright pink carpet covered with with lily pads, flowers, and what smelled like honey. I could see just the end of Tidal's tail as she left the room. I hurried after her. But when I got there, I found a big green spiral leading to the top of the fortress. Luckily all I had to do was stick to the wall while running. I blended in perfectly well with the beauty of the forest-y fortress. I found Tidal on the top level. It was the biggest, and it had a more, I'm the boss of you, feeling to it. Tidal was sitting in front of a big elder dragon. It sounded like they were in the middle of a conversation. "-ears ago, I am that child. If you could just tell me who my mom or dad is, they say you are the all knowing." Tidal was speaking. "Yes, I am all knowing. But it is better if you don't know who your family is." The elder dragon had a sweet and jolly voice. But his voice had kind of a rough edge to it. Like this topic bugged him. "Please! I have very powerful friends, and at any moment, they will come in here to kill you if you don't tell me!" Tidal was, begging?!? Or she was lying. "Nice threat. But no." This time the elder dragon's voice was cold and bitter. "It's not a threat, it's a promise." Tidal said in the same tone then sat down again. "Fine. Your father killed your mother and your two other sibling after you were taken." The elder dragon's voice sounded worried. "Wha-what.." Tidal sounded hurt. Oof. "Yes, and your father is Core himself." The elder dragon flicked his tail and some guards came to push Tidal back out of the room. When the doors closed, Tidal just sat there, looking at her talons. Then she did something that broke my heart, literally and mentaly. She started to cry. It was long and painful. I wanted to so badly reach out and comfort her. But it might scare her, so I didn't. I just stood there, feeling as helpless and useless as Scales said I was. But she cleaned herself up pretty quickly. She started to turn around, then sat back down again. "Forest, you know you've always been bad at hide and seek right?" Well that was creepy. "I know" I tried to say cooly. I again stuck to the walls and the ground as we went back to Desert. It was quiet the whole time. And if Tidal had said something, I didn't hear it. When we got back, Desert was sitting on top of the now conscious Frostwing. "How'd it go!?" Desert said that with what sounded like hope. "Turns out Core murdered my mom and other siblings after I got taken. Oh and he is my dad." Tidal sounded chill. Like she wasn't bothered by it. Like she hadn't been crying.

Desert looked shaken. "Ouch…" The Frostwing spoke like she was sorry for her. "Hey, what is your name?" Tidal had that sweet voice that I loved so much. "Uh-Uh… well, my name is Storm." Storm… huh. Sounds like a Shadowwing name. "Cool! I'm Tidal, that's Forest, and the big one is Desert." Desert looked like she was about to explode. "SO YOUR CALLING ME FAT NOW!" yep. She was angry. "No-" "If it wasn't for my ice cool scales, I would have been melted to a crisp by now!" Storm cut off Tidal. I was about to yell at her but then I realized that she did it before Desert could strangle the poor Moonwing. We flew off for the Windwing area next. Hopefully my parents will not be as bad as Tidal's. When we breached from the clouds, we saw a small floating building. When we entered the The floating building, it looked to be abandoned. "We can stay here for now." I tried to sound like a leader. "Did your voice get deeper?" Tidal tried to hide a laugh when Storm said that. We spent the night in the building, then I told everyone to stay put while I try to find my family.``Wait, you came with me while we were finding my family. Why can't I go with you? I'll just camouflage!" I didn't want her hurt. But I had to say yes… While we were flying, I saw Tidal practically get eaten by the sky. "Wow, you're getting good at that" I tried to act like I wasn't startled. It was silent for a while. When we neared the village, I noticed that there was a roof. "Oh great. We have to go through security." Tidal was sarcastic, but I could tell she was nervous. "Here, just try to look like me." Tidal's scales started to turn green. "But I'm not nearly your size." She was right. She was more like half my size. "Just act like a dragonet, I'll pretend like your my daughter." Tidal nodded her head and hopped on my back. When we landed I whispered to her to stay on my back. "Hello sir. State your name and business." There was definitely a guard. "Oh, me and my perfect daughter, Moss were just trying to get home." Tidal snorted but quickly hid it with a cough. "Ok sir. And your name is?" The guard seemed friendly. "Forest. Sir" The guard grunted and the gates opened up. Inside were just a lot of little huts. But I noticed the ones on the top floor were huge, and they probably had access to the roof. "Alright get down" Tidal tried to act like a dragonet and slid down my wing. Which hurt considering she wasn't really a dragonet. We flew up to one of the big houses that looked like no one owned it. We were right. "Ok… this is um. Cozy." Tidal was not impressed. "Let's go find the thing that leads us to the roof." Me and Tidal bolted off. When we found it, I ran back to the kitchen to get something big. There was nothing, so I told Tidal to turn her scales yellow so I could lead the others back here. I flew off and found the abandoned house. "Guys! We are in! Tidal is waiting for us. We found a big house with access to the roof. Come on, let's go!" Everyone was so rushed by me, we kinda almost fell out of the sky. I saw a yellow dot on one of the spots on the roof. We flew down and Tidal gave hugs to everyone. Well, everyone but me. We decided to stay here for a while. You know, laying low. We had food, and beds. It was perfect. We all slept in a pile, like when we were little. Storm decided to sleep in another room on a different leaf pile. Desert kept shifting so that I slept close to Tidal. It was amazing! Our tails entwined with one another, she held my talon! She was asleep for most of it, but I wasn't!! When we woke up the next morning. Tidal almost screamed. I held my paw up to her mouth. "Shhh. It's ok." Tidal seemed to calm down. "What happened here! Get off me!' Tidal wasn't calm, she was disturbed. I just looked at the ground. Tidal got up and went to the room with Storm. "Wow. You were totally cool. That went so well." Desert was being sarcastic, even at this moment. I started to laugh but quickly stopped. We all went up to the roof. "What should we do now?" Storm was talking. Jeez, she still startled me. "I don't know." Just then, a bunch of guards came down on us and shot some kind of dart at our necks. I could see Tidal's camouflage shift from purple to blue. I guess she was really scared. That was the last memory I had before I woke up in some kind of prison. Each one of us were put in pairs. I had Desert. Out of all of us. Tidal looked like she was with some other Shadowwing. I guessed some other Windwing that was on the roof saw us. There was a ledge and a cave dug into the wall. Some weird clear-white stuff trapped us around it.

"Mojo. Mojo. Mojo." Desert kept chanting that word while pacing around. "What's a mojo?" Desert looked at me in shock. "You don't know?!? There is this all mighty and powerful dragon. It's most commonly found in Shadowwings. But that's not the point! This stuff is a spell by a mojo dragon!" Desert was excited and nervous. "And…?" I wasn't getting whatever the message was. "And?!! I'm trying to remember what can defeat mojo magic! Do you remember anything?" She looked at me with hope. I didn't want to let her down, but I truly didn't know anything. I grunted as I got up and walked up beside her. "Why don't you try to put your lava on it?" She looked at me like I was an idiot. I sat down. "Go ahead. You'll never know unless you try." She rolled her eyes at me and spit some lava on the stuff. The lava did nothing but slide down onto the floor. Some of the floor melted away. "Wait a minute. That's it! Spit some more lava on the floor, enough for a dragon to fit through!" Desert looked surprised at my random smartness. She spit more lava and we watched the floor crumble away slowly. When it was big enough for me to fit through, I got down slowly. I wasn't aware of any guard around, but I didn't want to find out the hard way. I stuck my head out first, checking for anybody. Nope. I guess they are all at the front. GAH! Desert pushed me out of the hole, then started to spray more lava so she could fit through. I found Tidal's ledge and asked Desert to spray her lava on the platform. From the bottom. The lava was dripping onto the ground. I jumped back so I didn't get burned. Desert just stood there, spraying more and more. When the hole was big enough for a dragon to fit through, Tidal burst out, paws open. She landed on Desert and pulled her into a big hug. "We were captured by the Frostwings! They took Storm!" Tidal was pumped up with adrenaline. The other Shadowwing popped out and said, "Storm? You mean the Frostwing I was raised with?" Wait. This couldn't be the other dragon. "Yes… and you are?" I was too confused to be shy. "Oh.. I'm Dasher. And no, I am NO PET of Santa!" We were all just on the floor laughing. "Get up! Come on, we have to go save Storm!" Apparently he didn't get the moto. We are the most lazy dragonets out there. He started to run off after the entrance. "On Dasher!" Tidal cried. We all just burst into another pile of crying, laughing, dragonets. We were only 12 years into the war, and yet we still learned nothing. We have lived for about 5 years, and all we did was fight. But when it came to the real world, we all just sat there laughing. Like the war was a joke. When we were done, we saw Dasher running towards us with at least 15 Frostwing guards behind him. "Scatter and counter attack!" Dasher shouted at us. We just ran in different directions. We had no idea what that meant. Well Desert might, but me and Tidal did not. A guard's spear came dangerously close to my leg. I used my tail when his face got closer, trying to get my leg again. I had no choice, I hit him with my tail and he let out a shriek followed by a heartbreaking CRACK. The guards body was just a limp pile of metal and ice scales. The other Frostwings stopped chasing me so I ran to help Desert. But when I got there, she had melted off their faces with her lava. "I saw what you did, now we're even." Apparently she had seen me kill a guard. Great, now she has expectations. I looked around to see if I could help Tidal, but she was nowhere to be seen. Dasher was gone too. I saw a piece of the cave wall stick out, then change into the snow like the blizzard outside. Nevermind, I found them. I ran over to them and shouted, "How far can we fly before we freeze!?" Dasher looked at me and let his scales not be invisible. "We have about a day, if we rest now. But from here, right now. I estimate we have about only enough time to leave the land." "OK!" I tried to shout over the storm, but my words were caught by the wind. I nodded my head at him, Tidal was still camouflaged and Desert finally caught up to us. We flew as fast as we could out of there.

2 Hours later

We had to land. Well more like me and Desert's wings gave out. It was warmer, but we weren't out of the Frostwing territory. "Our first fight was easy!" Tidal was surprisingly not tired. "No, it wasn't. We caught them by surprise. We killed their men, we are the enemy. They will stop at nothing to kill us." Dasher was officially scary. The sun was setting when we found a cave big enough for all of us to sleep in. In the middle of the night, I heard soft singing from Desert. She was singing our song. "From the 14th of the war; Five wings come your way; From the 14th of the war; Five wings to save the day; The hottest hatchling, will bring you fire. In the rubble of death, find the egg of the brightest white; From deepest in the forest, shall bring you the egg of black; In the winterland, awaits the egg of ice; The clouds above shall bring you wings of wind; The ruler in the black Star to the Light, in the deepest Core; Two shall die, and one shall mourn; If the chosen ruler ever bows; They shall have the power of Black Fire…" Jeez. She is a total freak. When morning came around, we took off immediately. It was horrible, I didn't even have time to yawn. My wings still ached and shivered. But we had to find Storm. She wasn't in the prison outpost. She must be in the village. We had to go save her somehow…
