Synopsis
The government has been keeping something from us, a deadly weapon. It isn’t a bomb, or a gun, or a super soldier, but rather a virus capable of killing even the strongest of it’s victims. The death rate is 100%, but those who die from it don’t stay in the grave. They come back as something stronger, faster, bloodthirsty. Your loved ones become monsters, nicknamed Nightmares. Now meet Ember, a young girl from a small coastal town in North Carolina. Her world has already been turned upside down once, and she never fully got over it, but this virus will surely change everything again. With no family left and no one to count on except for an infuriating stranger, will she be able to adjust to the new world? Xander wasn’t far away from the first cases of this virus when it first broke out, but he was one of the few to immediately take this seriously even before the Nightmares starting coming back to life. He started running, leaving behind everything he knew to stay ahead of the virus. Then he arrives in a small town in North Carolina, where he hopes to be safe for a while. It’s here that he stumbles across a girl with a fiery personality, and a strong will to survive. He badly wants to help this girl, but she keeps pushing him away. Will he be able to break down her walls? Will they be able to survive when everything they once knew is gone?

Chapter 1 - What Happened?

Can't Save The World? Then Prepare For Its End.

"The virus is out." Everyone freezes where they are at those four words. Finally, after what seems like a long time, the talking starts.

"How did this happen?"

"But we don't have a cure yet!"

"Why did this have to happen to me?"

"I have to get out of here."

A man stands on a chair to make his presence known. "SHUT UP!" he yelled above the noise. Everyone falls silent again. "The building has to go on lockdown, everyone here must be quarantined and stay isolated. You all know what will happen if anyone leaves, and quite frankly it's too late to leave anyway." He's right, they do know. Slowly, the people present realize with a sinking heart that it's too late for them, they are going to die. The last thing that they must do is protect everyone outside of the building.

The government has been keeping something from us, something that they have been developing for a long time. It's weapon, but this time, it isn't a bomb, or a gun, or anything you might see in a spy movie. No, it's much more dangerous than that, and it's designed to wipe out entire continents of people. A deadly virus.

"What's happening to him?" The doctors haven't seen anything like this before. The quarantine had come too late, shifts had already changed by the time the leak was discovered. The virus is spread by kissing, biting, and scratching. The man on the hospital bed is flailing wildly, despite efforts to hold him down. His fingernail catches on the skin of a nurse, leaving a shallow scratch that barely bleeds, she doesn't even notice it at first.

"Doctor, we're losing him," the nurse says. The man's heartbeat is slowing down. The pupils of his eyes are dilated, making what used to be green look black. Finally, he lays still. The man is dead. The scratched nurse goes home that afternoon. She kisses her husband and her children, not knowing that those actions are a death sentence for them.

A couple of days later, she wakes up thinking she has a cold. It's just a stuffy nose and a headache. She goes to work anyway. Lately, they have been getting more and more patients like the one they has recently lost.

It starts out like a cold, but as time progresses so do symptoms. It changes to sore throat, cough, hair loss, insomnia, sleepwalking, fever, nausea, dizziness, loss of appetite, tiredness, double vision, and finally, convulsions. You may also notice a change in personality, such as a shorter temper and mood swings. She doesn't make the connection.

It takes them over two weeks to realize what's starting to happen. People are dying, but they don't stay dead. They come back as monsters, beasts. They are faster and stronger now, far from your typical zombie.

It's spreading rapidly, people everywhere are dying. Many try to flee, going to other cities, wanting to stay ahead of the virus.

Even man's best friend is not safe. The animals are getting sick too. The loving pet dog that you have had for years could very well be the one who kills you. Even the animals know to flee from the virus.

Will anyone escape it?
