Chapter two
" Did it work, did you find any" she asked anxiously as Elena walked in.
Elena shook her head and she sighed. She needed a job badly, she had checked for online jobs but none was available, her best friend Elena tried to get her a job in the Del monte's coffeehouse where she works but all to no avail.
" I'm so sorry Diane" Elena was apologetic " I tried to talk to Fabio but he just bounced me"
She flashed her a warm smile. Of cos Elena just likes to be dramatic she knew Elena had done her best even if she hadn't she would still be greatly indebted to her.
Three years ago, Elena took her in when she was in her most difficult time. She was four months gone when her so called boyfriend disappeared from home one night, she was so devastated that she looked for a way to get rid of the pregnancy, to rid herself of anything that belonged to him, at that moment she didn't want to weigh the risk and the reward she just wanted to go on with it, her womb could get damaged, hell, she could die in the process.
Thinking about what happened, she was glad Elena stopped her, she was glad Elena slapped some sense into her, she was glad she didn't terminate what turned out to be a beautiful baby girl, Ruby.
" I'm just so worried about Ruby" she sighed " I want her to have the best, I never ever want her to lack anything"
" Yeah, I understand" Elena replied " we've brought Ruby up together, we'll still do it, I have a job"
" You'll be getting married to Jason very soon. I need to be able to stand alone, to be able to provide for the both of us. You won't be in our lives forever"
Elena nodded, she knew that whatever Diane was saying was the absolute truth, in the next two weeks she'd be married to her high school sweetheart.
" I'll try again tomorrow, I'm sure this time around Fabio won't turn me down"
" Thanks" she smiled.
" So where's my goddaughter" Elena changed the topic as she ransacked the fridge for leftovers.
" She left with Andrew"
" Andrew" Elena dragged out
Diane rolled her eyes, she knew what Elena was insinuating. Andrew is the guy who lives next door, he's a charming fellow and he has the hots for her, courtesy of Elena.
" There's no need to lie or deny that Andrew isn't madly in love with you" Elena asked, her left hand resting on the table as she eats the leftover pepperoni pizza she found in the fridge.
" He isn't" she states
" Oh gosh! Diane, do you need a soothe sayer to tell you that, don't you notice the way he stares at you, how he's so fond of Ruby, don't even get me started on Ruby, she adores that young man"
She clenched her jaw, she didn't like talking about this as it brought bad memories back, memories she never wants to recollect.
" I'm not ready for such" she stated trying to close the topic but Elena being Elena wouldn't drop it.
" I get Mo..."
She cut her off immediately " don't mention his name anywhere near me"
Elena nodded in understanding.
" I just want the best for you Diane and Andrew is the perfect guy. I'll be getting married soon, I want to leave you in the hands of someone who loves and adore you"
She scoffed " You speak to me like I'm a kid. I can take care of myself Lena"
" Yeah, I know that but..."
" Lena, can we please not talk about my love life. I don't need a man, I don't need commitment the last time I committed my heart was broken, I don't need that. My life is perfect with Ruby, you and Jason." She ranted and stormed out off the sitting room.
Elena sighed defeated. She knew Diane just won this round again, she always does but she wouldn't give up, this topic would be brought up another time.
Diane pressed her back to the door heaving heavily, she was pissed, really pissed talking about her love life brought bad memories. She slid to the floor and hugged her knees to her chest as tears streamed out. It has been three years, three long years but it still hurts like it was yesterday.
She still loved him, she's still waiting for him to walk through the door any minute and tell her he is sorry and he wants her back, she wished, and she still wishes for it everytime she goes to bed, every single time she sees Ruby. Sometimes she wonders what it will be like with just the three of them, she dreams about them baking a family apple pie only to be awoken by the harsh reality of life.
She sobbed loudly knowing, he abandoned her and the baby, he didn't care for her that all his promises were lies, all lies.
" Diane" Elena called knocking on the door but no answer came, the only thing she could hear was the loud sobs from Diane.
Elena was mad, pissed she hated the fact that her best friend was still madly in love with the bastard. She had tried severally to get Diane to forget about him but Diane is still insistent on not forgetting him.
" Diane, please open the door" she pleaded.
Some minutes later, Diane pulled the door open and let Elena in.
" I... I want to get over him " she sobbed and Elena pulled her into a hug.
" I know you can do it" Elena coax
" I'm trying my best Lena, I'm trying. I want to be strong for Ruby" she said in between sniffs.
" You're strong, Ruby knows that, I know that, everyone knows that"
