Chapter 1 - THE WIDOW

"We are gathered here today to celebrate the life of our heroes. They were there to defend us from the invading forces that plan to trample on our lands and take our lives. For without them, we would not be able to stand here together to honor them. We thank them for not letting us be enslaved by our barbaric neighbors. Let's thank them from the bottom of our hearts."

A chorus of thank yous were then heard from the crowd.

Then one by one, people stood up and went to the heroes' coffins, laying white roses on top of it.

Cries amd wails filled the air.

Georgia, having heard the commotion, snapped out of her reverie. She stood up slowly, her hands supporting her now growing belly.

She walked slowly, clutching her white rose with such strength that its stem has bent slightly.

When he reached General Shaw's coffin, tears started falling from her eyes.

Yes, they called him a hero. A hero who saved their country from being pillaged. A hero who gave them more hope in living their lives in their own coutry.

He is a hero.

But he is also her husband.

The father of their son.

She knew of the dangers of his line of work, but losing him was a big blow to her life. She was lost on how to raise her kid without someone to help her.

She was alone, with no one to lean on to. How was she supposed to raise one more life?

Her hands slowly moved to touch the coffin. Her hands shaking from too much crying. She placed the rose tenderly and caressed the mirror on top of her husband's face.

"I love you."

A moment later, loud gunshots were heard followed by a band playing a sorrowful song.

The coffins were slowly lowered and were now buried six feet below the ground.

The crowd slowly dispersed and went on their way separately leaving Georgia sitting alone in front of her husband's grave.

She was humming a song, her tears never stopped falling. Her hands were tenderly rubbing her belly.

"Baby, please be fine. Momma will take care of you very well. Say goodbye to Dada."

And Georgia howled in grief.

--------

Rain splattered on the roof of Georgia's small flat. She was folding her husband's clothes, deciding to sell some of it to support her for her upcoming labor. She only left out her husband's and her favorites, which was proven to be a difficult job. Everything was her favorite.

She sighed. She was left with no choice but to choose. She wasn't allowed to work yet because she was 8 months pregnant.

When finally she was done, a soft knock came from the entrance door.

She grudgingly stood up and opened the door.

A young man stood in front of her, his face expressionless.

"Good evening madam. I'm Lieutenant Hargreeves from the President's Private Army. I am here to offer you my deepest condolences and to give you the President's reward."

Her eyes widened. "Reward?"

"Yes madam. The President opted to give a reward to the soldiers who fought in the battlefield and for the exemplary service they gave to our country."

Lieutenant Hargreeves took something from his inside pocket and handed it to her. It was a bank ATM card.

"The reward has been placed in this account. You may retrieve the PIN from the bank when you have the time."

Georgia took the card reluctantly. She thought that this was a sort of compensation for the life that the dead soldiers would have lived. But she accepted it nonetheless. She needed more money now more than ever.

"Thank you Lieutenant," she replied softly.

He nodded and took his leave.

Georgia shut the door and sat tiredly on the couch. She wished dearly that all the things tormenting her now would end. She sometimes wished that taking her life would end her misery but a kick from her little general steered her back to the path of life.

She knew that her path ahead will be hard, full of suffering and torment. But she stood her ground to take it head on for the sake of their son. His little one was the only living reminder of her husband. This was the only hope for her to heal and live happily once more.

For the sake of her two loved ones, she will continue fighting to attain a good life.

But for now, a good night's sleep would do.

And so she slept.

------

By late morning, she checked the amount the President gave her at the local bank. She was shell-shocked of the amount, a million dollars. She couldn't believe the amount of money their country has that they could give away a million to so many citizens.

It was more than she hoped for. So now, she decided against selling her husband's things.

"I'll leave them be. I have a million to spend. After birthing my son, the remaining money will be used for my business."

She smiled contentedly and went to the mall to purchase her and her baby's needs. One month is too soon already and she hasn't bought anything yet for her baby. She and her husband had planned before to buy it together, but fate is cruel.

She looked up to the sky to stop her tears from falling. She didn't want to catch attention and be tagged as a poor widow in the middle of the street.

When she felt somehow good, she resumed walking towards the mall.
