Georgia's delivery date was getting nearer. But she was still busy packing all of her stuff. Yes, she was ready for the delivery but living in the city, paying for rent and raising a baby was too much for her.
So, she planned to move to the farmland she inherited from her deceased mother. There she would use the land again to plant crops and sell. There, she would not pay any rent for a house. And raising a baby would not be so difficult since some of her relatives live near the farm.
Georgia smiled contentedly of the plan she made for her future.
Just then, she felt pain on her belly. She held it for a little, seeking relief. But relief never came and instead the pain came wave after wave.
"Oh God, is my baby going out?"
She felt something burst inside her and a warm liquid trickling down her legs.
She screamed in pain, "Oh baby, baby relax. I'm going to the hospital okay?"
Sweat beaded down her forehead and she unconsciously called out for her husband.
"Honey, our baby's going to see the world. Aaahh please baby wait okay?"
She breathed in and out and slowly took out her phone to dial emergency. Good thing the operator quickly answered.
"Hello goodmorning maam. What is your - "
Georgia cut off the speaker, "I think I'm going into labor and I am alone in the house."
"Please hold on for a second maam as we trace your location. Are you at 555 Winnipeg Street?"
"Yes," Georgia breathed out painfully.
"Okay, I want you to relax and continue breathing deeply. The ambulance is on its way. For safety purposes maam, please don't drop the call."
"Okay, thank you."
Georgia breathed in and out again, when the pain lessened a little, she slowly stood up and sat on the couch.
She held her belly and said, "Baby, hang on for a little okay. Momma's going to get you out safely okay?" She didn't care that the other person on the line heard her baby talk. All she cared was the pain and delivering her baby safely out to the world.
She grabbed her bag and held it close. The intense pain was back but relief swept through her when she heard the loud siren of the ambulance.
She said to the phone, "I think they're here."
"Yes. Are you alright?"
"I will be. Thank you."
"No problem maam. Have a safe delivery."
The phone went dead as soon as the door opened and the EMTs came in.
They brought in the stretcher and let her lie down. A woman took her bag from her and placed it inside the vehicle.
"What hospital maam?"
"Goodwill Medical Center."
They nodded and Georgia felt she was now high in the air. She was placed inside and a BP cuff and a pulse oximeter was then attached to her body.
The EMT looked at her and said, "Your vitals are good maam. You're doing a great job. We'll be in the hospital for 2 minutes tops. I want you to tell me when you're feeling something wrong, got it?"
Georgia nodded groggily. The pain was almost unbearable to bear but she held on. This was for her baby, her sweet angel.
A moment later, the ambulance stopped and an intense bright light assaulted her senses. Her stretcher was hoisted out again and there she saw she was at the hospital. Her bag was beside her once again.
They came quickly into the ER and a doctor assessed her.
Georgia felt something touch her but she didn't mind. It was how they test if the baby's ready to get out. She knew how the delivery would go and had no qualms about it.
"She's at 8cm already. I can already see the head," the doctor shouted. "Go open a DR for me and call Dr. Drews. She's her OB."
A flurry of white people ran to and fro in Georgia's vision. She was sure she would deliver soon.
A face came near her and she heard it say, "The baby's almost out maam. We're getting you to a DR immediately. I want you to breathe in and out."
This was the doctor probably. But Georgia followed her orders. She felt her bed was being moved.
"That's right maam. We're almost there. Dr. Drews is on the way."
When they reached the DR, Georgia never felt so confused. All around her, people were running, setting up things and all. Added to her constant pain, her head started to throb.
"Doctor," she called out weakly.
"Ma'am?"
"My head is aching."
"Don't worry ma'am. You're going to be fine. We will start soon. Just breathe with me okay?"
And another breathing technique ensued.
Georgia on the other hand, was feeling more and more pain. She gripped the sheets and a pained moan escaped from her mouth.
She felt something prick her hand and hands that are trying to cover her body with some soft fabric.
Georgia felt something trying to come out of her. She believed that she needed to push it out to take the pain away. So she started to push it out.
She heard someone cry out, "Crowning! She's crowning!"
People flocked around her. She could barely hear and see them. Her pain clouded her senses. All she felt was to push it out.
"Hhmmngggg..." two deep breaths and another push.
On and on the cycle repeated. And at last she heard a faint cry.
Tears started streaming down her face as she heard her baby's first sound.
All at once, she could finally hear the voices of the people around her. She heard a lot of congratulations and the doctor saying that her baby boy was healthy.
But all her senses focused on that teeny tiny blob of joy in the doctor's arms who was squirming and crying as if she was looking for something.
Unconsciously, Georgia reached out her hand to touch him. The doctor, following her gesture, placed the baby near her chest.
It was at that moment that Georgia felt all the happiness in the world. She knew that all her trials and suffering were worth it if she could see this angel alive and happy.
