Chapter 15 - Outside

[You have left Dungeon "The Depths"]

Mennok looked around, noticing that he was completely surrounded by greenery. According to Jenny they were called plants. They ranged from the smallest of shrubs to the largest of trees. He looked at these large trees and saw small feathery creatures tweeting happily on the branches. Wind whistled around tree trunks and leaves, disturbing their inhabitants. A small white creature came out of the brush. Mennok held up his weapons, prepared to fight, but the thing did nothing. It stared at him for a little bit then left off.

Weird. That was the first creature that he encountered that didn't attack him other than Jenny. He was fascinated by it, so he decided to follow where it was going. He walked through the underbrush, clearing away leaves that had stuck to him or obstructed his view. The animal seemed to want him to follow it, so it stopped every now and then just to make sure he was still following. After minutes of walking he arrived at a river flowing with crystal clear liquid. It looked very similar to what Jenny called "water" and was drinking back in the Dungeon. He noticed that she hadn't drank it in a long time, so he placed the chair with Jenny on it at the stump of a tree and went over to gather some of the clear liquid. He knelt over and placed his hands inside the river. The water was cold but soothing to his hands, washing away all the dirt and dry blood that had been on them.

He cupped his hands and pulled the water into them. He stood up and began to walk towards Jenny but by the time he had reached her the water had all disappeared through his fingers and seeped into the ground. He needed something which could hold the water properly. He searched Jenny's belt for the thing which she used to hold the water but he couldn't find it on her, meaning he had to find something else to put the water in.

He picked one of the leaves and tried to cup it in his hands but they were too small to properly hold water. He searched around trees and bushes looking for something but could not find anything but a small tree log. He needed something round like his cupped hands but with no holes. He looked above at the tree and saw a bird pecking the wood at a rapid speed, making dents in it and chipping off splinter by splinter.

This gave Mennok an idea, so he went to pick the small log back up and then took out one of the daggers and began carving pieces from the inside to try and make it deeper and more round. 10 minutes and a rough job later, Mennok had finally made something which resembles his hands but had no holes. He went over to the river and submerged the carved log, picking up water in the middle. He let the carved log hover for a bit, finding that no water had leaked out of it.

[Acquired skill ]

He had just acquired a skill from using the dagger in the log which reminded him of something he had to check later but for now he walked over towards Jenny, opened her mouth slightly and gently poured the water into her mouth. After emptying the log he went back to the river and scooped in more water then poured it into Jenny's mouth. After he was done he placed the carved log next to the chair and then sat down.

This place was much better than the Dungeon he had been born in. It was larger than the tunnels of the Dungeon. The air felt fresh, clearer than the Dungeons polluted air that was filled with dust and dead skin. This place didn't even have a roof, just blue going on forever. He definitely liked this place.

He opened up his status to check out his new skills.

(Description: The more you get hit, the less damage you recieve.)

(Description:The more you hit, the more damage you do)

(Description: You are able to use Daggers more effectively)

(Description: You are able to use Swords more effectively)

The last two were expected. He had been using Daggers and Swords during the fight and he had actually caused quite a lot of damage with them, so he was bound to get the skills sooner or later.

The first two were what really caught his eye. He probably got those from punching and getting punched a lot. He was really good at both and apparently the system wanted to encourage him more by giving him these skills. He wasn't gonna complain, he was bound to experience a lot of punching and getting punched anyways, so these skills actually helped him a lot.

They were both really useful. would help reduce a lot of the damage taken by him, while would help him punish those who would ever try and have a go at him. For now he would rest for a bit and apply his attribute points.

"Yes."

[All available attributes assigned. Required level to evolve met. You can now choose whether to Evolve immediately or not. Do you wish to Evolve? Yes/No]

That was something quite interesting. He had never expected there to be further evolutions, let alone so soon. During his time in the dungeon with Jenny she had explained to him that certain creatures could evolve, and that there was more than one evolution. When he asked about what he could evolve to next she simply shrugged, saying that she had never seen a Muscular skeleton evolution like his before. He had expected that it would either take a while for his next evolution of he wouldn't evolve at all, so why did it come so quickly? He tried to find an answer while looking through his status when he finally found something.

[Achievement: (Dungeon Escapee)]

(Description: 1.5x Xp gained from slaying a Dungeon monster)

He hadnt realised up until now that this was a very powerful achievement. Would he have survived if he hadn't received this achievement? Would his level have been too low to defeat the Bogghart? For once he was thankful that he was born a Dungeon Monster which allowed him to gain this perk. He didn't want to Evolve now as that would leave Jenny defenceless.

"No"

After he rested for around two hours he had remembered that Jenny hadn't eaten any food for a long time. He checked for on her belt and found that her food pouch was there but when he opened it there was no food inside. That means he had to do some hunting. How could he get food and leave Jenny by herself? He couldn't bring her with him as he would most likely be using Stealth as his leg was bruised and bringing Jenny would cause a lot of sound.

He looked for a place where he could hide her and decided he was going to put her on a tree. After all looked like this small feathery creatures were always on there, which was an indication that where they were was a safe place as they hadn't been killed. He was going to try and climb the tree by himself first. He didn't want his lack of experience to cause him to slip up and possibly injure Jenny even more than she was. He began climbing the tree above them and fell after taking the first two steps. He tried again and fell at the same time. This continued until he finally managed to find the best way to climb the tree. He needed to find footholds for which he could easily out his feet and legs on so that he wouldn't slip on the tree. After successfully climbing a few more times and cementing step by step how to do it in his mind, he tied Jenny to his back again and began climbing. It was significantly harder than climbing by himself but thanks to his upgraded strength he managed to pull it off. He placed Jenny and the chair on the most stable branch he could find and then tied both to the branch and trunk as tight as possible, strong enough to hold her there but not strong enough to do any damage to her. After he made sure she was in a secure position he slowly climbed back down the tree. He could have just jumped off but he still had a bruised leg so he would rather not.

He left towards the river, hoping to find any animals that were drinking water from it. Once he reached the river, he saw a few animals that were drinking from the river. The small white fluffy thing was there, as well as larger brown animals with no fur and skinny legs. He couldn't bring himself to kill the small white fluffy thing, so he decided to go for the larger one. He activated Stealth and began creeping up to the creature.

Stealth was a really useful skill. He had used it quite a lot in the Dungeon which leveled it up to . Now it was helping him with sneaking up on something he was about to hunt. He was now 1 meter away from the thing and it still hadn't detected him. He got close enough to it's neck so he grabbed it and then stuck one of its daggers in the neck.

[You have Slain Deer level 1]

The "Deer" bled out quickly and once it was done, Mennok picked it's body up and slung it over his left shoulder. He hurried quickly to where Jenny was and found that she was safe. He decided to keep her there for now and bring up the food to her, but first he needed to prepare it.

At one point where both Jenny and Mennok had stopped and were resting, he noticed that she was putting something in her mouth and it turned out that she was eating cheese. She told him what food was and what it did, how it gave you things called "nutrients" which helped your body grow and stay healthy and that lots of food was tasty. She also couldn't stop talking about how she really wanted to eat some meat which was something red found in animals and that cooking it over a fire was the best way to eat it.

So now he had to create a fire, but how to do that? He had seen that the Imp campfire had wood inside it so maybe that's how he made it? He gathered a bunch of logs and sticks and placed them on the ground, but nothing happened. Maybe he had to wait for it to happen so that's what he did. After waiting for 5 minutes he was getting annoyed. How long would it take? At the 10 minute marker his eye began to twitch, something he did when he was angry and hadn't noticed until Jenny had told him. At the 20 minute marker he got so mad he struck his sword on a rock which created a spark that landed on the wood and a small fire had started.

Success! He had finally lit a fire and it was totally intentional too! The fire began to slowly die out, so out of panic he threw in more logs which instead just turned the fire off.

"GAAAAAHHHHHH!"

He decided to try again and began hitting his sword against a nearby rock. After a few hits another spark landed into the twigs and the fire relit. He noticed that the smaller twigs burned better than the larger logs, so he put them around the twigs in a circular shape and added more twigs. This time the fire increased and didn't go out, meaning that it had worked. He brought the tip of his sword to eye level, closely inspecting it to find a small dent. He would have to keep fires to a minimum as to not damage his sword to the point where it was useless.

He removed the skin off the carcass, and then found the red thing inside. He cut out a few large pieces and then threw them into the fire. After waiting for a while he tried to pick them up but they were burning hot. He grabbed an unburned stick and tried to impale the now turned black red pieces but they just broke down. That looked unsafe. This time he wouldn't just throw it over the fire. He cut out more pieces and then impaled them on the stick and then placed the stick above the fire. After a bit he pulled them back and could hear them sizzling and were accompanied with a nice aroma. That had to be good. He cooked a few more large pieces and climbed up the tree. He slowly put them in her mouth but they weren't going down. He tried pushing them down but they were too big. Her breathing weakened so he took them out quickly and waited until her breathing came back to normal. What he didn't know is that he had almost killed her by making her choke on food.

He used one of his daggers to cut the large pieces into smaller pieces and then put them in her mouth, sliding down her throat easily this time. He fed her more until he felt like was enough and then he went down and turned off the fire. Hopefully he had given her enough. He went back up to the tree and sat next to Jenny, keeping watch.
