Chapter 9 - The chamber of flame

After that, the man pointed a direction and Alexander walked away from there with his head hunched over, 'that person's was annoying'. At this point he realised that the original big group had been separated into multiple smaller groups, each one had an adult in it.

He walked towards the group he had been lead to and stood there. His group was comprised of more or less 50 people. He stood in the outskirts of the group and waited for further instructions.

He heard a ruckus behind him and looked towards it. There was a boy there, the same height as Alexander but he was blond. He had green eyes and was wearing some sort of robe, it had multiple complex patterns on it, he also had shoes that looked white and fancy. Except for one part, the top part of his left shoe had been dirtied. It was barely a small smudge of dirt but it made him go ballistic. There was a rather small girl standing in front of him, she was hunched over and looked rather shy.

"Fucking peasant, do you want to be beheaded huh?" he screamed at her

"Sorry"

"What do you mean sorry, sorry won't clean these shoes, do you know the worth of these shoes? Of course, you don't you fucking peasant, they are worth more than you, worth more than your family check your entire family line"

"I really am sorry" she whimpered

"If you really are sorry get down on your knees and lick them clean"

A small sly smile crept upon his face, but when he realised that she was not about to do that his smile vanished and his eyes widened, his mouth gaped open and his face turned.

"You fucking bitch" he screamed.

He raised his hand ready to hit her, however before his hand connected with the girl the teacher had stepped in. The hand that had originally been aimed towards the girl had been stopped, in mid-air by seemingly nothing. His hand shook as if he was still pushing but eventually, he relinquished his efforts, it must have been magic of some sort.

"Do not do that again"

The boy took a step back and decided looked away, he was saying that it was all a waste of his time. However, it was quite obvious that he was still mad, judging from his eyes and his still red face.

As the commotion had ended the last person had gone through the small building and been told where to go. Then the same lady from before came and silenced everyone. She then went to the right-most group and made the groups all organize into a line. Then they started moving towards another spot.

Alexander was getting tired and he could imagine that other people had gotten tired as well, this was all intriguing but he had gotten sick of walking.

The group had made their way out into the forest, they travelled towards a seemingly random spot. Eventually, they had found themselves in front of a large cave opening. This had reminded Alexander of the gate to the city but it was slightly larger.

Alexander felt a bit anxious, the could be anything hiding in the darkness provided by the cave. Snakes, bears, beasts, monsters or even dragons anything, and he really did not want to find out. If it was up to him he would still travel into the cave, after all it was an adventure worth having but maybe he would do some scouting first.

Nevertheless, the lady leading the group marched straight into the cave as if there was nothing there. A mage standing beside her then cast a spell. Soon there were multiple wisps of light dancing around them illuminating the entire cave. It made everything a lot easier to handle.

They kept walking further into the cave when the cave split into two paths, at this point the small groups who had been walking in the same line separated. The group Alexander was in went towards the left path.

The cave split like this repeatedly but it never felt cramped in. Even though it split so many times the cave kept its large, spacious size. Eventually, only Alexanders original group of 50 people remained, and at that point, Alexander wished that the one teacher with them knew what he was doing because Alexander really did not want to die lost in a cave. 'What a dumb way to die' Alexander thought to himself.

They kept on moving further into the cave and the route seemingly became more and more complex. Alexander thought about how the teacher was so confident about what path they should take. However, soon the path when from ragged stone to a more fine-tuned stone and eventually to chiselled stone. Clearly they had been travelling down an official path.

Then the spacious cave they had been travelling in entered into a gigantic larger space. This did not resemble the normal cave structure, instead, it looked magical. Space was shaped as if it were a gigantic cylinder. The path they were on continue onto the middle but the ground under the path had seemingly disappeared into the abyss. At the middle of the cave rested a crystal shining red.

Even though they were deep into the cave the air around them felt fresh if not alive. It smelled of space, the type of smell generated in a large empty room. The same suffocating feeling Alexander had felt before was present in this space, this time however it was a lot lighter.

The teacher who had been moving confidently had stopped. He looked towards the group of teenagers and told them.

"Listen closely as I will not repeat myself, soon one of the most important parts in your potential magical futures is going to happen. You will be choosing your spirit" The group of teenagers seemed excited but Alexander was oblivious to what was happening.

"If you look around you might notice that there is a bottomless void in the room and trust me, you don't want to fall down this void as doing so will certify your death"

"So let's act patiently and cautiously for the safety of all of us, or at least you. In other words, from here onwards I do not want to hear another word. Now I want one of you to walk with me to the crystal to choose your spirit. Who wants to go first?"

The silent group suddenly turned into a cacophony of sound, everyone seemed extremely excited over this prospect.

"One further thing, if you fail to choose a spirit you will be exiled from this school and will have to choose another sect next year if you want to continue down this path"

Suddenly the noise the group had been emitting turned silent, nobody apparently wanted to do the test anymore. That's when Alexander raised his voice.

"I'll go first"
