Chapter 75 - Moving Like an Assassin

Delphine grabs Simon's wrist and starts running back towards the palace with him running with her in the night. Instead of running down in front of a whole army of warriors waiting for the demons to fight them, Delphine held Simon and jumped on the top of the buildings and houses. The way Delphine sprinted was about as fast as an assassin looking for the person they were hired to assassinate. She ran with Simon back to the palace to find Eivor and make him talk out loud to her face. She wanted to know why he made an excuse to the demon leader about her not being in the city and why leave his men to die in battle.

Simon already had the thought that the earl would do something against them and shun them out from Bebbanburg. Osbert did not turn around to see where the two demon hunters went, but he kept firing his arrows upon the night creatures. The nordic arrows seemed to be working on the demonic beasts since Delphine explained that they could penetrate even the most durable steel. Then, Delphine saw there were only two guards next to the entrance; she noticed them looking straight forward. She then sees a window being opened and instantly knew it to be the room in the same hallway as the earl's bedroom.

The window is big enough for Delphine and Simon to fit inside, and nobody was inside the room. Thankfully, it gave them enough time to find Eivor and question before many more men suffer the same fate as their allies.

"Simon, I need you to hold onto me. We're both going to jump to that window and find the earl," Delphine said.

"That one window? Are you serious?" Simon asked.

"We have no other choice. We can't let the guards catch us. You and I don't have time to answer questions from those people," she said.

"Do you think they turned their backs on us? I mean, it sure seems that way. But is that something you believe?"

"If they did that, we wouldn't even be here. We would already be gone and be somewhere else instead of rot in their prison."

"Very well. I hope I'm not too heavy."

Simon was obviously not a fat person, but he has been eating and drinking a lot lately as he was with her. Delphine was determined if she can carry a double-edged sword, she can carry a man unless he is not fat. Then, Simon gets behind her and puts his hands on her shoulders, and he gets onto her back and holds on for dear life. Delphine has both of her hands holding his legs; she stumbles a little while having him be on top of her body and lets him watch the window from where he stands.

"This doesn't feel right. Shouldn't I be on the ground and you on top?" Simon asked.

"I have no other choice. There is the window right over there, and all I have to do is jump over there. Of course, you could just stay here and let me handle it from here," Delphine said.

"Wait. Do you know what we can do? How about I get down from you, I run towards the window, and you get ready to catch me," he said. Delphine started to believe this all makes sense because Simon wanted it to be much easier for her.

There was no way two people at the same time would fit through such a little hole of a window.

"Alright, then. I'll do it your way," Delphine said. She then has Simon get off of her and stretch out his hands to get ready to be caught.

Delphine looks at the window once again to see if she can get to it from where she stood. The building she and Simon were on was almost about the same size as the palace. Delphine and Simon were both from faraway lands and since they were both demon hunters and full of talent by roaming around the world. Then, Delphine dashes towards the building and jumps high in the air until she reaches the edge of the window. She then climbs into the palace and turns around and saw Simon getting ready to jump.

"Simon, come here. I'll catch you!" Delphine said. She knew that Simon had some strength and courage inside him, so there was no reason for him not to try and be caught by her.

And so, Simon sprints towards the building and jumps very high, and he makes sure no guard or warrior sees him jumping in the air. Then, Simon saw Delphine's hand reaching out to him; he knew by getting caught, he will be able to make it inside the building. He took hold of Delphine's hand and continued to hold onto it as she tries pulling him up. It took her a long while to pull him up towards her level, and she would not abandon him to the demons. Against their own free will, they left Osbert and his men to fight back any night creature who would try to overtake the city.

A few seconds later, Delphine and Simon decide to leave the little room and look for the earl's bedroom. Meanwhile, Eivor was in his bedroom with his wife and felt terrible for making Delphine be trapped in either leaving or staying in the city's shadows. The darkness itself was around the inside of the palace as the two demon hunters were searching far and wide for Eivor. He was standing near his window and looking up to the moon with his sword in his hand. There were only a few instances where he would have pitied himself for putting courage in the hearts of his warriors.

"You seem troubled, Eivor. What's wrong?" Katherine asked.

"The Ebony Knight and... the young hunter. I... I am a fool. I've let darkness shroud my mind," Eivor answered.

"They're simply demon hunters, my love. You know none of their kind is welcomed here. They know better than intrude in this city and make the hearts of men change," she said.

"No. I believe they're doing this for a much better reason. There comes a time when I must put my trust in those I've only just started to know. I cannot turn away from that promise. And tonight... I think I have."

"What's the problem with that? Those hunters of the night are not like us. They do not believe in our gods. They take no such order from a man such as you. A man of your strength can easily defeat that woman and her man. Those two are weak, no matter what the stories say about them. All I hear from them are lies and contempt against our city."

Eivor wanted to believe the words of his wife, but he knew Delphine already proved her strength to him by trying to take her sword. He was told loud and clear that the news of the Ebony Knight was accurate because they witnessed her power before their eyes. The creatures of the night could not take hold of Delphine because she always fought back against them. Eivor looked down at himself and became displeased because his wife was wrong about the demon hunters being useless and weak. He has never met any other person such as Delphine, and he would make sure her name is always talked about in taverns and tales.

"What do you think I should do? I can't stay here forever. I can't keep doubting myself for the rest of my life," Eivor said.

"That may be true. But, for the protection of this city and this palace, you must do the right thing. Either keep the two demon hunters out of Bebbanburg or have them killed," Katherine said.

"I can't kill them. They'll have to kill me if I do the deed. If I kill them, I will be cursed to live with that," he said. Then, Katherine gets up from her bed and walks towards her husband to cheer him up before he walks someplace else.

Then, she said to him, "If you're cursed, then I will be the one to break it. I will kick out anyone who stands against our laws and make them pay for placing this burden upon you. Even if you must live with such torment, your brother will carry your name and let it be known for all eternity. If the Ebony Knight and the young hunter set one foot in this kingdom again, I will have their heads and make them be shown as warning to all who stand against us."

Eivor still wanted to believe Katherine, but his emotions and strength held him back from putting his trust in her. A few seconds later, Delphine and Simon open the door of their bedroom and saw the earl and his wife standing together.
