Chapter 76 - An Unlikely Confrontation

The two demon hunters were getting a bit exhausted from opening a bunch of doors to find the earl's bedroom. They both saw his wife being with him to offer him comfort before the Ebony Knight catches them. Delphine was more than tempted to put her sword into the heart of Eivor and relieve the city of this nightmare. Simon had some understanding of why she needed to hunt down the person who was supposed to be defending the town with his life. Kathrine walked up to them and was conflicted about putting a dagger into one of their hearts.

"What is this? Why are the most talked about demon hunters intruding on us?" She asked.

"We didn't come to you. We only came for Eivor. Instead of helping out his men, he hides from the demons like the scared rat he is," Delphine answered.

"You will hang for this intrusion. The entire city of Bebbanburg will hear of..." Kathrine said. But before she could say anything else, Delphine pushes her aside, and Simon had his sword in front of Kathrine's throat.

Laying hands on an earl and his wife meant instant death for those who take anything too far. Delphine was given no choice but to do what anyone should have done instead of being left to rot by the night creatures. Delphine pulled out her greatsword and held onto it as she is slowly walking towards Eivor as the night continued. The earl backs away from her until his back hits the brick wall, and he was left without a chance to defend himself. He saw the hatred and contempt in the eyes of the Ebony Knight as she proceeded to walk to him.

"Delphine, please. Think about your next move. I was afraid. I didn't have a choice. That demon in black armor wouldn't give me a second chance," Eivor said. Delphine had all sorts of fury on her face as she was about to do something no man would ever do to their ruler.

Then Eivor spoke with her, saying, "Just find it in your heart to forgive me. I promise to my people and all of my gods that you shall be rewarded greatly. I am not afraid to give you such a massive promise. I swear to you, my people will tell their children your name in stories. Bards and musicians shall be paid to write songs of how you saved a city under a dire threat. Please... just think about what you're doing."

It seemed as if Delphine did not listen to a single thing the earl said to her as she strolled towards him. Kathrine was both angry and sad at the same time because she thought her husband would die by the hands of a Saxon. If he were to die, he needed his weapon by his side to be welcomed by Odin into Valhalla. Then, Delphine stood in front of Eivor with her greatsword in her hand, and her other hand would be used for something else instead of holding her sword.

"If you touch a single hair on his head, I'll kill you myself. I don't give a damn what my husband thinks of you. I'll have your head!" Kathrine shouted. Simon continued to hold onto the earl's wife and have his sword ready to slit her throat.

Delphine thought of something to do with Eivor and thought of how to make him feel what she is feeling. Without hesitation, she grabs him by the throat and begins choking him with one hand as his wife is forced to watch. Kathrine and Simon were surprised by Delphine's actions as she had Eivor pinned to the wall. Delphine held onto her blade with one hand and the earl's throat on her other side, and he had so much difficulty breathing.

"I could send you to Valhalla now. I could go ahead and end your suffering. I can give you a quick death or a more painful, gruesome end to your worthless life," Delphine said. Then, she uses her greatsword and stabs the wall next to the earl's right ear and makes the sword run from the inside of the palace to the outside.

It was evident that Delphine's sword can cut down the mightiest of any armor and can run through a building made of bricks and stones. Then, she keeps the sword onto the wall and places her other hand on the earl's cheek. Eivor was forced to watch everything that the Ebony Knight is going to do to him as his wife watches on. Delphine forced him to look her in the eyes and made him afraid of her for the rest of his life.

Then she said to him, "Unfortunately, by killing you, that makes me more of a monster than the demon leader who is leading his entire legion outside. You were there when it all took place. You were standing in front of them and made up some pious lie about me. You just had to go out your way and make the situation worse than ever. I trusted you and gave you everything I had, yet in the end, you and your men turned against me. You would bring down the gravest of all downfalls upon my friend and me."

"It was not intentional. Even if they saw you, they would still lay waste to my city and people," Eivor said.

"Most of them would've already been alive right now. If they want me, I have no choice but to go up to them. It is a price I shall gladly pay," Delphine said.

"If you did exactly that, maybe they might live, and maybe they might not. I do not recall accepting such high offers in the first place. This city would most likely be in the hands of the demon in black armor. That is not happening on my watch."

"Well-spoken, it is something you must keep doing to keep this city running. You know there are hundreds of men out there giving their lives to protect this city. You know the demons will stop at nothing to make sure this place is in their hands. They will win if you stay by their side. Fight for this kingdom, or I will find you and hunt you down."

Then, Delphine released Eivor from his grasp and made him come back to his senses as the midnight bell began to ring. She then pulls her greatsword from the wall and puts it back into her scabbard as Simon watches on. Eivor had his hands on the ground and remained silent for a long while as Delphine was starting to leave his bedroom.

"Simon, let her go," Delphine said. He releases Katherine from his grasp, and he watches as she gasps for breath and struggles to get back up.

Katherine looks at the two of them and looks at the blade, which almost ended her husband's life as Delphine and Simon were strolling out of the room.

"Who are you? What are you but a false savior and a filthy pagan who walks in the darkness?" Katherine asked. Delphine slowly turns her head towards the earl's wife and kept her dark eyes upon her.

She was more than determined to make her end up being shamed and let all of Bebbanburg know her failure.

Then, Delphine answered and replied, "I am the end to the demon race. And I am the usurper of demon kings. The river shall run red with their blood. I will not rest until they are all cast away from the earth. I don't seek to bring ruin to human lives, only the hordes of Hell. For I am the judge... and the executioner."

Delphine said nothing more to Eivor and Katherine and knew her time had been wasted by dealing with them. She walks out of their bedroom as Simon takes one last look at them before it seems as if he will never see them again. Then, he follows Delphine outside of the palace as there were no guards around to stop them from going any further. Perhaps they were all outside with the nordic warriors fighting against the night creatures under the midnight moon. Meanwhile, Eivor crawls to his wife and wraps his arms around her to comfort her of everything that just happened.

"What are you gonna do?" Katherine asked.

"I must go back. I must fight them all. I must do what my ancestors would have done. For I have shamed them," Eivor said. Meanwhile, Delphine and Simon watch as it appears that the night creatures have broken down the doors.

Then, they both run as fast as possible towards the entrance of the city and watch as most of the warriors were already dead. From a considerable distance, Delphine saw Gorath mercilessly killing any human who stood in his way as he searched far and wide for the Ebony Knight.
