About a few minutes later, the sun has come down, and the moon has appeared in the night sky. The people of Bebbanburg have returned to their homes and locked every door so that nobody comes in to intrude. Every place that resembled drinking and eating had their candles blown out and made everyone inside go back home. Then, Delphine saw a whole pack of demons coming from the shadows and walking as fast as they can towards the nordic city. She saw that there were not a hundred demons coming to the town; it was more than a thousand-night creatures walking with their swords, axes, and spears.
Every nordic blade has been sharpened from head to toe, and every man on the walls was ready to sing their swords into the bodies of the creatures. There were also men with swords and shields waiting behind the doors waiting for them to come. They were willing to fight the demonic beasts to the death until the sun rises. Delphine and Simon had their weapons ready and prepared to fight back against whoever dared to swing their arm against them. Delphine expects the onslaught to be over in about two hours, but she did not exceed her expectations as she waited for the demons to come to her.
It was at that moment when Osbert and Eivor saw the demons coming closer towards them, and the horde of demons was more than they could imagine. It did not seem right to have a thousand beasts marching towards the city in the night. There was only one leader of the night creatures who wore a hood and dressed entirely in black armor. His name is Gorath, and he led this entire legion of demons into battle and wielded a sizeable black greatsword. The men who were staring at the brigade coming forth were full of agony and fear; they all felt shivers run down their spine.
Gorath walked towards the city doors and stood about twenty feet away from it as he wanted to take a look at the earl. His dark face, with many scars, resembled what a human face looks like, and he was not afraid to march further into the city.
"Well, well. I thought you might be bigger. But you're the one. You have come so far in your reign and fought so mighty and high against us," Gorath said.
"What do you want?" Eivor asked.
"Oh. You already know the answer to that."
"We don't know what you seek. But whatever you're seeking, we don't have it. You should move on."
But, Gorath would not do such a thing and would not walk away after walking so much to get to Bebbanburg. He was a different kind of demon leader and a far more sinister creature than anyone who stood behind him. Gorath dominated all of these demons and made every single one serve him and told them to fight in his name. He is different from all of the demons Delphine has faced in the past; he never backed down from any duel he finds himself in. He showed no mercy for his enemies and never showed fear towards those who wish to cut him down.
Then, Gorath said to Eivor, "I'm pretty sure you do have something... or someone. Don't tell me you won't have the guts to make that person come before me. I know you have the one who wields the massive sword with hellish flames. You cannot hide this person from me forever, earl of Bebbanburg. I'm certain you know the person I'm looking for... the Ebony Knight. You will bring her down to me, and you will fall on your knees and surrender your city to the demon king, Mephiles!"
Delphine heard the words of Gorath and held onto the handle of her greatsword as he was about to spout more nonsense. When she heard the name of the Demon Wolf, she began to feel just as much anger as she did with her fight against the cathedral night creature. Simon only heard of the name just a few times when he was with Delphine and saw she had so much tension in herself. Then, Gorath stood there and waited for Eivor's response; the demons were more than ready to fight the humans and become victorious.
"There are taking us for fools. Nothing but a ruse," Osbert whispered. Then, Eivor heard the whispers of Osbert and had no choice but to give his response to the demon knight.
He knew he could not keep the night creatures waiting for eternity, and he had to think of something to make up and say to Gorath.
"We do not have whoever it is you're looking for. I have not forgotten any of your words, but you will never find the Ebony Knight in this city. She left the city a few days ago and is well on her journey," Eivor said. He told Gorath this to keep Delphine in secret and not hand her over so quickly to the demons.
He would not allow her to be in harm's way and not give her up towards those who would lay their hands on her. Delphine was shocked by hearing this by Eivor, but he had his reasons as did she against her enemies. Simon also could not find a clue as to why Eivor would make up a lie to save Delphine's life instead of letting her be tortured. Then, Gorath thought of a solution about what he will do against the city; he would have to find Delphine and take her by force.
He turns over to one of the archers with a bunch of arrows, and he orders all of the demons who are archers to stick to his plan.
"Burn it down!" Gorath shouted. And so, every demon with a bow takes hold of many arrows and begins releasing it onto the city walls.
Then, the demons were getting ready for not only a battle against the humans but they were getting ready to bring the entire city down. Every man got ready to fight against the demons; they were prepared to defend their homes and their city.
"Earl of Bebbanburg. Are you ready for death?" Gorath asked.
"If you're ready to taste your blood, then we are ready for death!" Eivor said.
"Good. Well-spoken. I'll let you know now that we will find this Ebony Knight. She is known for the deaths of thousands of us. We will have our vengeance on her, even if I have to tear down this city piece by piece!"
Eivor and his men were already prepared for the long night, and there was no turning back. Every man had his sword and shield by their sides, and they were all ready for the demons to come and take them on. The demons with bows were already firing their arrows on the walls; some of them landed perfectly, but the metal on the walls deflected most of the arrows. The other night creatures were preparing to break down the doors by using a battering ram. Nobody used such a siege engine in a long time, and they did not expect the beasts actually to roam into the city and kill anyone in sight.
Delphine hides her face from the demons, and when Simon tries to launch his arrows upon them, Delphine pulled him back. Eivor pretty much set her up and unleashed the power of the demons upon them and gave his enemies a much more significant advantage.
"What do we do now? Why did you pull me away?" Simon asked.
"There's an even bigger problem around here. We need to find Eivor. He and I have business," Delphine answered.
"Wasn't he just right there a few minutes ago? How did he get away so fast?" He asked.
"He must be one of those people who have enough skill to jump through building to building to get somewhere as quick as he can."
"So... like an assassin? You know, one of those people who take a big leap of faith off a large building and land on a pile of hay and leaves?"
"Uh, yeah. Something like that. We need to get out of here."
"And leave these men to fight them alone? I thought it was not in your nature to run away from demons."
"Before the nordic swords and arrows were crafted, they were infused with enough salt and ice to penetrate any type of armor. They found a way to mix those ingredients into the weapons and test them out to see if they're good enough to use. I say they did an admirable job at making those weapons be taken in battle. Also, your sword and mine are the same strength and durability as the nordic weapons, which means they might be able to take down a quarter of that entire legion by themselves. Now let's go. Eivor has probably already ventured back into the palace."
