Simon could not hold back his past forever from the one person he chose to follow. He followed the Ebony Knight since the very beginning because he wanted to be attached to someone and show that person that life matters. Delphine knew this because she was growing a loving relationship with him since he had the perfect opportunity to tell her everything. Both of them had tragic pasts and their reasons for fighting the night creatures; they both despised the demons in every way. Simon knew her ever since she went to Eastmarch to lift the curse and defeat the demon leader by herself.
Simon wanted Delphine to continue this friendship with him, and he never wanted her to be clueless about everything. Unlike her, he went straight to the point of what he wanted to say and did not make himself confused. He did not care if the nordic men bust inside of their room, and it did not matter to him if they try to kick him out. If he does not tell her now, he might never get the time to explain his life story with her. Without hesitation, Simon decides to go straight to the point and not miss out on other essential things.
Then Simon proceeded to speak to Delphine, saying, "There's a reason why I'm usually a quick shot when it comes to using the sword and firing my bow at certain animals. There was also a time when I would usually go and hunt the wildest of animals and beasts. I am not so restrained by fighting to the death against my enemies. I have never taken a break from such a heavy burden too much to carry for a whole bunch of people. My reason for fighting is to avenge my fallen people who gave their lives to save mine. I only dream of starting a new life elsewhere with a good friend by my side."
Simon had nothing more to say to her as the evening begins to come for them. There have been a lot of days that seem to go very fast for them, but they never had the perfect opportunity to make themselves come together and talk about their lives. Delphine felt as much pity for Simon as he felt the same shame as her after hearing him out. Suddenly, Delphine started to hear the sound of men increasing rapidly and making noises to be ready for the onslaught. She then gets up from the bed and looks at the appearance of many men and noble warriors who were already prepared to fight.
"What's wrong?" Simon asked.
"It seems they are prepared, yet they probably don't know when the demons will come," Delphine answered.
"And what do you suppose we do? Quite frankly, we can't waste any more time being inside," he said.
"True. We may have to get out there and be with them. If we don't help them out against the demons, their sacrifices will be in vain. We'll need to let them know the faster and stronger way of killing demons."
"Indeed. After this onslaught, I'm afraid our time in Bebbanburg will be over. There won't be another time for us to come together in this room. We might have another drink downstairs, but after that, we have to get ready to leave this place behind and fight back those creatures. Now, are you ready to face them like always?"
"Face them? I'm ready to finish them!"
Delphine nods her head to Simon, and they both started getting ready to stand before Osbert and his men. But before they could do any of that, they walked into the tavern and had their dinner as the evening was hastening on. The knights had some sort of an early dinner before waiting for the sun to go down. The nordic warriors never went into battle with an empty stomach; they needed to fight back against the enemy with enough strength as they could have. Delphine and Simon sat down beside the front doors so that it can be much easier for them to leave the tavern.
They were inside the place, and both of them drink whatever flavored wine they desired. They drink the wine until their chalices were empty and until they could stop asking for a refill. Delphine began to think of the first time she had her first wine, and she became very drunk that night. All she could remember was her falling face-first onto the table and finding herself in a forest without her belongings. It was not the most pleasant experience she has ever endured, but she has been through much worse than being embarrassed.
A few minutes later, Delphine and Simon walked out of the tavern as some of the people were talking about her amongst themselves. From a considerable distance, they saw Osbert standing in front of his men and instructing them to never surrender to the night creatures. The man was pretty much the person who leads his men into battle by order of the earl. Delphine and Simon wasted no time and walked towards them while shoving a few people away from them. They walk up the stairs leading to the floor of the walls and the two front doors.
"Ah, Delphine. Fancy meeting you here. Do you mind standing with us and waiting for the demons to show their ugly faces?" Osbert asked.
"The time for mindless chatting has passed. I see you stand ready, but swords and arrows won't fully kill demons," Delphine answered.
"What are you saying, Delphine? Even if they do try to kill a few of us, I say we have the upper hand against them," he said.
"You may be right, but even if you land a thousand scratches and give a hundred scars to the night creatures, they will still come and rip you apart. You might be the first in line of defeating the demons, but you will most definitely be one of the first to die."
"I'm certain we have faced demons before. We may have lost a great number of men, but we still lived on to get stronger."
Delphine started to lose a little bit of patience with Osbert as he showed a bunch of pride before her eyes. He was quite honest in himself that despite their massive steel, they will be victorious against the night creatures. Nordic steel may be better than regular steel, but it is not the only thing that will put down a demon for good. Some of the men started to speak to themselves about Delphine and Simon; they highly doubted the fact they would have to put their trust in two demon hunters. They've never met them before and wondered why they must trust two outsiders who walk alone in the night.
"What are you saying, lady? That you've achieved all this? That you're the chosen one? The one sent by the gods?" One of them asked.
"I was not sent by anyone. I do what I must, even if I have done it myself," Delphine said.
"Are you truly willing to die for those you've never met before?" Another man asked.
"I don't need to know any of you. I do what I do because there is no choice," she said. They were starting to doubt her and forsake her as she stood before them, and she was not afraid to take them all on.
"I take it these people seem to not be on your side. Though I agree with what you say, these people may rise against you one day," Osbert said.
"I don't care if they are against me. I saved them all from tyranny and darkness against the demons. If the world chooses to become my enemy, so be it," Delphine said. Simon was stunned by her words and did not expect such terms to come out from her.
Then, Eivor walks up to the big crowd of men who were with Delphine, Simon, and Osbert. He sees a significant dispute among them and lots of disagreement between the men and the Ebony Knight.
"Osbert. I thought I told you to keep these men prepared for a battle against the creatures. What's this nonsense I hear?" Eivor asked.
Then, one of them went up to the earl and said, "This knight who came into this city... she knows nothing. This is an outrage to put our trust in such a person."
"I'm saying you must accept my offer to keep you alive against those beasts," Delphine said.
"You do not speak for us, wench. We never wanted your kind here, filthy Saxon. You think you're so high and mighty?" A Viking asked. Then, Delphine pulls out her greatsword and shows it to all of the warriors who were standing before her.
They were all immensely shocked by how long and powerful the blade is, and they felt their bodies shaking as they took a good look at the sword.
