tl/n: some things to note

(already fixed in prev chapters)

마수: demon beast -> magic beast

i'm putting the linoceron from the tutorial as a "magic beast," not a "demon beast"

호족: Noble -> Tiger Clan

has only been used thus far twice, once on the white tiger's status screen and the second time on the yellow tigers. i blame hanja for this one.

in the previous chapter, the scene where euishin meets "lee lena" was accidentally omitted . it was fixed quickly thanks to a commenter.

i apologize for any inconveniences these changes may have caused

4. Player's Vestige (3)

Yeom Joonyeol's basic combat skill was the power to manipulate flames.

'Remote Ignition' was a skill that evolved from that thanks to Yeom Joonyeol interpreting his flame techniques as a magnetic flow.

As the name suggested, 'Remote Ignition' could remotely ignite latent embers created by his ability.

It was a skill perfect to place in the hands of those who enjoyed looking at those Silver Coins.

'During those annoying greetings, I planted latent embers.'

A small latent ember was enough to heat up each of the coin-sized chunks of pure silver in the party hall.

"Uwaaak!"

"Ah, aaah! My hand, my hand!"

Screams rang out everywhere.

The crow and seal of Sidelentium were branded like a stigma onto the greedy palms of those holding the coins.

The highest class individuals among humans all suffered from burns.

Those in tuxedos and dresses tasted pain.

They forgot their dignity and began to cry, rolling distastefully on the floor.

"Hey, ambulance, call an ambulance!"

"It hurts… ah, agh."

"Hey, hand, my hand!"

But now, the entire building's communications had been blocked.

All they could do was moan in pain and wildly run around.

'Why not just let go of it?'

Even in the midst of this, they were still holding onto their Pure Silver Coins, choosing to wrap them in handkerchiefs or clothes.

The SR+++ item only had the ability to close mouths.

"Little Red Dragon, Yeom Joonyeol! Come on and fix this, isn't it your doing?!"

Of course it was.

'There is no one other than me who can do this.'

Currently, my Remote Ignition skill was at level 10.

Finding latent embers was only possible with a level 10 or higher detection skill.

A player with a skill at level 10 would have no reason to participate in such a shady party, and even less reason to enter as a security guard.

The only one who could fool the eyes of the Fantasy Auction participants was me, who had turned into Yeom Joonyeol.

Although, the real Yeom Joonyeol's skill in this world hasn't reached level 10 yet.

"Yes, I did it."

There was no reason to hide it, so I answered honestly.

The guards and players were sweating profusely as they tolerated the pain, but after my words, they stood still.

They hesitated for a while before shouting.

"Hey, you cheeky bastard!"

"Don't even think about living…!"

They took up their weapons and prepared to use their abilities against me, but they dared not attack.

They had strength in numbers, so I'd eventually be suppressed, but the first dozens of people would have to be prepared to burn to death.

The security guards' integrity was at a level where they'd accept a job like this one in the first place. Additionally, the players who participated in the auction were absolutely rotten.

"People will be arriving soon, so think of some excuses."

I blatantly mocked them.

Byun Soonhoe, who had been hesitant, became furious and raised his voice.

"What was that, idiot? No one can come here! Communications have also been cut off. We've already had a conversation with the local police! Even if you call someone, the one hundred security guards here will take you hostage…"

Fwoooshh-

All the velvet curtains covering the windows instantly burst into a blaze at my beckoning.

The fire had only damaged the curtains, and it went out immediately.

But behind the curtainless window, there was a pillar of fire… No, a wall of fire was blazing around the entire building.

"No…!"

While using the Bestowed Light of Red Dragon Summoning, both the range and power of Yeom Joonyeol's Remote Ignition skill increased.

Before I entered the convention center, I looked around the premises and laid out latent embers in a place the guards wouldn't find them.

"People are still awake at the New Year's parties. If you're in an aerial hotel floating around the Han River, you'd see this wall of fire. Now, the number of reports to the fire department alone will exceed three digits."

Byun Soonhoe's face turned pale.

There were probably a lot of fire reports popping up now.

The convention center was covered with a thin, dome-like layer of flames.

'From the outside, it'll look like it's been caught up in a large fire due to the smoke and flames.'

Communication here was completely cut off, so people would think the situation was urgent.

Although, it was urgent in a sense.

"Even if communications in this area are lost, calling for assistance is not a problem."

This world's bad ending could not be stopped by simply knocking down a black curtain.

It was a result of countless malicious actions, desires, misfortunes, mistakes, coincidences, misunderstandings, etc.

'I will not rely solely on Light and skills.'

Even though I had a strong Light like 'Player's Vestige,' it was obvious that there would be a limit to it someday.

Just like in chess, no matter how powerful the queen is, it couldn't win by itself.

I skipped school and researched this world in order to increase the number of pieces I could use.

I could take advantage of things such as worldviews, traditions, and legal systems that were not listed in the game's setting book.

And today, I decided to use one of my findings during that investigation.

'Even in this world, there are fire emergency response stages.'

Major disasters with estimated casualties exceeding the double digits requiring at least eight hours to resolve were treated with a tier two response.

For fast rescue and resolvement of the crisis in a tier two response, the fire department was required to call professional player teams who had already signed contracts with them beforehand.

"More than 400 rescuers will be here in five minutes along with at least two teams of professional players. As a bonus, reporters will come to cover the first fire-related incident of this year."

In response to activating Yeom Joonyeol's Light, a huge red dragon manifested through a gap in space.

Red Dragon, who was spinning around me at a slow speed, put the tip of its nose on my shoulder and let out a breath of fire.

However, with the Dragon King's blessing, 'My fire will not harm you,' my body did not burn, let alone feel the heat.

Wee woo wee woo-

The dozens of ground and aerial fire truck sirens shook the convention center, mingling with the cries of party guests.

"Now, do you understand the situation?"

Even with my provocative remarks, Byun Soonhoe and the security guards were silent.

As I jumped onto the stage, Byun Soonhoe faltered backwards.

"Time for me to get paid for my live dragon show."

One by one, I collected the boxes containing the item cards on the stage.

Fwoosh-

When I melted the box with flames, ownership of the item card was transferred to me.

Byun Soonhoe looked as if he could faint at any moment, but he couldn't approach me as I walked with Red Dragon by my side.

·········.

·········.

·········.

The list of items in the window increased line by line.

With dozens of system beeps, the cards disappeared into my item window.

"Hahahaha!"

I turned around and laughed.

I felt very refreshed after hitting a bad guy on the back.

'Even in the game, I felt really good when I robbed the Fantasy Auction.'

Even in the game's Fantasy Auction event, I investigated the stage so that I could thrust everything into chaos and get the item.

Currently, unlike in the game, it is difficult for me to actively attack otherworlds such as towers, dungeons, castles, and gardens. So, these would be valuable pieces.

"T-Thief!"

"Are you introducing yourself?"

I kindly responded to Byun Soonhoe's nonsense.

Most of the items on auction were item cards related to otherworlds or supernatural abilities.

'There are some things that cannot be converted into cards.'

The treasures that weren't cards were absurd.

Byun Soonhoe had even been stealing and robbing.

"Why are there lost cultural assets that belong to the nation here? I stole a lot already, so I'll just return these."

I confiscated items to throw at the National Museum or the Cultural Heritage Administration later.

Treasures, not in card form, also entered the item window.

Considering that Byun Soonhoe was just angry and didn't think it was odd, he must've thought I was using items or skills to pack things.

He wouldn't be wrong, I had been using my exclusive menu skill.

Byun Soonhoe spoke with a voice seething in anger.

"Do you think the Bear Clan will stand still?"

Of course, I also considered the existence of the Bears.

"Do you think the Bear Clan is quiet right now because they don't know now? They're leaving me alone because I look more interesting."

After parting with Sawol Seeum and returning to the banquet hall, I immediately noticed that I could open a status window.

A True Clansman's status window appeared between the countless 'not registered in the database' beeps.

There was a deep boredom in her eyes.

She didn't seem interested in the upcoming Fantasy Auction.

'I know that attitude. She's simply here to stand back and sell items.'

After seeing her in person, I was sure that I wouldn't have any problem smashing this disgusting auction.

"You're finished."

There was a glimmer of despair in his eyes, so it seemed that he understood what I was saying.

"Uwaahh!"

Byun Soonhoe, who lost his reason, rushed at me.

When he moved, the Red Dragon was ready to turn him into a lump of charcoal.

Bam!

"Hwaaack!"

"Perfect, you pig!"

The female security guard, who got up after releasing her restraints herself, threw a kick at Byun Soonhoe.

It seemed that she'd broken her joints to escape, quietly waiting for a chance to get away with her hands tattered and tied.

Bam bam, bam!

"Aaackk, oomph!"

She silently stomped on Byun Soonhoe's stomach.

Unlike her, Byun Soonhoe continued his pig-like squealing as if impatient for her to finish him.

"I'd rather be a mouse than a filthy pig like you!"

While she was beating Byun Soonhoe, I used Red Dragon to melt the lock on Sawol Seeum's cage.

Clink-

When the door opened, Sawol Seeum threw away his loose shackles and scrambled to Sawol Semin.

Sawol Semin had a face full of blood and bruises, and couldn't even open his eyes in this chaos.

"Uncle…"

Sawol Seeum sat down next to Sawol Semin and carefully raised his back off the floor.

"Uncle… I was wrong… I'm not going to school… Don't die…"

While Sawol Seeum lowered his head and muttered as if he was repenting for something, Sawol Semin slowly opened his eyes.

Even with his hazy consciousness, Sawol Semin met Sawol Seeum's gaze after hearing his voice.

Sawol Semin blinked his eyes as if doubting his own vision before smiling brightly.

"…Seeum, thank god you're safe."

Sawol Semin lightly tapped the Sawol Seeum with his unbroken arm.

At those words, Sawol Seeum smiled with tears in his eyes.

Behind them, the sounds of sirens were getting closer and closer.

'Looks like it's over.'

I got the items, so there is nothing more to do.

Support would come if I waited, but showing myself or Sawol Seeum was a problem.

'No.'

Sawol Seeum was the successor to the king of the final dynasty's liberated messenger.

One day, he'd be revealed to the public.

'You're still too young.'

It was impossible to show a weakened Sawol Seeum to people.

"Let's run away."

Crash!

At my command, Red Dragon broke the window.

I put my finger on the foreheads of Sawol Seeum, Sawol Semin, and the unknown security guard, leaving a bit of my blessing on them so that they wouldn't be caught in Red Dragon's flames.

Granting some of my blessing to others slightly decreased the amount of time my Bestowed Light could be active for. However, I couldn't leave them here and escape alone.

"I shared my blessing for ten minutes. Follow me."

There were about 30 minutes left for me to be able to use my Light to be Yeom Joonyeol.

I needed to hurry.

As I got on Red Dragon, the three of them supported each other and rode alongside me.

I wrapped us all in flames for camouflage and protection before making Red Dragon soar into the night sky.

Fwoosh-!

At the same time, the wall of fire surrounding the convention center was lifted.

From the outside, it'd look like the wall of fire merged together and ascended into the sky.

As we climbed up to the top of the clouds, the moonlight, brighter than ever, leaked through the cracks in the flames.

"Where's your house?"

"Ah, Yeonhui in the Seodaemun District…"

Sawol Seeum answered without hesitation.

It's nice that he wasn't suspicious of me, but was it okay for the heir to the king's messenger to easily reveal his address?

'I roughly know where Yeonhui was in the game.'

Following my guidance, Red Dragon quickly reached the location that Sawol Seeum mentioned.

In the corner of Gungdong Park in Yeonhui was the hidden entrance to a mansion.

"Thank you for saving me! Your name is Yeom Joonyeol?"

"I'm not Yeom Joonyeol."

The real Yeom Joonyeol was currently partying in an aerial hotel with 'Red Lion' and its allies, political figures, and business giants who were all enormous celebrities.

I purposely chose someone who'd have a perfect alibi, no matter how hard the Fantasy Auction crew tried.

And…

'Today's work was also for Yeom Joonyeol.'

There was someone at the Fantasy Auction who had succeeded in entering the National Assembly.

They were the one who ended up causing Yeom Joonyeol's death.

"Please, you guys weren't there and you didn't see anything. You too, security guard. Don't go home for a while and hide yourself here."

"What? But those piglets…!"

"They will be judged by the law. Remaining evidence, rescue workers entering the scene, testimonies from professional players, media coverage, and stigma on their hands. There is a lot of evidence and witnesses. You don't need to come forward."

I had laid the foundation.

In addition to the foundation, I also provoked Byun Soonhoe.

'Byun Soonhoe will quarrel with those who shouldn't be touched.'

The guard, who heard my explanation, nodded with a cool, persuaded face.

Sawol Seeum seemed to have no intention of going out from the beginning. However, having recovered from crying, he looked up at me.

Sawol Semin, barely able to open his eyes, spoke in a fading voice just to say thank you.

"…Well, thank you. Please allow me to repay you someday."

Sawol Seeum said to me as I was about to tell Red Dragon to leave.

Repay.

With today's work, I erased some of the bad ending flags.

In addition to that, the price of the item cards that I robbed from Byun Soonhoe was easily more than a billion won, so…

I spoke to Sawol Seeum, who was waiting for my answer.

"I can't accept that. Instead, reconsider leaving Silverlight."

After Sawol Seeum was rescued in the game, he went to school for a short time.

He was at a loss for what to do thanks to all the things he enjoyed encountering for the first time in the outside world.

A teacher's occasional joke during class.

Chatting with other students during recess.

The student cafeteria menu of the day.

It was always funny to see him babble like a bird in the story about something really trivial.

The heir to the king's messenger, Sawol Seeum, was an ordinary child who laughed well and rejoiced over small things.

I didn't want him to end up in a cage again.

"If you want to attend, just talk to the head of school affairs, Mr. Jegal Jaegeol. You can trust him."

I said, giving him Jegal Jaegeol's device number.

There were several other teachers I could trust, but the only one I had contact with was Jegal Jaegeol.

'There isn't much time left for my Light.'

After giving him the device code, I immediately got on Red Dragon.

I left one last phrase to Sawol Seeum, who was gazing up at me.

"See you at school."

* * *

Most stories had a tumor-like presence.

For ones who were like benign tumors, they're annoying, but otherwise harmless as long as they don't become too big.

The problems were the ones like malignant tumors.

The longer the cancer was left alone, the more it eroded the story and made characters become ill and die.

'If you remove that lump of cancer now, you may develop another cancer you didn't think of later!'

There were also ideas such as that…

So, should I leave it alone?

That'd be suicide.

In this world, there was an element akin to cancer, and it had to be removed at any cost.

I was going to make a risky deal for the sake of that elimination.

"You have arrived on time, human child."

The Eight Bear Immortals were the Bear Clan's greatest powers.

One of them, Sorrowful Ungnyeo, was waiting for me.

4. Player's Vestige (4)

Even for the True Clansmen with their various roots, a fundamental principle existed.

According to where they came from, the 'origin' of their titles was determined.

There were very few hierarchical relationships between 'origins,' however, there was one main example of it.

The levels of myths, legends, and folktales.

Their roots differed depending on if they were recorded as a myth, remained as a legend, or were floating around as folktales.

'The founding myth of the Republic of Korea in this world is the 'Gaecheon myth,' not the 'Dagun myth.'''

Unlike the Dagun, no bears appeared in the Gaecheon myth.

The Gaecheon was the story of the Tiger Clan who occupied the peninsula. In it, the sacred tigers ruled alongside the Heavenly God and received his blessing.

So, unlike the Tigers, the Bear Clan existed as legends rather than myths.

I came into contact with Sorrowful Ungnyeo, who was a member of the Bears' Eight Bear Immortals.

When I found her at the Fantasy Auction, I handed her a note.

It requested for her to come at this time to Ansan's summit at Bongsu Street in Eastern Muak.

"Thank you for responding."

"It's my way of repaying you for making the dull banquet interesting. Now, speak."

The smiling woman in a black dress and a golden shawl looked like a painting in the dark.

'Let's stay calm…'

Sorrowful Ungnyeo would be angered by what I had to say.

However, I had to say it to get what I wanted.

"The myth… No, the one who's been downgraded to a legend, Red Tiger of the Tiger Clan, will die within one year."

Fwoosh!

A shockwave erupted with Sorrowful Ungnyeo at its center.

Even though I had Yeom Joonyeol's Red Dragon wrapped around me, my hair still fluttered from the force.

'If I hadn't defended myself, a part of my body would've been cut off.'

Seeing the newly formed fine cracks on a distant beacon tower sent shivers down my spine.

"The feud between the True Clan's Tiger and Bear Clans is known to all of mankind on the Korean Peninsula. Even if you know about Red Tiger's death, why would you tell me?"

I didn't answer.

To say that his 'origin' downgraded meant that he committed a sin so great that his roots could be changed.

I didn't know the exact details, but I did know that Sorrowful Ungnyeo was involved.

The Tigers ruled over the Korean Peninsula and received blessings from the Heavenly God.

They wanted to accept and coexist with the Bears, who had been fighting them for supremacy.

However, the Bear Clan didn't give up their ambitions, so Sorrowful Ungnyeo tricked Red Tiger into forsaking the Heavenly God's blessing.

'The Tiger and Bear Clans can only live in the Korean Peninsula equally if the Heavenly God's blessing disappears.'

…After tricking Red Tiger into committing a mortal sin, the Bear Clan rebelled.

The Tigers succeeded in subduing the Bears. But due to Red Tiger's betrayal, most of Heavenly God's blessings upon the Korean Peninsula disappeared, and many of its people were lost.

In order to erase this humiliating history, the Heavenly God and Tiger Clan erased Red Tiger's and the Bear Clan's names from the myth.

And even after the end of the age of myths, the feud between the Tiger and the Bear Clan continued in the unseen world.

It continued even now when the interworld collision occurred and they resurfaced.

However, the fact that was being passed down in the present world was, 'The Tigers and Bears are having a feud. It is presumed that they have been at odds since the time of the Gaecheon myth, but there are no accurate records of it left.'

After all, the story of Red Tiger and Sorrowful Ungnyeo had been erased.

'But if I say that, she'd either try to half-kill or completely kill me.'

I hated being injured and I hated dying even more.

I hid the details and turned Sorrowful Ungnyeo's attention away from them.

"You have the 'Three-Eyed Verdant Branch of Truth.' Please shine the eyes of the Verdant Branch on me."

"Don't you know that you cannot tell any lies in front of my Verdant Branch?"

"Yes."

As Sorrowful Ungnyeo waved her hand in the air, a branch with three red eyes appeared.

The Three-Eyed Verdant Branch of Truth.

It was the most famous of the SSR rank items produced by Sorrowful Ungnyeo. It's ability could determine the authenticity of a claim three times if the other party agreed to it.

Watching Sorrowful Ungnyeo aim her Verdant Branch, I strengthened my resolve.

Once I nodded, the red eyes of the Verdant Branch began to emit a faint glow.

"Is it true that you know the future of Red Tiger?"

"Yes."

One of the Verdant Branch's red eyes closed.

It was true.

The moment you were to lie, instead of closing its red eye, it would pierce your eyes with a curse.

"Will Red Tiger die within a year?"

"Yes."

The second eye of the Verdant Branch closed.

Sorrowful Ungnyeo also tightly closed her eyes for a moment.

After a few seconds of not speaking, she asked her third question in a slightly hoarse voice.

"Will you save Red Tiger?"

I still wasn't sure of that.

Will I save him?

I didn't know with 100% certainty yet if I could.

There was no such thing as an absolute future.

'If I say 'yes' here, I would be lying.'

I closed my mouth.

Seeing that I wasn't answering, she asked another question.

"I'll change the question. Is there anything you can do to prevent Red Tiger's death?"

There was no need to hesitate with this question.

"Yes."

All the Verdant Branch's eyes were closed.

Sorrowful Ungnyeo gracefully waved her arms and made her Verdant Branch disappear.

"Speak, what do you want?"

The eyes of Sorrowful Ungnyeo were moist.

They were eyes full of 5,000 years worth of remorse, anger, and regret.

I looked straight into her eyes and answered.

"I need the three treasures that the Eight Bear Immortals made to harm the Heavenly God."

"What?!"

Fwoosshh-

A tree within a ten meter radius of Sorrowful Ungnyeo dried up and twisted in an instant.

The land changed color, having lost its vitality and died after receiving the wrath of the True Clan.

"Human child, do you know what you're saying?"

"I know."

"Do you know that it's a failure?"

"Yes."

The items appeared in the game's setting book, but not the game itself.

One of my goals could not be achieved without these items.

Before the interworld collision, during a time when the True Clan were still hidden and existed in this world as existences with limited interference over it, the Eight Bear Immortals gathered their strength and wisdom to annihilate the Heavenly God.

However, in the process, two went insane, three fell into a deep sleep, and the attempt ended in failure.

All that was left were the remnants of their failed work.

Sorrowful Ungnyeo quietly closed her eyes.

When she opened her eyes again, there were three glowing cards in her hand.

"Keep in mind that if Red Tiger's breath stops before your short life is over, I, Sorrowful Ungnyeo, will surely destroy you in the name of the True Clan's Eight Bear Immortals."

Shiny item cards flew from Sorrowful Ungnyeo to me.

When the item cards were in my hands, they disappeared into my item window.

Then, my mind was set.

'The biggest homework I had to do before the start of my classes at Silverlight High School…'

After handing the items to me, Sorrowful Ungnyeo was still standing in front of me.

She stared at me with an unreadable gaze.

"Next time we meet, let's do it with you in your true form. As long as you own the failures, I will never fail to recognize you."

She saw through the fact that I was borrowing Yeom Joonyeol's appearance.

'Is the True Clan able to see through Player's Vestige?'

I was nervous, my eyes wide and wary.

Sorrowful Ungnyeo smiled mischievously as if the anger she had displayed until now was a lie.

"I've seen the Dragon Clan's beloved Little Red Dragon a few times before. You can't be that immature kid."

Sorrowful Ungnyeo smiled, revealing her white teeth under the moonlight.

She leaned slightly towards me as if she were looking into the 'Cho Euishin' within Yeom Joonyeol's shell.

'…Red Tiger was bewitched by this True Clansman.'

Sorrowful Ungnyeo was alluring.

But at the same time, she made me afraid that she'd dig up the deepest parts of me.

Without realizing it, I took a step back.

"You are like the image of a distant future that the child of today could never reach."

Fufufu, Sorrowful Ungnyeo smiled softly.

After she had finished speaking, she turned her back on me and took a step. In an instant, she was buried in darkness and disappeared from my sight.

* * *

In the evening, I woke up from the long nap I'd been taking since the first day of the New Year.

Meanwhile, the mysterious fire in Yeouido had turned into a huge 'gate' for crime.

'They dug this far in just one day.'

The case went faster than I'd thought.

I opened several hologram windows and concurrently read the related articles.

[Shocking disappearances of players with rare talents, records of human trafficking found.]

[How far is the reach of the Fantasy Gate? Hundreds of people were surveyed.]

[Main culprit of the Fantasy Gate, 'Byun Soonhoe,' is guilty of human trafficking, assault, injury, kidnapping, confinement, tax evasion, violation of the building law, etc. There is no end to the charges.]

[The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency in charge of the controversy surrounding the negligence towards the Fantasy Gate, state, 'Special inspections are underway, thank you.']

[Notice from the Player Association's Korean Branch expels all players who took part in the Fantasy Auction]

'Is this the power of Song Manseok, the Great Iron Arm Hero…?'

My goal wasn't to just call the fire brigade and a team of professional players contracted with the fire department.

The real goal was to attract the 'Han River Cycling Team.'

Han River Cycling Team.

The leader of this professional player team, which was launched about 20 years ago, was 'Iron Arm Song Manseok,' who would turn 72 this year.

Song Manseok became a professional player fifty years ago and survived against Enemies with nothing but his bare body. He had no proper player support system, no strategic information, and no items.

He'd lost many comrades, but he had saved many more.

The great hero, the Iron Arm Song Manseok, led the way for the dawn of an era where players dominated the world.

However, the great hero passed the age of forty and had already turned fifty. Compared to his youth, his energy levels were low and his body was decrepit. Once he was forgotten by people, he quietly retired.

After that, he created the 'Han River Cycling Club' by inviting his retired player colleagues.

The club started as a simple social gathering where they rode bicycles along the bike path around the Han River every weekend.

Then one day, the Han River Cycling Club members witnessed 100 boys and girls possessed by demon-type Enemies attempting to take their own lives on the Yanghwa Bridge.

This incident, which was later called the 'Yanghwa Bridge Massive Suicide Attempt,' resulted in zero deaths.

It was thanks to the Han River Cycling Club's 15 members, a group of retired players with an average age of 54 at the time.

'Then, the Han River Cycling Team was born.'

After the incident, Song Manseok formed the 'Han River Cycling Team' with the members of his club.

To join, you must have at least thirty years of experience as a professional player.

Over the next 20 years after forming the team, they avoided contact with the media. Additionally, they began to save people in a different way than how the hero Iron Arm had.

Every year, about 1,000 people contemplate suicide on the Han River.

About 400 people actually jump.

There were an abundance of phantom-type and demon-type Enemies that dug into weak hearts before inducing suicide.

However, the only thing that could eliminate an intangible phantom-type Enemy was the human mind.

The Han River Cycling Team found, helped, persuaded, supported, and rescued those weakened individuals.

'The Han River Cycling Team patrols the Han River even during winter holidays and the New Year.'

The convention hall in Yeouido, where the Fantasy Auction was held, was facing the Han River.

What would they do if they saw a large fire?

No matter how late at night it was, the entire team would be summoned and immediately head to the scene.

When Yeom Bangyeol led Red Lion and the Dragon Clan in an attack on the National Assembly, it was thanks to their efforts that no ordinary people died.

'This article also mentions that the Han River Cycling Team was there.'

I swiped my finger to read through it, but the team's name was only mentioned in one line on the hologram.

The experienced Song Manseok would have noticed that Byun Soonhoe was hiding something.

There was no way that the righteous Song Manseok could ignore the dirty Fantasy Auction that'd been happening for years.

'Byun Soonhoe said that he'd already had a discussion with the authorities. However, considering that there was an emergency arrest and a special inspection, Song Manseok must've called in personnel of at least the chief-level.'

Although forgotten by the majority of the public, high-ranking officials in their 50's and above still hadn't forgotten the great hero Song Manseok.

The head of the Player Association's Korean Branch probably would have arrived within ten minutes of a phone call from him.

And after breaking apart the Fantasy Auction, I was given another title besides Unknown Supernova.

tl/n: if you have ever contemplated or attempted to take your life, please contact a professional or call a suicide hotline. it really is worth it to continue living.

4. Player's Vestige (5)

My new title was…

Phantom Thief of the Red Barrier.

It was thanks to how a wall of fire had restricted the people at the Fantasy Auction before sweeping away all it's illegal items.

A reporter who was impressed with the barrier of fire gave me the title.

Fortunately, the Red Barrier Phantom Thief was buried thanks to all the attention on Byun Soonhoe and his crew's history of evil deeds. The public was focused on the overflowing waves of rumors.

The problem came after that.

It happened after I anonymously put the national treasures into the National Museum.

They were cultural assets whose names were only recorded in the Fantasy Auction's books. When they were returned, the Cultural Heritage Administration informed the media and my actions appeared in articles.

They referred to me with the title of Phantom Thief of the Red Barrier.

['Phantom Thief of the Red Barrier' broke into the Fantasy Auction returned the cultural assets]

[The Cultural Heritage Administration 'express gratitude' for the good deeds of the Phantom Thief of the Red Barrier, who exposed the Fantasy Auction]

Since then, my title completely solidified as Phantom Thief of the Red Barrier.

My face got hot.

Red Barrier, what are you talking about?

Phantom Thief, who…?!

[Title] Entity Fit for Cross-Dimensional Future Alteration, Unknown Supernova, Phantom Thief of the Red Barrier

When I checked my status window, Phantom Thief of the Red Barrier was added to the title section.

Of course, only I knew that Cho Euishin was the Red Barrier Thief.

However, I couldn't stop myself from feeling embarrassed.

* * *

I struggled with my embarrassment for the next few days.

Eventually, Byun Soonhoe touched a person that he shouldn't have.

Articles related to it were on the main portal site's news page.

[Fantasy Auction participant claims, 'Little Red Dragon Yeom Joonyeol was there,' Yeom Joonyeol is the 'Phantom Thief of the Red Barrier'?]

[Byn Soonhoe claims that the one really at fault is the 'Phantom Thief of the Red Barrier, Little Red Dragon Yeom Joonyeol,' and is currently investigating the thief's arson, property damage, robbery, injury, and assault]

Yeom Joonyeol was the only son of 'the Ruler of Red Flames, Yeom Bangyeol.'

He was also a star player loved by countless fans.

Attacking such a beloved figure meant you'd have to fight the affection directed towards them, too.

'There is no way that Byun Soonhoe would understand that.'

I opened the comments of the article.

There were already thousands of replies from fans who read the article after seeing Yeom Joonyeol's name.

[It's suddenly about Yeom Joonyeol]

[I have an acquaintance in the Red Lion team. Byun Soonhoe kept calling Red Lion, but they were uncomfortable with it and ignored him. The Red Barrier Thief uses fire-related abilities, so it seems like they're being associated with them.]

[Wasn't Joonyeol doing a live dragon show at an aerial hotel on social media at that exact date and time? There were more than 100,000 people watching in real time lmaoo]

[Our Red Dragon is famous. Seeing a criminal like that sticking around him, haha;]

[Soonhoe, don't fall ill… just die instead.]

Yeom Joonyeol had the perfect alibi and numerous witnesses to clear his name.

Yeom Bangyeol and the members of Red Lion were very displeased with this, so they gathered reporters and were interviewed directly.

At the end of the interview, Yeom Bangyeol was so angry that he repeated twice that he wanted Byun Soonhoe to receive severe punishment.

Although the Red Lion responded and the police ignored Byun Soonhoe's words, Yeom Joonyeol's fans didn't cool down easily.

'Byun Soonhoe must be going crazy.'

Byun Soonhoe and his crew clearly saw me as Yeom Joonyeol. If I were them, I'd be exasperated.

He'd provoked Yeom Joonyeol, thinking that if he talked about seeing Red Dragon, he could turn the tables.

It was argued that the same Bestowed Light couldn't exist twice and it was impossible to copy Bestowed Light. So, if Red Dragon was there, Yeom Joonyeol was, too.

'No recording devices of any type were allowed in the convention center, so no records were left behind.'

Thanks to the use of large-scale abilities and device control tools, Byun Soonhoe was able to hide his auction.

The only pictures related to the Red Barrier Thief in newspapers were ones of the red wall surrounding the convention hall. They were taken from afar, but the barrier seemed to be ascending to heaven.

In the end, Byun Soonhoe's words seemed like nothing more than simple slander, a campaign based on rumors to drag Yeom Joonyeol into the mud.

Byun Soonhoe didn't reflect at all on the crimes he had committed. And whenever he opened his mouth, he'd mention Yeom Joonyeol's name.

Other brazen individuals from the Fantasy Auction party also claimed along with Byun Soonhoe that they'd seen Yeom Joonyeol and were victims.

In the end, Yeom Joonyeol's fandom, which reached its peak of anger, took action.

As a result, the 'Fantasy List' was created.

It was Yeom Joonyeol's fans' newly made list of the Fantasy Auction members, having taken advantage of all their information gathering skills.

They posted the Fantasy List on all kinds of communities, focusing mostly on Yeom Joonyeol's overseas fans, saying, 'If you want to sue them, go ahead.'

'Where did you get all this?'

High-definition portraits of those who participated in the Fantasy Auction along with a compilation of their evil deeds, evidence, and personal details.

The Fantasy List meticulously summarized the current investigation progress.

And so, the Fantasy List was released.

The number of people it mentioned was in the hundreds, and the lucky ones who thought they'd hidden from the controversy were also listed.

Those on the Fantasy List ran wildly, calling it defamation.

'Either way, it's impossible to bury information that has been released on the web.'

Later, the Fantasy List on major search portal sites was changed to an unsearchable keyword.

However, it could be found right away by entering only its consonants or keywords related to it.

Rumors also circulated that Yeom Bangyeol's team, Red Lion, were secretly making backups of and reuploading the Fantasy List.

In the end, it became a secret list that anyone could openly read.

While reading articles and comments, I decided to take the secret that I used my Light to become Yeom Joonyeol to my grave.

* * *

Before school started, we decided to go eat dinner paid for by Yoo Sanghoon.

Should we go to the aerial hotel Snow & Air that had a special winter buffet?

Or maybe the limited-time dinner course to commemorate a famous French pastry chef visiting Korea?

The three of us agonized over the menus and quantities.

In terms of quantity, the buffet was the clear winner.

However, Jang Namwook felt that we should choose the dinner course. That way, we could familiarize ourselves with table manners in preparation for official player events in the future.

This trivial issue was easily solved.

Yoo Sanghee, looking on at our conversation with an expression of pity, just concluded that we should 'go to both.'

Yoo Sanghoon's parents even said that they'd buy meals from the menu every week if Jang Namwook and I wanted them.

Since Jang Namwook entered the military academy's dorms and could only leave on weekends, we decided to go to the limited-time dinner course on Saturday and the hotel buffet on Sunday.

On Saturday, I met Jang Namwook for the first time in a while.

In accordance with the military academy's rules, Jang Namwook's hair was very short.

"Why's your hair like that?"

"…It's the rules."

Jang Namwook spoke while averting his gaze from Yoo Sanghoon's friendly greeting.

'It's a soldier's hairstyle.'

I had the same exact haircut a few years ago.

Jang Namwook wasn't an adult yet, so he wasn't a soldier. However, the rules for him weren't much different for an adult's military academy, so he couldn't help it.

We bought suits not only for the French restaurant's dress code, but also for future player events.

After receiving the clothes recommended by the department store staff we got on the spot, it was time for our reservation. So, we put on our suits and headed to the restaurant and were seated by the waiter.

"Congratulations on placing second in Player Military Academy High School, Jang Namwook."

I gave my congrats before anyone else spoke.

Jang Namwook was bewildered, as if he did not know he would receive congratulations.

"How did you know? But thank you, Euishin."

Yoo Sanghoon, who was spreading his napkin, spoke with a surprised expression.

"You're in second place?"

Jang Namwook, who was always talkative, kept his mouth shut on this matter.

'If I didn't tell him, Yoo Sanghoon probably would've never known.'

Articles bookmarked on my wearable device were displayed as holograms.

Attached to the article was a photo of Jang Namwook along with an unfamiliar face.

"I stumbled across an interview with the first and second placers in Player Military Academy. Jang Namwook can't get his picture taken properly."

"No, he looks the same. Ugly, as usual."

Yoo Sanghoon laughed as he compared the photo with the real Jang Namwook sitting in front of him.

Jang Namwook was overly stiff from nerves, contrasting the natural and relaxed attitude of the first placer sitting next to him.

"Well, congratulations. Who's the person in first?"

Yoo Sanghoon, who was making fun of Jang Namwook's photo, also congratulated him and bookmarked the article about him on his device.

Jang Namwook watched the scene with embarrassment.

"Thanks for the congratulations. The one in first place and I are sharing a dorm room for two people. They're unique."

When talking about the first placer, Jang Namwook made a complicated expression.

They were unique?

I was a little curious.

However, I decided not to pursue the topic since it was rude to ask for too many details about someone who wasn't in the room.

The first menu of the course came out, so it wasn't difficult to change the topic.

"Did you start training in the dormitory?"

"Yep. The military academy has a slightly earlier schedule than other places. It's a bit difficult, but the daylight is worthwhile."

Yoo Sanghoon also showed more interest in the dormitory than the first placer.

"How's your dorm?"

"…Even after ventilating and cleaning it out, it still feels stale."

I knew about that.

I wasn't familiar with military academy dorms, but the general atmosphere of dormitories were all similar.

Even if you ventilate the room and clean it so that there isn't a single particle of dust, the staleness does not go away.

You just had to wait until you got used to it.

"If you don't like it, come back to Silverlight."

It seemed that Yoo Sanghoon still had regrets.

"…It's fine. This was my decision. Even if I take a different path later, I will take responsibility for my choice until I graduate from high school."

In response to Jang Namwook's answer, Yoo Sanghoon scooped amuse-bouche with a heartbroken expression.

Jang Namwook began nagging him to maintain table manners.

As I was talking to these guys, the events of January 1st felt like a dream.

However, I don't dream.

We talked while anticipating the futures of our high school lives.

Eventually, we began talking about the Fantasy Gate, the hottest topic in the player world.

Of course, the Red Barrier Thief was also discussed, so I had to work hard for a while to straighten out my shriveling hands.

'Why the hell did that reporter give me the name Phantom Thief of the Red Barrier?'

It would've been enough to just call me an unknown assailant or unidentified individual.

When the entree came out, Yoo Sanghoon asked me a question.

"Cho Euishin, what class are you in? I'm in class 1."

People were notified of their class in advance.

I was in a class close to Yoo Sanghoon's.

"I'm in class 0."

The notice sent to me on my wearable device had been decided by my deal with the chairman.

Clatter.

Rattle.

I could hear the sound of eating utensils falling.

Jang Namwook, who had been making a lot of noise about Yoo Sanghoon's table manners, and Yoo Sanghoon had both dropped their tableware.

What's wrong?

I tilted my head, but Jang Namwook and Yoo Sanghoon just opened their mouths in amazement.

"Do you have a criminal record?"

"Repent, Cho Euishin."

What were they talking about?

It seems that the notoriety of class 0 was greater than I thought.

I enjoyed the rest of the course meal in the slightly ambiguous atmosphere.

When we were departing, the two were worrying about me being in class 0.

* * *

I ignored all remaining middle school classes, graduation ceremonies, and other events.

My homeroom teacher called a few times, but they ate their words the moment I said I was still facing difficulties because of Son Mingi.

There wasn't much left until I started classes at Silverlight.

I didn't have time to invest in my middle school schedule.

I needed to have all the necessary pieces before school started.

I researched this world, bought items, did physical training, and prepared for my year at Silverlight to start.

And in March, it was time for the entrance ceremony.

tl/n: sorry for the slow updates recently

on a side note, i've been thinking of changing the title of this series to something shorter like "ex rank supporting role's school replay"

EX Rank 15

5. Year 1, Class 0 (1)

A game often has mascot characters it's well known for, a main hero and heroine.

There were also main characters in the national failure PMH, a game where the number of playable characters was in the three digits.

The main hero, Joo Soohyeok.

The main heroine, An Dain.

They were famous for their appearance on the PMH posters. The two of them were depicted standing back to back while holding a pair of swords and a rifle respectively, their gazes pointed up towards the night sky.

They were the typical munchkin characters.

(tl/n: munchkin is slang used to refer to overpowered characters)

The two monstrous geniuses scored perfect scores in the paperwork, written exam, and practical exam for Silverlight High, examinations that boasted the highest difficulty in Korea.

They both represented the new students at the entrance ceremony. After meeting for the first time, they'd go on to engage in a friendly competition.

The two fell in love at first sight. Although they regarded each other as rivals, they grew closer and fell deeper and deeper in love.

However, in a storyline devoid of all hope, there was no room for it to ripen.

In the second half of the final chapter, only Joo Soohyeok, An Dain, and Baek Hogun were left. All other playable characters had died.

A day before the final battle, Joo Soohyeok tried to confess to An Dain.

[Are you about to die? Don't conform to weird clichés!]

An Dain hit him with an iron wall.

Then, she added something else.

[Never confess until I do first.]

The two didn't exchange any more words, but they both made up their minds.

They must come back alive.

However, Joo Soohyeok died while protecting An Dain. She ended up defeating her opponent, but received a fatal wound.

An Dain deactivated her Bestowed Light and spoke to the deceased Joo Soohyeok, who was lying among the corpses of Enemies.

[Soohyeok, I like you. At the first entrance ceremony… from the moment I stood next to you… I liked you, I really liked you…]

An Dain squeezed out the last of her energy and confessed over and over again.

Of course, there was no reply from Joo Soohyeok, and An Dain died.

The last appearance of the two main characters was when Baek Hogun, who arrived too late, looked upon their deceased bodies.

And now, the two main characters, Joo Soohyeok and An Dain, stood as the first year representatives in the entrance ceremony.

"All of our newly admitted freshmen to Silverlight Player Meister High School solemnly swear to focus on academics and practical development while attending. We will live with respect for the school's culture and rules."

"Joo Soohyeok, first year representative."

"An Dain, first year representative."

The two geniuses emanated a force that overwhelmed people.

They simultaneously read the pledge for first year admission, their voices leaving a beautiful echo through the speakers.

It was only a pledge, but I felt like I was watching a very short opera.

'They said they fell in love at first sight, but it doesn't show from the outside.'

Their eyes met for a moment after taking the pledge, but there was a sense of vigilance and tension between rivals.

Still, there were no bad feelings between them.

Rather, they had a noble air around them, one akin to a knight in front of a holy sanctuary.

The Greater Tiger Hall was Silverlight High's main auditorium. It was actually more accurate to describe it as a huge banquet hall rather than a school auditorium.

The teachers and about 2,000 high school students belonging to Silverlight filled the hall.

Hundreds of visitors were on the second floor.

Everyone was stunned by the charm and spirit of the two first year representatives.

"It's almost like Joo Soohyeok and An Dain live in a different world."

"A showdown between two prideful geniuses…!"

"Isn't that a bad thing? It really does seem like a battle of geniuses."

"I only heard rumors about how studious they were in middle school, but it seems like it's for real."

"All the kids at Silverlight studied during middle school. Don't talk about middle school though, it's embarrassing."

"Isn't 'Unknown Supernova' also among the first years? The new students this year are awesome."

The cream of the crop among the two million Korean high school students.

Silverlight High was a place where geniuses and talented people from all over the country gathered.

But even in Silverlight, a great amount of attention was directed towards the two at the top.

'Not many people are talking about me.'

In Silverlight High, the names of the four people in group 13 of the entrance exams were well known. So, all students knew my name and alias.

However, my presence was buried by the protagonists at the center of this world.

'Still, I'm not angry.'

Rather, I'm excited to see the main characters of the game right in front of my eyes.

After taking the oath, Joo Soohyeok and An Dain exited the platform through the stairs down the stage.

The two went to their seats without ever looking back at each other.

After that, teacher introductions continued, but most people were too occupied soaking in the afterglow left by the two geniuses to listen.

'I'll have to find some of my classmates.'

I listened to the teachers' introductions while trying to find kids from class 0, but I couldn't spot any faces from the game.

Attending the entrance ceremony was optional, and the first years were seated on a first-come, first-served basis without any organization based on their class. So, it was impossible to know who was in what class.

All the first years around me were unfamiliar.

'Even if one of them is here, I may not recognize them.'

The game was centered on Joo Soohyeok and An Dain.

At times, the point of view changed to a teacher or a force outside the school, but the story was usually from the perspective of the two leading main characters.

Characters from class 0 only appeared after the two came into contact with them.

'I prepared in advance, but the 'Game Library' doesn't list all the members of class 0…'

After communicating with the Great Transcendent Universe in December, my 'Exclusive Cross-Dimensional Future Alteration Menu' raised from level 1 to 2.

As a result, a new 'Game Library' menu appeared.

The reward for passing out for three days was the book about the game's setting.

'I used to swear about how it was sold both in the game itself and as a physical book.'

You could only gain access to the Game Library by paying.

Of course, I paid for it since I was a stupid, pushover loser when it came to PMH.

I won't cry about or regret it, but I blame myself for being so dumb.

'I was such a loser that the Great Transcendent Universe called me here.'

In the end, the entrance ceremony ended without me finding any students from class 0.

'I'll see them in class anyways.'

I left the entrance ceremony hall.

* * *

The site of Silverlight High School was about 500,000 pyeong.

(tl/n: about 1.7 square kilometers or 0.6 square mile)

Students at Silverlight attended their class in the morning, but in the afternoon, they could choose what class to attend on their own. So, there were means of transportation within the school.

Silverlight provided free bicycles and hoverboards to students as well as the option to ride on aerial shuttles or buses on the ground.

A hoverboard automatically moved you to the building you choose, and most students loved it.

Under the Public Traffic Act, manual operation of a hoverboard was impossible in order to prevent aerial collisions.

Manually operated, privately owned aerial vehicles required a license that could only be obtained through rigorous screening.

Even after obtaining a license, you could only operate your vehicle at an altitude lower than usual or on private property.

'I really wanted to ride one of these.'

I got on the hoverboard, grabbed the handle, and flew into the sky.

I selected the building where year 1's class 0 was located, and a hologram displayed a map. Then, the automatic driving system adjusted my altitude and route so that I aligned with air buses and other hoverboards.

'It's just like a game CG.'

A blue sky.

Hoverboards and aerial buses flying through the air.

The buildings beneath them.

It was all cool and beautiful, just like a game CG.

'It's like a game CG' was the best compliment that I as a gamer could give the wonderful scenery.

'The buildings look even better from above.'

In the center of the school were the central auditorium where the entrance ceremony was held, all the students' and teachers' common facilities such as the student center, the leader's hall, the general club hall, and the alumni hall. Each of them became smaller and smaller.

Instead, I could see a white clock tower standing in front of Silverlight's main gate and protection barrier, the barrier starting from the main gate and covering the entire school.

Buildings and sculptures of various designs sparkled as if they were gems in a huge jewelry box.

'Silver Luster Hall…!'

As I left the central area and entered the area for the first years, I could see the main building and heart of Silverlight, Silver Luster Hall, shining brightly in the distance.

I thought that I wouldn't be impressed since I already visited it to meet with Chairman Hwang Myeongho, but I was wrong.

Silver Luster Hall was the most elegant and beautiful among Silverlight's buildings.

Why did Yellow Tiger allow Silver Luster Hall to be stained with blood?

'I heard that Yellow Tiger designed Silver Luster Hall himself.'

It was a building that he built with such care out of boredom, but it still didn't bother him when it was destroyed or sullied.

While I spent my time thinking about that, the hoverboard gradually moved away from Silver Luster Hall.

* * *

In addition to a hoverboard, Silverlight also provided an earring type wearable device.

It was very difficult for students with an outdated wearable device or none at all to receive notifications or participate in classes that require them.

Of course, I was aware of that when I personally bought different earring type ones.

'I have to be careful, there's a chance that it'll keep a record of my location and incoming messages that the school can look through.'

Thanks to the Information Protection Act, it was basically impossible to view a device's data.

However, in the terms and conditions signed when receiving the earrings provided by the school, there was a provision that various points of information could be viewed in an 'emergency.'

At times, an emergency was interpreted to be 'whenever I want' by teachers like the one who sold Sawol Seeum to the Fantasy Auction.

'When something I consider to be an emergency comes, the first thing I'll do is throw away the earrings that the school gave me.'

I wore the earring I bought in one ear and the earring provided by the school in the other.

When I put on the apricot-colored earring that was shaped to fit in my ear canal, it wasn't outwardly obvious that I was wearing them.

After putting on the earring, I miniaturized the airboard, put it in my item window, and headed to the 1-0 classroom.

For reference, the main hero, Joo Soohyuk, was in class 1-2 while the main heroine, An Dain, was in 1-1.

Unlike years 2 and 3, which separated high-achieving students into special classes, first years were organized so that classes 1 to 10 had similar class averages.

It was debated who between Joo Soohyeok or An Dain, who both had the same grades, would enter into class 1. In the end, the two agreed to go by alphabetical order.

As a result, An Dain was in class 1 and Joo Soohyeok was in class 2.

'Considering that crowd over there, one part must be class 1 while the other is class 2.'

There must've been a lot of first year students who wanted to talk to the two main characters.

Class 0 was right next to class 1, so I'd see it if I went through that crowd.

As expected, I saw the classroom right after I stepped out of the crowd.

* * *

Year 1, class 0's classroom.

Maybe I was a bit late, because the teacher in charge of 1-0 came in as soon as I sat down.

He looked around the classroom before writing his name with electronic chalk on the digital blackboard.

'Ham Geunhyeong.'

Ham Geunhyeong was a playable character and the director of the student body.

With Silverlight's independence-heavy teaching style, teachers who were too strict or mindful of etiquette couldn't be in the student body's director. It was a position where they'd be expected to take charge of the student and life guidance departments.

Ham Geunhyeong was flexible, understood the physiology of high school students, and knew how to respond to unexpected situations.

Even in the game, I remembered him being like a fox wearing a bear's mask.

"I'm Ham Geunhyeong, I'll be in charge of this class this year. It's likely that I'll be absent from class often since I'm also the director of the student body."

In the past, the student body director was also the head of the school.

Generally, it'd be rare for a busy director of a broad department to also be a high school homeroom teacher.

However, in Silverlight, considering the abnormalities of 'class 0,' it was customary for a teacher with a somewhat high level of authority to take it over.

For reference, the homeroom teacher for 2-0, Jegal Jaegeol, was the director of the education department, and the homeroom teacher of 3-0 was the director of the research department.

"The position of teacher's aide is still vacant, so it'll be announced as soon as it's decided. However…"

There was a small wrinkle between Ham Geunhyeong's eyebrows.

"It's my first time seeing kids like you."

Ham Geunhyeong's response was only natural.

About 500 new students entered Silverlight every year, it was impossible for him to have seen them all before.

"No matter how many times I do this, it's too much."

That also resonated with me.

This was my first time seeing a case like this in any elementary school, middle school, high school, or college.

"We only have a quarter of our full class. That being said, attendance isn't reflected in the school records."

Four people.

Including myself, that was the number of students attending class in 1-0.

The total number of students in the class was 16.

We were probably the only class with an attendance rate of 25% on the first day of school.

"Today, we'll choose class president and vice president before dismissing. The class precept will be decided by me."

Year 1, class 0.

'Come to school on time.'

It was printed in bold cursive letters on a fully holographic sheet of paper on the electronic blackboard.

It was a quick lesson that seemed to be written by someone who wasn't in their right mind, but Ham Geunhyeong was very serious.

"Whoever wants to be class president, raise your hand."

There were three other people in the class besides me.

Two were female and one was male.

'Let's take a look…'

One of the female students was the playable character Kim Yuri.

The other was a NPC named Han Yi.

Both were characters I remembered seeing in the game.

Meanwhile, the male student.

The moment I saw their face, I couldn't help but mutter with a shocked expression.

"…Chairman?"

I was very quiet, but the male student turned around and glared at me.

'Ah, I'm doomed.'

I was caught up in the atmosphere of the entrance ceremony, so I guess my excitement made me relax.

The bullshit I spouted may have been the worst move I ever made in this world.

I tried to organize my thoughts and think of a way to handle the current situation.

However, I couldn't think of anything.

And since I didn't think of anything, a cycle of unresolved reasoning, disorder, confusion, and chaos flooded my mind.

At that moment, a beep sounded through the classroom speakers.

Ding dong bing bong-

― The two students, Cho Euishin and Hwang Jiho from class 1-0, please report immediately to the office of Silverlight's chairman. Again, the two students, Cho Euishin and Hwang Jiho from class 1-0, please report immediately to the office of Silverlight's chairman. That is all.

"I'll be going to the chairman's office, Mr. Ham Geunhyeong."

Chairman Hwang Myeongho… No, the student Hwang Jiho grabbed my arm and quickly dragged me out of the classroom.

My height and weight had decreased compared to when I was an adult, but his movements were so light that it was as if he was holding a balloon.

Before the classroom door closed, I could hear Ham Geunhyeong groan.

"…Our attendance rate on the first day has halved."

After the doors were closed, the attendance rate of class 0 fell from 25% to 12.5%.

tl/n: if anyone's having trouble with visualizing the "earring wearable device" thing, just know i was confused for a while too. the author uses the term "earring" (as in the literal english word) for them. korean has actual words for earring, so you can safely assume that "earring-type wearable devices" aren't the kind that need you to pierce your earrings or anything.

also, about updates: sorry for being so slow. i had a few tests last week that didn't help, but i promise that i'm trying my best to update at least once every week! i love ex rank, so i'm hoping that i can get through the entire novel at some point. meanwhile, i'll be trying my best to keep my mtls as high quality as i can manage

don't forget to vote about shortening the series name btw: https://strawpoll.com/dqfssgpdy

tl/n: small correction for a title from Hwang Myeongho's status menu

신역의 수호자: Prisoner's Guardian -> Guardian of the Sacred Domain

sorry again for the inconvenience, this novel's terms are tricky to mtl at times

5. Year 1, Class 0 (2)

At the beginning of the game, there was an extra who provoked Joo Soohyeok before being beaten by him in a cool fashion.

He was a rare type of extra for a prestigious high school.

He studied in middle school, but pretended to be a strong gangster after entering high school.

However, nothing became of the guy's poor behavior.

His lungs were bad, but he smoked cigarettes. In the end, he couldn't finish smoking a single one. Whenever he tried getting into street fights, the tables would always be turned on him. So, Joo Soohyeok would swoop in to help him.

In the extra's few in-game appearances, he was a loser.

Around the end of his first year, the extra ended up being influenced by Joo Soohyeok's upright belief in him.

After reflecting on his trivial wrongdoings, he became friends with Joo Soohyeok and seemed to be upgraded to a supporting character.

However, a certain demon who was aiming for Joo Soohyeok enemized the extra.

(tl/n: enemy + -ized = enemized)

The demon flawlessly dug into the extra's weak heart by using his remaining sense of faint envy.

As a result, Invidius of Envy, a higher being and a demon of the Seven Deadly Sins, possessed the extra.

A half-enemized extra, possessed by a demon.

During the fierce battle with the demon, all teachers present were wiped out and dozens of students had died.

The only person who could act was Joo Soohyeok.

If he didn't kill the extra, those who were wounded, but still alive, would be killed.

However, Joo Soohyeok couldn't take the life of his friend, the extra.

When Joo Soohyeok hesitated and was about to lower his sword, the extra resisted with all his might to regain consciousness for a moment.

[Joo Soohyeok, you fucking bastard! If you don't kill me now, I'll kill you first! So, please…]

Those words became the extra's last will.

Thanks to the extra's courage, Joo Soohyeok swung his swords and ripped through his flesh.

After killing his friend, Joo Soohyeok's mind and position were shattered.

The Player Association and Joo Soohyeok's family worked hard to defend him.

However, nothing was left on the recording devices after they'd been damaged by the demon's interference.

In the eyes of others, Joo Soohyeok was a heartless person who killed his classmate right after he regained their sense of self from resisting the possession, and without much hesitation.

Fortunately, thanks to the testimony of other survivors, Joo Soohyeok was not punished. However, the Hwangmyeong Foundation still considered him a risky factor.

So, when Joo Soohyeok started his second year, it was decided that he'd go into class 0.

Since Chairman Hwang Myeongho was interested in Joo Soohyeok, he personally observed him in year 2, class 0.

He used his alter ego Hwang Jiho, the very same one who was now in year 1, class 0.

"Euishin, how did you find out?"

"Student Euishin, how did you find out?"

An aerial shuttle to Silver Luster Hall's office had been waiting at the front doors of the building dedicated to first years.

As soon as they… no, as soon as he arrived, both of him spoke at the same time with twinkling eyes as if he didn't intend to even try and hide it.

[Description]

The Yellow Tiger of the Gaecheong myth.

He was given the power to 'be anywhere' by the Heavenly God.

As long as the Heavenly God's blessing can reach him, he can exist wherever he pleases.

He volunteered to protect the sacred domain where White Tiger is imprisoned, and the Heavenly God permitted him to do so.

(Loading partially failed.)

Excluding his name and titles, the status window was the same as the chairman's.

In the Gaecheon myth, Yellow Tiger's wish to the Heavenly God was to 'be anywhere.'

The Heavenly God granted that wish, so Yellow Tiger could exist literally anywhere.

Simply put, he was able to create alter egos.

Any True Clansman could manipulate the apparent age of their body, so Yellow Tiger could create as many copies of himself at any age he pleased.

"…Could you talk to me as just one person?"

Seeing Yellow Tiger in his 60's and teens talking at the same time pained me.

Most True Clansmen that weren't hostile to humanity had a deal with the government that granted them several potential family registers.

It seemed like Yellow Tiger used that to leave an empty seat at Silverlight so that he could enter as a student whenever he wanted.

Yellow Tiger answered as the teenage Hwang Jiho.

"Then would it be more comfortable for you to talk to me like this?"

"I wouldn't be comfortable either way, though."

"Hahaha, this is better than last time when you had to act polite. But why don't you tell me how you know?"

His tone was openly intimidating.

However, him approaching me in the form of Hwang Jiho meant that he didn't plan on killing me right away.

Thanks to that, I was a bit relieved.

Hwang Myeongho.

Hwang Jiho.

Yellow Tiger.

(tl/n: yellow tiger is "hwang ho," this guy literally just added a syllable in the middle of his name and called it a day)

Considering Yellow Tiger's personality, he didn't use his brain that much.

I quickly came up with an excuse.

"It wouldn't be fun if I just told you outright."

If you wanted to hide something from Yellow Tiger, this was the best phrase to use.

As expected, Hwang Jiho blinked and nodded his head.

"Then we'll find out for ourselves."

Yellow Tiger was an easier guy than I thought.

"But when I'm in this form, make sure to speak informally with me. If people get suspicious of me because of you… I don't want to kill you, so what should I do instead?"

Yellow Tiger was an easy guy, but he was also a scary guy.

"Okay, I get it."

I started speaking informally right away.

Hwang Jiho smiled as if he was just joking, but I knew that he was being serious.

'Maybe this is a good thing?'

Being able to easily contact Yellow Tiger would make proceeding with things in the future easier.

It'd be annoying to have to go to Silver Luster Hall every time I had business with him.

A first year frequently contacting the chairman would look strange to outsiders.

"I have a favor to ask you."

"Do you want to do business again?"

Our previous interaction was considered to be a deal.

He wasn't wrong, so I affirmed it.

"Yeah. There's a Silverlight teacher involved in both the 'magic beast's intrusion at the entrance exam' and the 'disappearance of Sawol Seeum.' Additionally, the Bears interfered either directly or indirectly during both of them."

I hoped that the teacher would be swept away by the Fantasy Gate, but I was unlucky enough to still have their name on my schedule.

The teacher hadn't even been on the Fantasy List.

Their luck and fabrication skills were fantastic in the game, and it seemed like it was the same here.

"So what?"

The chairman wasn't doing his job.

Yellow Tiger's attitude made it seem like he didn't care whether the school was open or not.

'If that's the case, I don't know why you're still acting as chairman.'

His title was 'Guardian of the Sacred Domain.'

The sacred domain was Silverlight, Seoul.

Silverlight was the sacred land mentioned in the Gaecheon myth, the place where the Heavenly God descended from the sky and granted the wishes of the sacred tigers.

'But why isn't he doing anything?'

Even when the Bears were making a mess in Silverlight, his reaction was, 'So what?'

If he was going to act like this, it was perplexing why Yellow Tiger ever volunteered to be Guardian of the Sacred Domain.

It'd be hard for me to expect Yellow Tiger to fulfill his duties as chairman.

But first, I said what needed to say.

"I need lists detailing teachers' properties as well as the students who received special admission personality interviews at Silverlight."

"Okay, then what will you give me in return?"

I shook my head.

"You're not the one I want to make a deal with."

"Huh?"

"The one I want to make a deal with is Red Tiger. I'd like to receive the list of property details in exchange for telling Red Tiger the teacher's name."

Hwang Jiho didn't respond right away.

The handsome teenager's playful eyes darkened for a moment.

He was obviously the same age as me, especially when considering his school uniform. However, Hwang Jiho's expression made it difficult to determine how old he really was.

"You know 'us' well."

That's because I've been watching you all through a screen for ten years.

I know you well.

'But I still don't understand you.'

Hwang Jiho contemplated for a moment before his eyes lit up. His expression made it seem like he'd never been in deep thought in the first place.

He appeared to be expecting something interesting to happen.

It seemed like he would just tell Red Tiger what I said.

"Got it, I'll tell Red Tiger. He's not in the range of radio waves right now due to personal matters, so it may take a while."

He took it as is.

Speaking to Red Tiger on my behalf could also be considered a deal of some sorts, so I was a bit worried about how it'd go.

It seemed like the mistake I made in the classroom today was a blessing in disguise.

* * *

After meeting with Yellow Tiger, but before returning to the dorms, I decided to take a detour.

The site of Silverlight High School included a gentle, hilly mountain with an elevation of 156 meters above sea level.

Its name was Sky Wing Mountain.

The mountain was called that thanks to how when viewed from above, it looked like wings spread towards the sky.

The residential area was located just below Sky Wing Mountain, so wild animals could come down to the main gate of the dorms.

Since the barrier around Silverlight only defended against Enemies, True Clansmen, and humans who weren't registered in the barrier's database, the intrusion of wild animals couldn't be prevented.

'There was once an event in a side quest to exterminate wild boars that invaded the dorms…'

Wild boars weren't Enemies from otherworlds, so it was a side quest no one did due to the poor rewards.

'Let's go look for it.'

I ran around Sky Wing Mountain, the outskirts of the residential area, and the trails, looking around.

I was searching for the main heroine An Dain's pet dog.

"Where are you, Cottonball?"

The beginning of PMH's story, An Dain took in an abandoned, lame puppy.

An Dain named the cute, fluffy puppy 'Cottonball' and raised it in Sky Wing Mountain with the permission of the residential area's management team.

'Pets aren't allowed in the dorms, so there was no option other than keeping Cottonball in the mountains.'

However, then the midterm exams in the first semester of the first year arrived.

Cottonball died after some people who were jealous of An Dain fed it baked goods mixed with pesticides.

After burying Cottonball, An Dain wept on its muddy grave.

Having witnessed this scene, Joo Soohyeok personally investigated it and caught the perpetrators.

'The process of finding the culprits was Joo Soohyeok's solo quest in the game. Even the scene where they were caught and thrown before An Dain was good.'

At first, the perpetrators flew into a rage and denied it.

After being faced with evidence, they claimed that it was just a joke and that they didn't know it would die from them giving it pesticides.

Additionally, the perpetrators claimed that An Dain was tormenting them over the puppy's death, which was just a joke, and that they were the real victims.

'Since Joo Soohyeok is the son of a chaebol, they couldn't touch him. Instead, those pathetic bastards aimed for An Dain.'

(tl/n: chaebol – plutocracy, rich business family, or monopoly. basically, pretty much all of his relatives are rich and powerful)

The teacher in charge of the issue punished An Dain, rebuking her and saying 'don't bully your friends for just joking around.'

Joo Soohyeok actively intervened, so An Dain didn't face any consequences. However, the perpetrators weren't punished at all.

Enraged, Joo Soohyeok tried to mobilize his family's power against the culprits. However, he was stopped by An Dain, who was worried that he would get himself into trouble.

'What a typical conclusion for a school in Hell Joseon's flames.'

(tl/n: 'Joseon' is an old name for Korea while 'Hell Joseon' is a term used to criticize Korean society)

Reality was like a sewer. Whenever an accident occured in reality's sewer-like school, it was usually solved like that.

'An Dain was really unlucky.'

There were many good teachers and students in Silverlight.

The perpetrators and their teacher were the biggest trash of the school.

The culprits were illegally enrolled in Silverlight, while the teacher was favored by the culprits' parents' authority.

Joo Soohyeok and An Dain's weakness was that they believed all teachers at Silverlight would be fair to their students.

The two were geniuses, but they still were pure-hearted high school students who hadn't faced the harshness of the world yet. So, there wasn't anything they could do.

'In terms of the story, saving Cottonball will have no effect on the ending…'

But I didn't want to see Cottonball die.

Or the main heroine An Dain crying.

* * *

As I wandered around Sky Wing Mountain, I checked the time and saw that it was already 6 o'clock.

In early March, sunset was around 6:30.

Cottonball wouldn't move at all if it was too dark.

I decided to finally end the search by speaking out loud to no one but myself.

"Cottonball, come out tomorrow."

Now I'd go back to the residential area, eat dinner at the Land Wing Hall's dorms and cafe, organize my luggage, clean up, and skip dorm orientation…

As I descended, I thought about my future plans.

'Huh?'

I felt a gaze from above and lifted my head to meet it.

A white tiger was looking down at me.

'Baek Hogun…!'

Old, worn out vending machines are placed all over Sky Wing Mountain's hiking trail.

And on top of one stood Baek Hogun.

His white hair was dyed red by the sunset.

I stared at Baek Hogun, who was illuminated from behind.

When Baek Hogun appeared in front of people, he always disguised himself as a normal Korean. So, I'd never even seen him with gray hair in the game.

Crunch.

Baek Hogun made eye contact with me and jumped off the vending machine.

His landing made him seem weightless, like a feather drifting onto the surface of water.

Before I knew it, Baek Hogun's hair was dyed black as he stood on the ground.

His appearance was the same as the Baek Hogun playable character I'd used the most.

'Why?'

Baek Hogun was staring at me.

It was just like when we met at the gym right after the 'Unnamed Side Character's Tutorial' was cleared.

'Why are you doing this?'

Even in my past world, it was said that the gaze of a tiger had the mystical ability to paralyze people.

That gaze paled when compared to that of the True Clan's White Tiger.

It was difficult to move or breathe.

I needed to sort this out.

Let's talk.

"You got a problem?"

Uh, that wasn't right.

I was doomed.

Why did I talk like that?

And towards someone of the True Clan.

I shouldn't have done that and I regret it now, but what should I do?

It was already too late.

I probably couldn't do anything.

I was ready to try politely asking him to stop looking at me before running home.

However…

'Are you smiling…?'

Baek Hogun's lips were slightly distorted.

He was laughing? No, was he getting angry?

While I was confused, Baek Hogun erased that smile from his lips.

Swish.

And with a gust of wind, Baek Hogun disappeared in an instant.

It seemed that he flew somewhere using his leaping skill.

Of course, I had no intention of pursuing Baek Hogun.

'It feels like a storm whisked through my head.'

There was something strange about Baek Hogun in this world.

He'd also appeared in the 'Unnamed Side Character's Tutorial.'

And just now he'd appeared in front of me, Cho Euishin, a first year student at Silverlight.

'It bothers me.'

He was the playable character I used for the longest time, the character who was with me until the final battle.

It was natural for me to be concerned.

'However, I don't have to think about it right now.'

Baek Hogun wasn't a character who harmed others.

Besides for the final chapter, there was no event that would cause him to die.

I decided to postpone the investigation of Baek Hogun for my future self.

I look forward to working together, future-me.

* * *

There were five main buildings in the residential area.

Three 20-story dorms could accommodate about 30 people per floor, one building for each grade level.

Four buildings when you added a building dedicated to faculty and staff.

Five buildings if you include the main dorm building, the Land Wing Hall, nicknamed the Land Hall.

The dorm's main building, the Land Wing Hall, contained the Land Wing Union room, a restaurant for students in the dorm, a canteen, self-study rooms, seminar rooms, group study rooms, simulator rooms, a gym, etc.

The dormitory was designed so that every student attending could use it. However, it was quite comfortable since 50% of Silverlight's students commuted to school.

This meant that the space each person could use in the residential area was doubled.

The dorms had rooms made for two people, but unless requested in advance, one person was assigned to each room.

As a result, I was alone in a two-person room on the 17th floor of the first year dorm.

'This is several times larger than my room in the slums.'

The room's interior was like a small apartment.

It had two bedrooms, a shared living room and kitchen, showers, and a balcony.

After taking a look around the dorm room, I unpacked my luggage and started the room's three-dimensional robot vacuum cleaner and air purifier. After that, the cleaning was finished.

'Should I wash up early and go to bed?'

I had nothing to do.

While I was thinking about it, I remembered that Jang Namwook and Yoo Sanghoon were curious about how Silverlight's dorms looked.

I took a few photos of the room with my wearable device and posted them in the group chat.

[Jang Namwook] The dormitory is good. There are two bedrooms, a living room, and kitchen. And that's a shower room over there? Are you using a two-person room by yourself?

[Yoo Sanghoon] Can I come over?

[You] It's a shower room. I'm living alone. You can visit before 8pm.

[Jang Namwook] Can outside students enter? I can go on weekends.

[You] No, it's against dormitory rules

[Jang Namwook] What a pity ㅠㅠ

[Yoo Sanghoon] transfer

At this point, I couldn't tell if Yoo Sanghoon still wanted to bring Jang Namwook to Silverlight, or if he was just making fun of him.

And Jang Namwook, it isn't cute when a guy bigger than me uses 'ㅠㅠ.'

But something happened while I was contemplating how to make fun of Jang Namwook.

The unprompted system notification made me jump from the spot.

I turned off all the holograms on my wearable device and immediately activated my Light.

Thousands of character cards began to shimmer around me.

As long as Player's Vestige was active, I'd be able to handle most potential issues.

'The Force of Destiny skill is too abstract, so I can't predict what'll happen.'

If it was a short fight, '100 Seconds of Grace' from 'Hundred Second Kwak Gyeongku' would be the most useful.

If I needed to move quickly, 'Flash in the Dark' Oh Hye-ji's 'Steadfast Walk Under the Moon' would be good.

But after looking at the sky, I changed my mind.

'No, I can't see the moon well tonight because of the clouds, so I can't. I'll go for the next best solution, the Bestowed Light of 'Ma Jinseung, Lord of the Grassland'…'

Events during the game that occurred in the dorms rushed through my head, and I selected a number of episodes that could occur at the current moment and characters to use accordingly.

But then, one of the character cards hovering around me went out of control.

Against my will, it slipped through the closed window.

I immediately opened the balcony window and reached for the card.

'The playable character on the card is….'

But before I saw the character card, all my nerves tensed.

Someone was falling from the roof of the dorm.

tl/n: cliffhanger!

"A pair of swords and a long gun". Is that supposed to be a long spear? Translation of gun and spear are often mixed up. So I assume this weapon is not supposed to be a rifle like weapon?

nope, literally "long gun," think sniper rifle. it probably sounds less weird in korean, but i'll go ahead and just change it to the actual name of the gun

And you seem to be a part of the self-sacrificial bastards group (looks at kdj, krs and hyj) judging from future events. You'd do anything to keep your kids safe and that makes me love you and hate you at the same time. *Slight spoiler(?)* Luckily, you'll have some people around to scold you and care for you haha.

I absolutely love how methodical Euishin is when he does things – it's so satisfying when it pays off in the end. Love how he grabbed the loot like a true gamer.

//"T-Thief!"

"Are you introducing yourself?"//

Absolutely cold-blooded my guy.

Honestly people who get isekai'd to game worlds have an edge over novel readers because they get to see the maps, character designs and probably have a list of abilities and stuff as well as items. Like novel readers imagine everything and have to hope stuff looks the same whereas game players are like yeah I know all the secret passages/items and know how to stack abilities I guess.
