tl/n: more changes to things

(already fixed in prev chapters)

진족(眞族): Invaders -> True Clan

a pretty big change, i was seriously overthinking the hanja

이레나: Irena -> Lee Lena

sorry again, thx for your patience

5. Year 1, Class 0 (3)

A player's physical and mental abilities were far superior to those of an average person.

Their reaction speed was also much faster.

The moment I saw someone falling from the roof, my head went to work very quickly.

My dorm room was on the 17th floor.

Up there was the roof of a 20-story building.

Considering the height of the building, they were falling from 10 to 15 meters above me.

Since the weight of the falling person couldn't be confirmed, I couldn't calculate their exact potential energy.

But that high up?

If they were a regular person, colliding with the ground would be enough to instantly kill them.

I wondered if my current strength and ability level were enough to catch them.

Even if I didn't get hurt or die, there was a chance that I'd miss the falling person.

'I have to use Light.'

The dormitory had CCTV cameras installed on its outer walls.

If I revealed to the world that my Bestowed Light could freely change my appearance and abilities, my actions would be heavily restricted.

'Then let's use Light without causing any change in my appearance.'

In the worse case scenario, l'd fail and expose Player's Vestige. However, I couldn't let someone die right before my eyes.

'Baek Hogun…'

The first character I thought of was my main playable character, Baek Hogun, who I met a few hours ago.

If I used Baek Hogun's strength, someone who wielded a greatsword and was a member of the Tiger Clan, I'd be able to withstand the force.

Due to the short time duration, I couldn't use the final version of Baek Hogun.

However, I could use his regular version with the Heavenly God's Wrath debuff without any issues.

'I'll let the power of Baek Hogun descend on my body. But instead of enveloping it in my whole body, I'll completely bind the power within me…!'

I don't know if it'd actually work, but I had to try.

It was my first attempt, but I should succeed.

I'd put all my concentration into expressing Player's Vestige with that image in my head.

Fwoosh-

Baek Hogun's card turned into light and wrapped around my body. Simultaneously, I reached out to the person who was falling.

My arms felt heavy for a moment, but with Baek Hogun's overall stats applied, I stably caught them.

And I was still in the form of the 17-year-old Cho Euishin.

'Success, I haven't changed!'

Before they could slip out of my hands, I fell backwards onto the balcony.

"Ahh… Uwaaaaah!"

"Fell! Some… Someone fell!"

It seemed that I wasn't the only one who saw someone falling through my window.

Screams were heard from upstairs, followed by murmurs here and there.

I looked down at the fainted figure in my arms.

They were a playable character.

I had even met and talked to them a while ago.

[Description]

(Loading partially failed.)

The one who fell from the sky was Lee Lena, the person I met at the Fantasy Auction.

She was the child who desperately advised me to leave when I was in the form of Yeon Joonyeol.

'Lee Lena…'

When I canceled Player's Vestige, the cards each lost their light one by one and returned to me.

Lee Lena's character card, the one that flew out to the balcony due to Force of Destiny activating, was the last to disappear.

* * *

In the event of an incident at the dorms, the first to be informed was the Land Wing Union, an autonomous organization made up of students from the dorm.

Silverlight High had no dorm manager.

The school's residential area management team were in charge of the facility. However, the Land Wing Union was responsible for managing the students in the dorms, mediating conflicts, making rules, managing the store, etc.

There used to be a dorm manager at Silverlight.

However, problems arose when a certain dorm manager recruited using dubious means took advantage of their position's privileges.

They were an incompetent manager who had connections, but lacked the qualifications to be a player.

Additionally, they had a sense of entitlement and inferiority towards players belonging to the most prestigious high school in Korea.

The dorm manager used their meager position and authority to inflict pain on the exceptional Silverlight students and enjoy feeling superior.

'Some incidents were mentioned in the game as well.'

'Disciplinary action for a group of third years a day before the college entrance exam'

'An incident of sexual harassment in the Land Wing Hall's self-study room'

'A case of public corporal punishment in the Land Wing Hall's student cafe'

And many other things on top of those.

After numerous accusations and complaints, the dorm manager was fined and placed on probation.

However, the board of directors and dorm manager colluded to steal billions of dollars from the annual budget for the dorm's operation and management.

With the board of directors' backing, the dorm manager was even more brazen and persistent when harassing students.

'Then, things started to improve 15 years ago when a new student council president entered office.'

Under the leadership of the student council president 15 years ago, the students of Silverlight agreed to expel the dorm manager and corrupt board of directors.

The student union launched a 'Silverlight Student Signature Campaign' to call for their resignation, dismissal, and subsequent retirement.

Students on leaves of absence, in hospitals, and studying abroad for a short period of time also sent signatures by mail.

The signature campaign was carried out with explosive support. It set a record after it obtained signatures from every single student, but the majority of board members continued to be shameless.

They adhered to the old-fashioned position of, 'Students graduating in three years shouldn't be allowed to engage in school management. The board members have an obligation to teach a prestigious high school's arrogant students some manners.'

'That's why things kept becoming an even bigger deal.'

When the signature campaign failed, the teachers joined the students' side.

The students and teachers of Silverlight refused to attend or hold classes, holding a silent protest outside the main building, Silver Luster Hall.

The student council made a video about the aspects of the case, including evidence and records.

The video was uploaded to various sites with subtitles in 38 different languages. Additionally, they actively held interviews with the media to reveal the situation in detail.

The entire nation's attention was focused on the unprecedented situation at Korea's most prestigious special high school for players. The foreign media also paid attention to it, pushing the board of directors into a corner.

In the end, Chairman Hwang Myeongho returned from a long absence and ruled in favor of the students, ending the controversy.

In the process, the five director's embezzlement and breach of trust was revealed, resulting in their dismissal. Afterwards, they were all found guilty of misconduct and were sentenced to prison.

As a result, the 'Land Wing Union' was created, an autonomous dorm management organization run by students.

The Land Wing Union became among the most prominent student organizations at Silverlight behind the student council, leadership club, and general clubs.

And the person who flew to the balcony of my dorm room on a manually operated hoverboard was the president of the Land Wing Union, Seong Siwan, a third year at Silverlight.

'The Land Wing Union must've been contacted right away.'

It would have been possible to find this room by looking at the CCTV's video records from monitoring the outer wall of the dorm.

In case of an emergency, representatives of student organizations were issued a manually operated hoverboard that could be used on campus and a license to use it. So, Seong Siwan was able to fly straight here.

Even so, arriving in two minutes was too fast.

"I came after seeing the CCTV footage, are you okay?"

Seong Siwan must have been very rushed.

With water dripping from his hair and his T-shirt the wrong way around, it seemed like he ran right out of the shower.

The tips of his hair were a little frozen by the night wind of early March.

"I'm okay. The kid who fell passed out."

"Alright… Can I come in?"

"Come on in."

Seong Siwan threw his hoverboard and shoes on the balcony, entering the room before gazing at Lee Lena lying on the sofa.

Meanwhile, it was still noisy outside.

The first year dormitory had a total of 20 floors.

The 1st to 10th floors were for women.

The 11th to 20th floors were for men.

And I was on the 17th floor.

Lee Lena would immediately catch peoples' eye here.

"It doesn't look like there are any injuries, so no need for healing items."

Seong Siwan let out a deep sigh of relief and put the healing item card he was holding into his pocket.

"Euishin, I'm sorry… Could I just say this was a joke from class 0?"

"Yes?"

"You and Lena are both in class 0. If inconsistencies are found with my claim that it was a joke, I'll take responsibility and explain it. You saved Lena… I'm so sorry."

Seong Siwan bowed his head to me.

I was surprised that Seong Siwan bowed his head to a first year without hesitation. Also, he even knew my name.

'Did you memorize the names of all dorm students?'

But what surprised me the most was the fact that Lee Lena was in class 0.

After all, in the game, Lee Lena wasn't in the class.

'It wouldn't be bad to treat it as a joke for now.'

Being involved in the commotion around a suicide attempt.

Being involved in a prank.

It was easy to tell which one would be more of a problem.

At a minimum, I needed to cover this up until I heard details about it from Lee Lena.

When I nodded my head, Seong Siwan had a half-relieved, half-apologetic expression. Then, he stuck his head out to the balcony and shouted loudly.

"Go back in. The class 0 kids were just joking around!"

The murmuring ceased for a moment before voices erupted from everywhere.

"The Land Wing Union hyung is here. Hey, go back in!"

"Class 0, I see. I can't believe they did something on the first day."

"Those class 0 bastards better run fast. Today is the first day of school!"

"Was it skill training?"

"I think they were preparing for April Fool's Day in advance. I really thought someone fell."

"It's just like what I heard in orientation, amazing."

All the windows in the first year dorm closed, and silence descended in an instant.

The resolution was quick and seamless.

"At the dorm orientation, I introduced bizarre incidents that could occur here and how to deal with them… Four out of the five examples were cases from class 0."

Class 0 was too strong.

What the hell did past class 0s do?

No, when I thought about it carefully and considered the actions of class 0 in the game, that reaction seemed plausible enough.

Replacing all the contents of the school water tank with coffee and milk.

Building a giant ice castle on the lake in school grounds.

Dozens of bombing incidents at the old school building that was scheduled to be demolished.

There were many other things besides those.

I was very concerned about what the five incidents used as examples were.

I should've gone to the dorm orientation.

While I was thinking that, Seong Siwan made a call through his wearable device.

"Mr. Ham Geunhyeong, it's Siwan. Ah… You heard at the teachers' living quarters? That's right, but they were rescued in the middle with no injuries… Yes, class 0… Yes? Both are in class 0, Lee Lena and Cho Euishin. Yes, I'll be there soon."

Seong Siwan contacted Ham Geunhyeong, the class 0 homeroom teacher.

I could only hear Seong Siwan's voice, but I was able to predict what Ham Geunhyeong said.

"We should probably go see Mr. Ham Geunhyeong. Let's go out to the balcony right away. If you set the hoverboard to expand for passengers, it'll change into a four-seater."

While Seong Siwan was manipulating the hoverboard he left on the balcony, I put the blanket item he gave me around Lee Lena.

'…She's very skinny.'

Lee Lena was slimmer than when I saw her at the Fantasy Auction.

Her small, pale face was pitiful.

I wrapped Lee Lena meticulously in a blanket and held her. That way, she couldn't be seen from the outside and was also away from the cold wind.

"Let's go."

After confirming that Lee Lena and I were onboard, Seong Siwan started the hoverboard.

Seong Siwan was considerate of Lee Lena and drove his hoverboard very slowly.

"Does this happen often?"

"Huh?"

"You seem accustomed to dealing with it."

Seong Siwan seemed flustered when he came to my room.

However, seeing him with the healing item, blanket, contact with our homeroom teacher, and readiness to move was impressive.

His preparedness and ability to act were clearly that of someone familiar with the situation.

"…There are suicides at prestigious high schools and universities every year, especially in a player-only school. Before we came here, we were the 15% and considered special wherever we went."

Seong Siwan didn't directly answer my question, instead speaking vaguely.

"There are some kids who can't handle losing their uniqueness when gathered with other players."

Seong Siwan paused for a moment and cast a sideways glance at Lee Lena in my arms.

"But there must be a different reason for Lena, it's only her first day of school."

While Seong Siwan spoke, the hoverboard landed in front of the teachers' living quarters.

While waiting for Ham Geunhyeong to arrive in the waiting room, Lee Lena opened her eyes.

tl/n: warning that i spent these past months going back and trying my best to get all the terms right. i don't remember all the alterations i made but the most notable ones are:

광림(光臨) Gwanglim -> Presence

i dont romanticize any other terms that use hanja, and there's no reason for me to when romanticized terms are harder to remember than english ones

은광 Eunkwang -> Silverlight

the only reason i left this romanticized was bc i was used to reading eunkwang + my mtl trauma surrounding silver advertisement

thx for your patience during this long wait

5. Year 1, Class 0 (4)

Lee Lena blinked her unusually round eyes and writhed a little.

When she did so, I spoke to her.

"Are you okay?"

Both I, who was holding Lee Lena, and Seong Siwan, who had opened the door to the teacher's lounge, quietly watched her.

"Ah…"

Suddenly, Lee Lena's face turned blue.

When I saw her expression, I realized it.

Lee Lena had been seriously determined to die.

"Come in."

Ham Geunhyeong called us in, placing the towel draped over his head on the table.

The shower's full body dryer would've taken about three minutes to use.

I guess Ham Geunhyeong didn't want us to wait, so he just came with a towel.

Fwmph.

Lee Lena placed the blanket in the middle of the sofa across from Ham Geunhyeong.

Ham Geunhyeong's gaze moved from Lee Lena, to me, and finally to Seong Siwan.

"I just told students at the dorm it was a prank… Would it be better to explain the details later?"

"Yeah. You should dry your hair before you catch a cold."

"It's fine… Oh, thank you."

Ham Geunhyeong tossed his towel to Seong Siwan, whose hair was still a bit frozen.

Considering how Lee Lena was right now, I'd better leave.

I bowed my head and said bye to Ham Geunhyeong.

"I'll be going, goodbye."

"Go back inside, Cho Euishin. Let's talk tomorrow."

When Seong Siwan and I were about to leave the room, Lee Lena suddenly reached between her blankets and grabbed me.

"Ah?"

Her bony, slender arm helplessly held the hem of my school uniform.

"…Oh, sorry."

Lee Lena hesitated before letting go.

To me, it seemed that Lee Lena was terrified of something.

'Perhaps…'

Lee Lena's situation.

Lee Lena's parents.

The Fantasy Auction.

I looked back through things one by one and got a sense of what Lee Lena was afraid of.

'Are you afraid of adults?'

Ham Geunhyeong had the rough vibes of someone in their late 30's.

Seong Siwan was still a third year in high school, but he had the dignity befitting of the Land Wing Union's president.

On the other hand, I was a high schooler of average height who was still in a school uniform.

Out of the three, it seemed that Lee Lena was most comfortable with me.

I had to stay.

"Mr. Ham Geunhyeong, could I leave later?"

"…Okay."

Seong Siwan leaned against a wall, starting to dry his hair while he watched Lee Lena and I.

I had no intention of leaving the two dorm students here.

I sat down next to Lee Lena.

As I sat next to her, Lee Lena reached out again and grabbed the hem of my shirt.

Was she doing it unconsciously?

'Rather than Ham Geunhyeong, it'd be better for me to talk to you.'

When I gave Ham Geunhyeong a signal with my eyes, he noticed my intentions and nodded.

"Could I ask what happened? …Or would you like to go home and rest for today?"

Trying to force out answers would only backfire.

I asked carefully and left Lee Lena room to evade the question.

'Let's wait.'

For a long time, Lee Lena didn't say anything.

But Ham Geunhyeong, Seong Siwan, and I didn't urge her to speak.

We waited patiently, occasionally averting our gazes so that we didn't put any pressure on her.

"Today, my parents were permanently expelled from the Player Association…"

It was related to Lee Lena's parents?

Considering how Ham Geunhyeong covered his mouth to hide his hardened expression, he must've realized what happened.

"But it was all my fault, someone like me should've never been born."

Tears began to well up in Lee Lena's eyes.

"It was all my fault, I feel like… I don't deserve to keep living."

Lee Lena's words gradually tapered off.

The further she continued, the more I could only hear muffled sobs.

She cried before falling asleep.

After that, I entrusted Lee Lena to the first year guidance teacher for girls and left the teachers' living quarters.

Unraveling the slender hand holding the hem of my shirt felt more difficult than wrecking the Fantasy Auction.

* * *

In order to report the incident to the Land Wing Union, Seong Siwan left first.

Ham Geunhyeong followed after Seong Siwan and took me to the first year's building.

"Fantasy Gate, is it?"

Ham Geunhyeong stopped in his tracks and looked down at me.

"The only players who were recently expelled permanently from the Player Association were those involved in the Fantasy Gate."

In the game, Lee Lena was not in class 0.

Her sudden addition to the class was probably due to the Fantasy Gate.

Ham Geunhyeong spoke in a slightly firm voice.

"Lee Lena didn't even have the coin's brand of Sidelentium that the Red Barrier Phantom Thief left on the hands of participants. Additionally, she was a cooperative witness for both the police and the Association. But since her parents were a bit involved, it was decided she'd go into class 0."

The Fantasy Gate was currently the biggest scandal in the world of players.

If her parents' involvement was made known, Lee Lena would have to bear their guilt, even if she did nothing wrong.

I guessed that was what Ham Geunhyeong was worried about.

"I know there's nothing wrong with Lee Lena."

"…Okay."

Ham Geunhyeong seemed relieved by my words and smiled for the first time that day.

"You saved Lee Lena today, Cho Euishin."

Ham Geunhyeong had a fierce and bitter impression, but his smile made him seem like an ordinary teacher encouraging his students.

"If Lee Lena fell to the first floor and survived, she would've suffered from fatal pain… She would've thought of it as her punishment for not being worthy to live."

Ham Geunhyeong patted my back lightly.

"Well done, Euishin."

After Ham Geunhyeong saw me off, I arrived at my dorm room late.

It was time for me to head to the shower to get ready for bed.

However, there was something sparkling in the corner of my living room.

'This….'

It was the gold ribbon that Lee Lena was wearing.

When did it fall?

I carefully picked up her ribbon so that I wouldn't wrinkle it.

After being left on the floor for a long time, the ribbon was as cold as ice.

'Lee Lena's parents…'

There was one more thing to do.

I immediately remembered which piece to use.

* * *

The next morning, I once again jogged through Sky Wing Mountain as training while searching for Cottonball.

I ran along the Sky Wing Mountain trail at a speed several times faster than an ordinary person's sprint.

Was everyone training indoors due to the cold weather?

'I'm the only one on the trail.'

As I climbed up a little higher, I could see dorm students who chose the 'Silverlight Training Camp' moving side by side from a distance.

Silverlight High had a player training curriculum.

However, whether a student followed the curriculum was up to them.

They could freely control their leisure time and study alone.

Or, if students needed peers to put their plans into practice, they could have a more typical school life.

Silverlight High gave options for either method, allowing students to either participate or opt out.

I chose to study independently since it'd be difficult to move if I was tied to a schedule.

'It'd be easier to act if I train on my own.'

When I first came to this world, my overall stats were Lv.10.

It'd been about three months, and now it reached Lv.13.

Considering that it was the beginning of the semester and the level of first years was usually between 10 and 20, my physical ability would be average among my grade.

But due to the nature of 'Player's Vestige,' physical training was low priority.

When I used Bestowed Light, my overall stats changed according to the character.

In the first place, as my overall stat level went up, my damage threshold also increased, so there was no need to be hung up on it.

'But it'd be better to increase the number of cards I can use, just in case.'

Compared to others, my Light was varied.

I succeeded in controlling it yesterday and learned how to use a character's power without changing my appearance.

Still, if possible, I didn't want to be seen using Player's Vestige in front of other people.

'If Yoo Sanghoon finds out I'm the Red Barrier Thief, he'll make fun of me for a decade.'

Phantom Thief of the Red Barrier, a title that made it feel like my limbs and space-time itself were shrinking.

That was the biggest reason why it couldn't be revealed that it was me.

'I'm curious who the reporter who came up with the name Red Barrier Phantom Thief is.'

If possible, I'd like to give them an embarrassing title like mine.

"Cottonball, where the hell are you?"

This morning's search for Cottonball was also fruitless.

When the designated training time was over, my wearable device's alarm went off.

I headed back to the dorm to get ready for school.

* * *

Classes started at 9:00 and the morning debriefing began at 8:30.

(tl/n: "debriefing" <- 조례 is a meeting with teacher or principal where they give students some information or speech)

It was now 8 o' clock.

Currently, there was only one person in class 1-0.

"Hi!"

Kim Yuri, one of the playable characters, was the one to give a greeting first.

"Oh, hi."

When I greeted her back, Kim Yuri stood up and approached me.

Kim Yuri was much taller than the average student her age, and she seemed confident when she moved.

In the game's official illustrations, she was mainly drawn surrounded by magnolias, but they seemed to fit her well in reality too.

[Name] Kim Yuri

[Title] Silverlight Year 1, Class 0 President

[Blessing] Advice from a hidden True Clansman, 'Be a little more courageous.'

·········.

·········.

·········.

When I checked Kim Yuri's settings, I found that her Bestowed Light was sealed.

'None of her information is different from when I played the game.'

Kim Yuri fell into a state of panic after she turned 17 and experienced her Light for the first time.

She was afraid of her own Bestowed Light.

It was to the extent that she voluntarily entered class 0 and asked the Player Association to seal it. So, she periodically had the Bestowed Light Seal reapplied.

'She died while hiding it from her best friend, An Dain.'

In the end, Kim Yuri couldn't overcome her fear of her Light and died.

"I'm Kim Yuri. I look forward to working together."

"Cho Euishin, nice to meet you."

We wore name tags, so we should've already known each other's names. However, we still exchanged conventional greetings.

"Euishin, do you remember how we were going to choose the class' president and vice president yesterday? I decided to be president, but Han Yi doesn't want to be a class executive. So, I'd like to leave it to either you or Jiho. Oh, and you can be class president if you want."

She couldn't ask any other kids because they weren't here.

…Kim Yuri interacted with me in a friendly manner appropriate for first meetings.

Considering how naturally she spoke, she must've been a class executive in middle school, maybe a class president or even the student body president.

'Considering future developments, I definitely want to be either class president or vice president.'

It'd be perfect if I had a proper class executive like Kim Yuri to be my partner.

"Hwang Jiho would find being an executive bothersome. I'll be vice president."

It wasn't a lie.

Hwang Jiho, no, should I call him Hwang Myeongho?

In any case, Yellow Tiger seemed to even find the position of chairman to be bothersome.

"Wow, that's a relief. Let's spend this year working hard."

Kim Yuri said brightly.

Since class 0 was famous for its many eccentricities, she must've been worried that there'd be no one to serve as vice president.

"Euishin, tell me your device code."

"Okay. Send me your code too."

In the future, we'd be acting as class president and vice president.

It'd be convenient to know each others' contact information.

We deployed holograms to exchange codes for wearable devices and chatted while waiting for the ordinance time.

"You're 'Unknown Supernova,' right? I didn't know you would enter class 0."

"It just worked out like that."

Even I didn't know I would.

Due to my deal with Yellow Tiger, it was half-forced upon me.

'In the end, it wasn't a bad choice.'

It was physically close to class 1 and class 2, which both had major characters.

Additionally, there were a lot of characters I wanted to save in class 0.

Above all, the atmosphere in Silverlight meant I didn't need to think twice before moving. Even if I did something that wasn't student-like, they'd just say, 'class 0 is at it again.'

"I think 1-0 is really nice. Other classes have 50 people, but class 0 doesn't have more than 20. Not only is it easy to ask our homeroom teacher for help, the classroom is also spacious."

Kim Yuri seemed to really like class 0.

"Have you seen the common schedule? This morning's 'Player Combat Training 1' is a joint lesson."

Player Combat Training 1.

The first class.

In the game, the event was of little importance.

Kim Yuri continued speaking.

"Our class only has a few people, so we're sharing the lesson with classes 1 and 2."

Classes 1-1 and 1-2 had Joo Soohyeok and An Dain, the protagonists of this world.

I'd be having my first class with the main characters.

tl/n: it's everyone's least favorite mtler, back from spending way too long googling about korean grammar, chinese characters, and the color blue. basically, i spent this entire time obsessively going over old chapters to try and be as accurate as possible…. while still mtling (yeah there was a real flaw in my logic GNN)

anyways, i'm never going back to edit old chapters like that ever again. so, if u see any mistakes, leave a comment or tell me on discord.

EX Rank 19

6. First Class (1)

Dark chapter.

These words referred to a shameful past that one wished to forget.

Joo Soohyeok, the protagonist of Player Meister High School, a perfect genius who wasn't lacking in talent, personality, connections, intellect, or wealth, also had a dark chapter.

It was the day Joo Soohyeok had his first class with An Dain.

An Dain met her best friend Kim Yuri in the joint class of "Player Combat Training 1," and smiled brightly for the first time since admission.

Seeing that smile from the front, Joo Soohyeok tripped in a magnificent manner.

If it wasn't for him having the body of a player, he would've gotten a concussion or even broken a bone.

Still, even Joo Soohyeok was just a high school student, mesmerized by the smile of a woman he fell in love with at first sight.

'An Dain doesn't laugh often, so Joo Soohyeok was surprised by it. After all, polite smiles are just a subtle expression where only the corners of the mouth are raised on an otherwise cold face.'

Joo Soohyeok's tragic slapstick was broadcasted live in front of 100 people, including the woman he fell in love with.

Then, he had to battle An Dain one-on-one with his tattered state of mind.

The match resulted in a devastating defeat for Joo Soohyeok.

He suffered even more after noticing An Dain's slight confusion over his lousiness.

It was the main event of the first class, the same one that was currently about to begin.

There were five minutes before class started.

All the students in 1-0 gathered in the gym dedicated to first years, the 1st gymnasium.

Kim Yuri said the other kids in class 0 may show up to attend school, so I waited in the classroom until the dreaded time.

However, there were still only four first year class 0 students who came to school today: Hwang Jiho, Kim Yuri, Han Yi, and I.

The four of us arrived together, but as soon as we got to the gym, I pretended to be looking around and positioned myself behind Joo Soohyeok.

"Yuri!"

An Dain found Yuri Kim and greeted her.

She waved her hand, her face comparable to hundreds of flowers in full bloom all at once.

An Dain was usually praised as looking like she was carved from ice, but now her sunny smile accompanied her beauty.

The students who saw An Dain were shocked.

However, An Dain and Kim Yuri ignored it and started chatting.

Flop.

Meanwhile, before he fell, I caught Joo Soohyeok from behind.

I had no idea how he tripped, but Joo Soohyeok's feet were even in the air for a moment.

Thanks to my preparations, I avoided the catastrophe of us falling down together.

"Are you okay?"

"…Uh, sorry. I'm fine."

Joo Soohyeok, who was leaning on my shoulder, still had a stunned expression.

But even that blank face became a painting when accompanied by Joo Soohyeok's handsome face.

There were even a few students looking at the side of Joo Soohyeok's face with expressions more dazed than his.

"Are you really okay? I think you'll be fighting An Dain in today's class, your grades are the same."

"What? Oh, right. Yeah, I'm fine."

He didn't look fine at all.

The moment he heard the name An Dain, Joo Soohyeok's cheeks turned red.

Soon, he took a deep breath and began to calm down.

He'd been mesmerized by his first love, but Joo Soohyeok was one of this world's protagonists.

And now he wouldn't be in the embarrassing situation from the game.

'He's probably okay now.'

When I was about to leave Joo Soohyeok, he spoke to me.

"Thank you, Cho Euishin."

Joo Soohyeok knew my name.

It felt strange for a game's main character to say my name right in front of me.

"…You know my name?"

"I was in the test site next to yours during the practical exam. When the situation was over, I saw your face and name tag while you were heading to the hospital. I'm more surprised that you know who I am."

Without a hint of his previous absent mindedness, Joo Soohyeok spoke with a cool smile.

'He has a good memory.'

Did Joo Soohyeok memorize the names and faces of every person who passed him during that chaos?

Maybe he also remembered Jang Namwook and Yoo Sanghoon.

"There isn't a first year in this school who doesn't know you or An Dain's names."

"Hahaha, in that sense, the same goes for the Unknown Supernova.

Joo Soohyeok conversed very naturally.

He had the ability to make others feel comfortable and laugh.

'When I saw him in the game, I thought he was just a friendly guy.'

In actuality, he also possessed a magnetic charm and captivating speaking skills.

'That's why True Clansmen reached out to Joo Soohyeok without him doing anything.'

Then, the class bell began and we both stopped talking.

"It's a classical piece…"

A feast of string and wind instruments spread through the air, leaving behind a magnificent resonance.

The brass, wind ensemble, and strings created a lively melody with their harmony.

I could occasionally hear students lowering their voice to make comments, trying not to disturb others listening to the song.

"Are they playing this themselves? What's the title? I think I've heard this somewhere."

"It's Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 in D major… Wow, they even arranged the second movement."

(tl/n: yes, this is an actual song. you've probably heard some part of it before without realizing. you can listen to it here: https://youtu.be/Spx4kmY67Wc)

"It's the first class, so the strings, winds, and orchestra all gathered to perform together."

"This song is good, I should download it."

As the song progressed, talking occurred less and less.

Holograms popped up in various places as students tried to download the song.

In Silverlight, the origin of the music used for the class bell changed every hour of every day.

A music-related club that was in charge of it all.

Strings, wind ensemble, orchestra, pianos, samulnori, band, traditional Korean music, opera, choir, music compositions, etc.

(tl/n: samulnori – a genre of percussion music performed with four traditional korean musical instruments called pungmul. here's a brief example: https://youtu.be/C5QinxMF6Sg. more notes are at the end of the chapter)

As for the class bell, it could be any song that could be performed or sung.

There were times like today when it was classical, but there were also times when it was a popular or self-composed song.

There were even times when it was trot or pansori.

(tl/n: trot – to put it simply, think kpop)

(pansori – a korean musical genre of musical storytelling performed by a singer and a drummer, example: https://youtu.be/ubi5v20pvZI)

All of the bells created by students were uploaded to the Broadcasting Department of Silverlight's website.

It only rang for one minute, but the full version could be downloaded from their website.

'I should give a donation and download it.'

You could get the full version of the class bell for free, but you could also donate as much as you wanted.

One minute of class time passed, and the teachers appeared as the unfinished song faded out.

Joo Soohyeok and I, who had stopped talking to appreciate the class bell, decided to return to our respective seats.

"Euishin, see you next time."

"Yeah."

Joo Soohyeok went to where class 1 and 2 students were gathered while I headed to the place where the class 0 kids were.

* * *

As students lined up in two rows for each class, three teachers stood before the 104 kids and briefly introduced themselves.

Ham Geunhyeong, homeroom teacher of year 1, class 0.

Kim Shinrok, homeroom teacher of year 1, class 1.

Noh Yeongmi, homeroom teacher of year 1, class 2.

Ham Geunhyeong was a playable character and Noh Yeongmi was a NPC.

However, it was my first time seeing Kim Shinrok.

In the game, class 1's homeroom teacher was the trash called Choi Pyeondeuk.

His personal information didn't even show up on the exclusive menu.

The homeroom teacher of 1-1, the main heroine An Dain's class, was a very important role.

But he was an unregistered character.

'Choi Pyeondeuk is still alive, so why did the teacher change?'

After observing Kim Shinrok intently, I realized that his face was familiar somehow.

'The mortally injured supervisor who appeared in the Unnamed Side Character's Tutorial…!'

He was the near-death supervisor who shouted at us to run away during the practical exam.

'After being attacked by the Bear Clan and being seriously injured, he and the Enemy were thrown into the gymnasium. Afterwards, he died with the students taking the exam…'

Originally, class 1's homeroom teacher was supposed to be Kim Shinrok.

When he died in the game, Choi Pyeondeuk took his position.

"Hello, the first class for you newly enrolled Silverlight High School students is 'Player Combat Training 1.'"

Noh Yeongmi, the homeroom teacher for class 1-2, led the class.

"Some of you may not be interested in or even avoid fighting. Of course, a player's career path is not limited to attacking the otherworld. After graduating from Silverlight, there are students who don't join the professional player team and instead become doctors, lawyers, office workers, civil servants, or teachers like us."

Several people seemed wounded by Noh Yeongmi's words.

There were a few guys who applied to Silverlight, not because they wanted to attack the otherworld as a player, but because it was the most elite high school in Korea.

'Jang Namwook was such a case.'

Korea's education craze and the desire to improve enough to enter a prestigious high school remained even after the interworld conflict.

"But you never know when or where the otherworld will appear. Whether it's in your future office or the resort you're vacationing in, a new world gap could open and an Enemy can appear."

Noh Yeongmi continued speaking.

"Only us players can stand up to those Enemies. It's a basic skill for all players to hone their combat skills to protect themselves along with their family, friends, and neighbors."

All of these people were high school first years who just turned 17.

When they couldn't use Bestowed Light, they were in a position to be protected, even if they had excellent combat abilities.

However, upon turning 17 years old, you were approved by the association to be a player.

With Noh Yeongmi's words, they must've realized they were now doing the protecting instead of being protected.

"One of the admission requirements for Silverlight is to 'have at least one combat skill' and to 'reveal that skill.' Us teachers will do our best to improve the combat skill you have revealed to the school."

When Noh Yeongmi gestured, Ham Geunhyeong, and Kim Shinrok each pushed out carts full of item cards.

"Here are the weapon-type item cards that were prepared according to the combat skill you revealed at the time of admission. All of their rarities are R."

At those words, some students raised their hands.

"Teacher! I've personally prepared an item card."

"Me too."

R rank items didn't seem to stand out to students who could use their parents' financial resources to get personal weapons of high rarities, such as SR or SSR ranks.

However, Noh Yeongmi shook her head.

"What I want to check today is your pure fighting skills."

It was only natural for the homeroom teachers to have an accurate grasp of their students' combat abilities. After all, they would be the ones leading their class for a year.

The reason lessons were conducted with two or more classes was to understand the relative abilities and levels of students when using their base abilities.

It was due to how party play was a basic skill for attacking the otherworld.

Noh Yeongmi had an openly dissatisfied expression, but she spoke firmly.

"Each class' teacher will now hand out item cards. When distribution is over, we'll convene again."

* * *

I didn't want to reveal my skills.

Exclusive menu? Destiny? Communication?

I might be the only person in the world with those skills.

As soon as it's revealed, my only future would be one where the Player Association or government forces me to become a test subject.

However, it was a standard rule in Silverlight to reveal one or more combat skills.

'There's only one skill that I can reveal.'

It was also the only combat skill I had.

The skill I disclosed was 'Versatility,' which allowed me to use all weapons and armor.

"Are these all yours? Woah!"

Kim Yuri said with a surprised face.

Most students received one card.

'This is a lot.'

I was given 300 cards.

There was a buzz around me as people saw me holding a plastic case full of item cards.

Hwang Jiho, who was holding an item card right next to me, also gazed at me with his twinkling eyes.

"The Versatility skill is rare even among the True Clan. How awesome, Cho Euishin."

Since he already saw the documents I submitted to the school, he would've already known in advance.

Yellow Tiger was good at acting.

He was so shameless that even after living for over 5,000 years, he could still mix in with students and pretend to be 17.

"Actually, I wanted to let you try out all the weapons in existence. But since it's my first time having a student with Versatility, this was all I could prepare."

Ham Geunhyeong looked into the case full of cards with regretful eyes.

"Since your skill level is still 1, you have to use various weapons to try and raise it…"

"Skill level 1? What bullshit."

A loud voice was heard from year 1, class 2.

tl/n: The definition of traditional Korean music is hard for me to pin down (and ofc it is, music definitions are vry subjective smtms) (one definition i found even says that kpop technically counts HELP) However, i'm p sure the stuff the author is talking about includes hyangak (folk dances n stuff), aak (ancient chinese court music), and dangak (ancient chinese folk music). Pls note that while i called the latter two "chinese," it's been deep rooted in korea for so long that it's still just korean music with a chinese origin. You can kinda (emphasis on kinda) get a gist of how it sounds by listening to this: https://youtu.be/paBWJ3pkRmE

that is the most complex class bell i have ever read about in my entire life. i literally spent an hour googling trying to understand traditional korean music.

n e ways, see you next chapter.

tl/n: changed euishin's player alias "nameless supernova" to "unknown supernova," nameless was the literal tl of the term, but unknown is more accurate to the actual meaning (i think)

6. First Class (2)

The gym became quiet, as if cold water had been poured on it.

The words of undisguised malice towards me continued.

"I thought he'd be great since he got 300 item cards, but it's just some shitty level 1 skill."

The person speaking was a student in year 1, class 2.

When I saw his face, I was surprised.

'The extra who got absolutely annihilated after picking a fight with Joo Soohyeok.'

At the end of his first year, he reflected on his trivial misdeeds and became friends with Joo Soohyeok. However, then he was possessed by a demon-type Enemy, grinding Joo Soohyeok's mental state into powder.

And the person who was speaking against me was that very extra.

[Name] Bang Yoonseop

[Title] Silverlight Year 1, Class 2 Student

[Blessing] A certain Snake Clansman cheers, 'That foolishness is your charm.'

[Bestowed Light] (Inactive)

[Status] Normal

[Overall Ability] Lv.13

[Skills]

Nunchaku Lv.3

Unnerving Shout Lv.1

················································································.

················································································.

················································································.

'The information is the same as the NPC extra's I saw in the setting book.'

In the game, Joo Soohyeok had Bang Yoonseop pick a fight with him right after his dark chapter.

Being embarrassed in front of his crush put him in a bad mood.

So, Joo Soohyeok didn't pay any attention to him.

'The player is the one who controlled Joo Soohyeok to win against Bang Yoonseop.'

Bang Yoonseop fought Joo Soohyeok, but was completely annihilated, getting devastated from head to toe.

It would've happened during class 1-2's solo combat training class next week.

'Joo Soohyeok's dark chapter is gone, so there's no room to belittle him. Instead, he aimed for me, the Unknown Supernova.'

I, Cho Euishin, was famous as the Unknown Supernova.

However, I was in class 1-0, the place where problematic children were gathered.

Also, my combat skill was level 1.

I was a celebrity to some extent, but there was still room to make jabs at me.

'Do you think you'll be treated like a tough guy if you can suppress the Unknown Supernova with only a few words?'

Today was the only time he'd have a joint class with class 0.

If he was going to aim for me, he'd have to start an argument today.

So, he actually changed targets from Joo Soohyeok to me.

"Bang Yoonseop, am I the one you're taking to right now?"

When I was able to call out his name, Bang Yoonseop suppressed a gasp.

He wanted to insult me, but he also didn't want me to hold a grudge.

He hid in the crowd and acted cowardly, but got embarrassed the moment I said his name.

However, Bang Yoonseop feigned confidence and shouted at me.

"Y-Yeah! Did I say something wrong, you bastard?"

The gym started buzzing.

No one would think such a blockhead would be at Silverlight, Korea's most prestigious high school.

Unfortunately, there is something called the Law of Conservation of Mass.

A blockhead was sure to exist in every group.

I could see the teachers' expressions hardening, Ham Geunhyeong's having changed first.

'How should I do this?'

Bang Yoonseop.

Joo Soohyeok.

Combat training class.

Versatility.

Future developments.

A good idea came to mind.

Before Ham Geunhyeong could say anything, I raised my hand.

"Aren't we going to fight each other today? For the first match, I'd like it to be me and Bang Yoonseop."

Due to my words, people began to murmur loudly

I quietly added something, making sure only Ham Geunhyeong could hear it.

"If I fight Bang Yoonseop, it'll serve as a good example."

Ham Geunhyeong looked at me with a thoughtful gaze.

"Cho Euishin, do you know the intention of today's class?"

"Yes."

Ham Geunhyeong seemed to mull over my words as he gazed at me intently.

A few seconds later, he chuckled.

"Good job, Cho Euishin."

Kim Shinrok and Noh Yeongmi, who'd been onlooking Ham Geunhyeong and I's brief exchange, nodded slightly. It seemed like they guessed what was going on.

When the three teachers made gestures to express their condonment of the fight, shouts of 'oooh!' erupted.

"Isn't he Cho Euishin, the Unknown Supernova?"

"Didn't Mr. Ham Geunhyeong say Cho Euishin has the Versatility skill?"

"They said on TV that it was one of the top 5 rare skills people would want to have. I think it has something to do with the number of cards you get."

The students began to predict the outcome of the confrontation between Bang Yoonseop and I.

"Bang Yoonseop is a blackhead, but the level of his combat skill is pretty high… I don't know what'll happen."

"The Unknown Supernova is level 1, and their overall stats seem to be the same. No matter how many weapon items you can use, a higher skill level is always better."

"Can I bet on this? I'll put 10,000 won on Bang Yoonseop."

(tl/n: 10,000 won is roughly a few dollars less than 10 USD, so feel free to use that conversion rate for the rest of this chapter)

I didn't know who started it, but the gym was noisy with chatter about bets.

Soon, someone began moderating bets and ran an application for it on their hologram, the access code to join popping up on their screen.

"I'm putting 3,000 won on Bang Yoonseop."

"I've got 15,000 won for Bang Yoonseop."

"I'm betting 40,000 won on Cho Euishin."

"Placing 100,000 won on Bang Yoonseop! Good luck, dude!"

They used the access code to transfer money from their bank accounts.

People didn't get this worked up even when Joo Soohyeok and An Dain had their first match.

The teachers didn't participate in the betting, but they also just spectated without stopping the students.

They already knew what the outcome would be.

Their only concern was how to use the results for class.

'If it's just to this extent, it'll be treated as brief entertainment rather than gambling. It'll be fine if they don't stop it. Also, it'll be a good lesson for the students.'

The total amount of money wagered by the students began to grow.

I tried to bet on Bang Yoonseop, but it didn't go through.

"One million won for Cho Euishin."

An overwhelmingly large bet from one of the students rendered the gym silent.

It was Yoo Sanghoon.

Come to think of it, he was in class 1-1.

I came to the gym late, so I ended up being too busy talking with Joo Soohyeok to say hi.

"Can't you see Cho Euishin's expression? If you don't want to lose money, bet in moderation."

Yoo Sanghoon looked at me and smiled meaningfully. Then, he pulled up a hologram and immediately transferred the money.

Yoo Sanghoon's confident attitude stirred up the crowd again.

"He survived in the same exam group as the Unknown Supernova."

"The one who was caught in the trap during the Son Bait incident…"

"Then he must be familiar with the Unknown Supernova. I'm getting nervous."

Meanwhile, Hwang Jiho seemed like he was itching to do something. Apparently, his hologram displaying a balance full of zeros was troubling him.

"Is it worth it to bet 10 million won?"

"…You'll be charged with gambling if you bet too much money, so be careful."

"So what?"

There he goes, saying 'So what?' again.

I moved away from him.

Hwang Jiho grumbled with a dissatisfied expression, but he stopped himself before actually saying anything.

It seemed like the betting pool had already grown sufficiently, so I wanted to prevent the number of digits from rising.

Players were treated somewhat generously because of the special laws surrounding them, so it should be fine.

"What? Fuck… It shouldn't be like this…"

Bang Yoonseop was just a small fry who wanted to pick a fight, relieve some stress, and elevate his position a little.

He must've been terrified by such an oversized playing board.

'If you're going to make a face like that, why did you pick a fight in the first place?'

Then, Bang Yoonseop came up with a good idea.

He suddenly changed his expression and shouted loudly.

"Let's limit the number of weapons we're allowed to use in the spar to one. Also, using Bestowed Light is banned!"

Several people let out exasperated sighs at Bang Yoonseop's distasteful suggestion.

'How cowardly.'

Bang Yoonseop's Nunchaku skill level was 3.

My Versatility skill level was 1.

Our overall stat levels were both at 13.

If you just looked at skill levels, I couldn't win.

I was already at a disadvantage, but then he also banned Light.

'It's no problem.'

There was no need to worry.

"Okay."

When I readily agreed, Bang Yoonseop's expression became triumphant. He was acting as if he already won.

A few people who bet on me almost walked out because of my response.

But then, I took out a card from my inventory and materialized it.

"If we fight on your terms, the loser has to spend a year as the other person's bread shuttle… no, errand runner. How about it?"

(tl/n: bread shuttle is the literal tl of slang used for the dedicated student that school gangs bully into buying them snacks, cigarettes, etc.)

The item I took out was the R rank 'Fire Tongs of Promise.'

It was one of the item cards I bought before school started.

If you broke a promise made with the Fire Tongs of Promise, all your nails would be pulled out by tongs that'd been heated in flames.

However, the rarity was low since you'd just lose your nails if you broke the promise.

It'd be extremely painful, but that wouldn't matter much to a player with a healing item.

'But for a coward like Bang Yoonseop, this is enough.'

He probably wouldn't be willing to have all his nails pulled out by fire tongs.

"A bread shuttle match!"

"The Unknown Supernova shot back."

The first years were even more excited by my suggestion.

"Fire Tongs of Promise…!"

Bang Yoonseop muttered with a nervous expression.

Since the Fire Tongs of Promise were such a famous item, he recognized it right away.

"Did you think I'd get scared and back off? But no, let's do it!"

Flare-

After Bang Yoonseop finished his cocky statement, the Fire Tongs of Promise were set on fire before dissipating into the air.

All of Bang Yoonseop and I's nails turned red for a moment before reverting to their original color.

With that, the bread shuttle match was established.

* * *

There were only three people betting on me.

Yoo Sanghoon, Joo Soohyeok, and Kim Yuri.

Yoo Sanghoon betting on me wasn't surprising, but Joo Soohyeok and Kim Yuri doing it was.

When Joo Soohyeok saw Yoo Sanghoon bet 1 million won, he bet the same amount.

Joo Soohyeok was the great-grandson of the head of the Chuo Group, one of the four largest conglomerates in Korea.

He didn't have common sense with money, so he just copied Yoo Sanghoon.

Yoo Sanghoon bet 1 million won since his parents gave him a lot of pocket money to pay for meals whenever he met up with Jang Namwook and I.

'Kim Yuri surprised me.'

She didn't seem like the type of person to participate in such a bet, but she was still staying loyal to people in her class.

There was a total of 2,050,000 won bet on me.

There was a total of 2,478,000 won bet on Bang Yoonseop.

Additionally, there were people who didn't participate at all, such as An Dain, Hwang Jiho, and Han Yi. However, it was still quite a lot of money.

"Come on, you two."

"Woooo!"

Cheering was heard from the approximately 100 students seated in the simple spectator seats installed in the 1st gymnasium.

Using a device's hologram expansion mode, a screen with the betting app was flashing brightly in the air.

[Bread Shuttle Match]

[Unknown Supernova, Cho Euishin VS Unknown Challenger, Bang Yoonseop]

I wondered who entered those words into the betting app.

Accompanying it to heighten the mood was the song 'Going The Distance' from Rocky's OST.

The song was famous, but the bet was about a dumb fight over someone acting like an blockhead. Was it okay to use such a masterpiece as background music for the bread shuttle match?

"When I signal to start, materialize your item cards and begin the match."

The referee was Kim Shinrok, class 1-1's homeroom teacher.

I was in class 0 and Bang Yoonseop was in class 2, so it was probably judged that Kim Shinrok, a neutral party, should be the referee.

I picked up one of my 300 cards and stood in my spot.

Step, step.

Bang Yoonseop and I stood facing each other from about 10m away.

The background music was changed from 'Going the Distance' to 'Gonna Fly Now.'

"Then, get ready."

"Woooo!"

"Go, Bang Yoonseop!"

"Bang Yoonseop, become a victorious blockhead!"

Bang Yoonseop looked like he was dying of joy as he thought of his future reputation boost and treatment as a hero.

Kim Shinrok signaled with the raise of his hand.

"Start!"

The item card in Bang Yoonseop's hand changed into nunchaku.

"Oraaa!"

Bang Yoonseop let out a shout as he rushed forward with his nunchaku.

I also materialized my item card.

As I held the materialized weapon in my hand, I heard a system notification.

"Wait, no way, isn't that a magic weapon?"

A startled voice was heard from the audience.

Yes way.

I swung the 'Novice Wizard's Terrain Rod,' a R rank basic magic weapon with an earth attribute.

I naturally grasped magic spells, mana operation formulas, and their effects due to my Versatility skill.

"It's magic!"

"Wow, wow!"

Very few players could use magic.

Unlike Yeom Joonyeol's flame manipulation and Sawol Seeum's wind arts, magic was a skill that required a magical weapon.

You memorize how to cast spells in the designated language while managing mana through magic formulas.

There was no way to instinctively use magic, it was the result of logic and research.

'Magic is different from other abilities, it's more akin to math.'

Additionally, it was one of the hardest things to acquire skills for and level up.

Magic was considered to be impossible to use without the help of the True Clan or higher being related to magic.

'Even in the advanced section of this world's exam book, it was still only mentioned sparsely. However, it's natural for someone who played the game to understand magic since it's one of the skills used by playable characters.'

Magical weapons were still weapons.

Since my skill let me use all weapons, it only made sense that I could also use magic.

"Terracia Ico!"

Pow pow pow-!

As soon as the short spell I memorized was cast, earth magic hit Bang Yoonseop's eyes.

He hastily swung his nunchaku, but it was impossible for him to keep up with the magic's activation speed.

Level 1 magic was not very powerful, but it could be aimed at your eyes to blind you.

"Aaah! My eyes… my eyes!"

Bang Yoonseop struggled with the pain of dirt hitting his face and eyes.

I immediately shortened my distance from Bang Yoonseop and hit his head with the rod.

Smack!

Bang Yoonseop's scream accompanied the sound of impact.

And with that, the suppression is over.

But…

'I'll feel regretful if I only hit him once.'

I hit Bang Yoonseop, who was about to collapse to the gym floor, one more time.

How about I hit the ugly bloke again?

In the first place, I liked the idea of beating up an ugly bloke more than I needed to.

Smaack!

"Aaah!"

After having the rod hit the exact same place as before, Bang Yoonseop was completely downed.

I stepped on his back, pointed the rod at him, and turned to the referee, Kim Shinrok.

Kim Shinrok raised his hand high and shouted.

"Cho Euishin wins!"

The gym was filled with cheers from Kim Shinrok's declaration.

"Wooooo!"

"Awesome, it's my first time actually seeing magic!"

"Ah… a magic weapon… that was an option."

"That skill is a scam."

"Aah, my 100,000 won!"

Bang Yoonseop's name was removed from the betting app's screen

Instead, the words 'Unknown Supernova, Cho Euishin Wins!' were displayed in large letters.

"You…. fucking bastard. To use magic… what a cowardly bastard…!"

Bang Yoonseop said with tears streaming down his eyes.

Ham Geunhyeong spoke up before I could say anything.

"Bang Yoonseop, do you really think Cho Euishin is a coward?"

Bang Yoonseop was rendered silent by Ham Geunhyeong's question.

"Don't you think it's cowardly to demean others while hiding in a crowd? How about imposing a weapon limit on someone with Versatility?"

Ham Geunhyeong didn't look angry or shocked.

Instead, his attitude was that of a teacher explaining something obvious to a student.

"Don't you know why us teachers allowed such a fight?"

Ham Geunhyeong immediately hit on another point.

Bang Yoonseop remained confused and silent, only rubbing his eyes while bowing his head.

The other students also became quiet.

It seemed that the person who established the bet was also paying attention.

They immediately turned off the background music and holograms.

"Everyone here was accepted into Silverlight, you're all talented and know how to work hard. Each person will also have their own beliefs and pride, but those may sometimes be a poison. Among other things, players need to be humble and remain alert when faced with the unknown."

Caution towards the unknown and humility.

Those were the virtues the teachers wanted to instill during these excellent, elite high school students' first class.

If it wasn't for Bang Yoonseop and I, they would've used Joo Soohyeok and An Dain for the lesson since they were competing on a whole other level.

'It failed in the game because Joo Soohyeok had his dark chapter in front of An Dain.'

Ham Geunhyeong's words continued.

"Look at the 'Naejangsa Incident in Naejangsan National Park' and 'The Tragedy of Seokchon Lake' that both occurred a few years ago. It's a well-known fact that the rarity and overall stats of the Enemies that wiped out top ranking teams wasn't very high."

(tl/n: naejangsa, naejangsan, not a mistake)

There was a heavy silence among the students, who only now realized the teachers' intentions.

"A moment of inattention could decide the life or death of a player. How could you lack vigilance towards the Unknown Supernova, someone who has the SSR rank skill Versatility and has subjugated a R+ rank wanted Enemy with practically nothing?"

Ham Geunhyeong had a fierce impression, so students got nervous even when he was speaking calmly.

He slowly looked around the group of excited students.

Dozens of kids bowed their heads or avoided his gaze.

If someone bet too much money on Bang Yoonseop, that meant they underestimated me. So, there were a lot of people directly pierced by his statement.

Finally, Ham Geunhyeong added something.

"Bang Yoonseop. You and Cho Euishin fought fair and square… No, you were cowardly and still lost. Take responsibility for what you said and spend a year doing what Cho Euishin tells you to. And do it properly."

The silence continued.

The mood seemed to have cooled even more due to the contrast with the previously heated atmosphere.

'Should I step forward to change the mood?'

But something interrupted my thoughts.

Clap clap clap!

"You fought well, Cho Euishin!"

Yoo Sanghoon yelled as he clapped for me.

Joo Soohyeok followed after Yoo Sanghoon and began applauding. Then, the three 1-0 students followed suit.

In the end, all the other students noticed and joined in.

Wooooo-!

Suddenly, cheers and applause for me filled the gym.

There were also a few people calling out things to me.

"I lost money, but it's just like paying for an expensive class. It was nice to see your magic, Unknown Supernova!"

"Cho Euishin, please use other kinds of magic later!"

After the cheers and applause died out, Bang Yoonseop got off the floor.

He'd been lying on the floor, but was no longer crying, so it seemed like all the dirt was out of his eyes.

Bang Yoonseop alternated his resentful gaze between me and his nails.

Now he was a bread shuttle.

tl/n euishin is so cool wtf.

but rmbr kids, gambling is bad and gacha is evil!!

sidenote, ty to the 45 ppl who voted on the poll ab this series' name. results are 64.44% in favor of shortening it and 33.33% against it.

since it was a bit closer than i thought it'd be and idw to mess with novelupdates too much since i barely understand how auto approval works, i just put ex rank side character's school replay (which is a bit different from the thing i put on the poll, but the term "supporting role" is misleading imo) as one of the series's alternate names on its page. i'll b referring to it by its shortened name from now on.

if anyone feels rlly strongly ab it needing to be shortened, feel free to just change it yourself (i think youll have to contact novelupdates staff for it tho gn)

EX Rank 21

tl/n: Cho Euisin -> Cho Euishin

Kim Sinrok -> Kim Shinrok

thank you all for your patience with me.

6. First Class (3)

Yoo Sanghoon suggested using the money he earned from the bet to buy snacks.

Joo Soohyeok and Kim Yuri also agreed to it.

The teachers and people who placed bets both welcomed the idea.

And so, class ended 30 minutes earlier than scheduled.

The losers who bet on Bang Yoonseop took hoverboards to the main gate to pick up the food they ordered in advance.

"For you to bet 1 million won, what were you counting on?"

"I was counting on you."

Yoo Sanghoon answered while eating a Chicago deep dish pizza topped with prawns and spicy chicken.

The kids were seated together in a group.

Around me were my three supporters, Yoo Sanghoon, Joo Soohyeok, and Kim Yuri, as well as the 1-0 students Hwang Jiho and Han Yi.

"Joo Soohyeok, why did you bet on me?"

"It's difficult to block magic if you don't prepare armor or consumable items beforehand. Even with a high resistance, you won't be able to stop it. So, I knew Euishin would definitely win."

It seemed that Joo Soohyeok knew exactly what I was aiming for.

Perhaps the reason why teachers and a few top students like An Dain didn't bet was because they also assumed I'd use a magic weapon.

'As expected of the teachers and elites of Silverlight.'

The ability to use Versatility or magic weapons was rare.

Me and Bang Yoonseop's bet was spontaneous, so people had a very short time to decide who to bet on.

'But he heard Versatility and immediately thought of magic weapons within that short period.'

Finally, when I looked at Kim Yuri, who smiled.

"I wasn't thinking of magic weapons. Still, I didn't think the Unknown Supernova would pick a fight he couldn't win."

After answering, Kim Yuri ate a piece of boneless garlic roasted chicken with a plastic fork.

Hwang Jiho didn't participate in the bet, but his satisfied expression as he chewed tandoori chicken suggested he had quite enjoyed the class' spar.

"Cho Euishin, if you didn't stop me, I would've bet on you too."

"Okay. Thanks, Hwang Jiho."

I wasn't actually all that thankful.

Meanwhile, Han Yi was silently sitting next to Hwang Jiho while eating gorgonzola pizza dipped in honey.

'Hwang Jiho and Han Yi didn't participate in the bet, but they were among those who immediately started clapping for me.'

There wasn't really any need for them to tell me they were on my side.

The old-fashioned, oily chicken seemed particularly sweet today.

When discussion of the betting match with Bang Yoonseop started to die down, Kim Yuri brought up something else.

"Hey, Soohyeok, your fight with Dain was amazing. It was my first time seeing someone push her that far."

Joo Soohyeok choked the moment he heard the name 'Dain.'

Fortunately, there was no accident in which coke was spewed.

Instead, Joo Soohyeok just gagged a bit before swallowing.

I prevented Joo Soohyeok's black history, but he almost made a new one.

Was An Dain's smile still lingering in his mind?

I assisted Joo Soohyeok by saying something to redirect attention away from him.

"Yeah, I didn't know they could both use branch skills."

Branch skills were combat skills that had uniquely evolved to fit their user's personal style.

The geniuses Joo Soohyeok and An Dain already possessed branch skills before enrolling at school.

During the second half of his first year, the great star player Yeom Joonyeol got his branch skill, remote ignition, from flame manipulation.

"You and An Dain fought really well."

The class continued even after the betting match between Bang Yoonseop and I.

The teachers pit Joo Soohyeok and An Dain against each other.

"Hahaha, I was lucky to get away with a draw. Dain is strong."

"Right? I've never won against her."

After being picked out to fight, Joo Soohyeok dual wielded swords while An Dain held a rifle.

The spar began the instant they were given the signal.

Joo Soohyeok threw one of his swords at An Dain's vital point to prevent her from loading bullets.

As An Dain deflected the sword with her gun's barrel, Joo Soohyeok lowered his body, narrowed the distance, and went for her solar plexus.

'Then, An Dain's branch skill activated.'

The cheat-like branch skill of An Dain's shooting skill allowed her to use her entire body as a gun.

She shot a bullet from her fingertips, aiming directly at Joo Soohyeok's forehead.

However, he immediately blocked the bullet with his remaining wooden sword.

In the meantime, An Dain raised her gun and went to jab Joo Soohyeok's neck.

'But An Dain isn't the only one with cheat skills.'

Most of the audience thought the match had already been decided.

However, the wooden sword Joo Soohyeok threw in the beginning magically returned to his hand, allowing him to block the gun's barrel.

It was the work of 'Two Blades, One Body,' the branch skill of Joo Soohyeok's dual sword wielding skill.

Activating the skill ignored physics and causality, returning Joo Soohyeok's dual swords to his hands.

No one could take their eyes off the pair's battle, they looked as if they were engaging in a sword dance.

"It was difficult to follow. Everything happened quickly, and each attack aimed at a vital point was sharp."

Yoo Sanghoon also gave compliments, evidently impressed with the match between the two.

Meanwhile, Kim Yuri looked regretful.

"It's a pity that Bestowed Light was banned and there was a ten minute time limit for the spar. It ended with a draw this time, but I wonder what'll happen if they fought seriously."

"The 1st gym would be destroyed."

It had already been damaged by the spar.

There were players on campus with restoration-related abilities, so it was still at a manageable level.

However, if Joo Soohyeok and An Dain fought sincerely, the gym would be decimated to an extent that it's unsalvageable by restoration skills.

"So what? It doesn't matter."

What the hell was Hwang Jiho talking about?

A gym with player-related facilities wouldn't just cost a penny or two.

"Hwang Jiho, eat pizza."

In order to keep Hwang Jiho's mouth shut, I offered him a slice of the deep dish pizza Yoo Sanghoon selected.

Hwang Jiho received the pizza with sparkling eyes.

'Hwang Jiho can't be discovered as the chairman just because he spouts nonsense. And even if he's caught, it'll have nothing to do with me.'

Still, Hwang Jiho was going to be with me for a year as my classmate.

I didn't want people to note down the guy next to me as a weirdo.

But since we were in class 0, we were already considered problem children.

"This is delicious."

"Is that so? Drink cola, too."

"Bottoms up."

Hwang Jiho accepted everything with sparkling eyes and ate.

I'd have to continue feeding him to keep his mouth shut.

He did a good job eating whatever I gave him.

And when he was eating, his mouth was closed.

'He doesn't mind if the gym collapses? We view money differently.'

According to the building laws of this world, facilities for players needed a high load limit and high strength. So, the cost to construct them was enormous.

If it was the gym for a specialized player high school, construction would also require the use of items and abilities.

It'd take several times more money and time than building a regular gym.

"Hwang Jiho, would you like some pickles too?"

"No, give me another slice of deep dish pizza."

"Yeah, eat a lot."

It seemed like Hwang Jiho had completely abandoned any awareness of being the chairman.

The Hwangmyeong Foundation had a lot of money, so it might be okay.

"Oh, the bell rang."

"Where have I heard this before?"

The class bell that signaled the end of class was 'Triumphal March' from Giuseppe Verdi's opera, 'Aida.'

(tl/n: for listening purposes: https://youtu.be/l3w4I-KElxQ)

In the opera, Triumphal March was used to celebrate the victory of the Egyptian army.

'It's the perfect song to end the bread shuttle match.'

It may be a simple coincidence, but for me, it was a glorious song selection.

The first class I experienced in Silverlight, Player Combat Training 1.

With the exception of Bang Yoonseop, everyone was satisfied, including the True Clansmen.

* * *

After the first class, which lasted all morning, it was time for lunch.

Most of the students, their stomachs already filled with chicken and pizza, dispersed to take a break.

Meanwhile, I followed Bang Yoonseop.

"Fuck… Why me…"

He lost to me.

A teacher even scolded him.

He was also subject to the grievances of students who lost the bet.

Bang Yoonseop's mind was exhausted.

It was all his fault, though.

"Why am I the bread shuttle for someone like Cho Euishin… Cough, cough."

We were in the most isolated location of the first year's area.

Bang Yoonseop was sitting in the corner, smoking a cigarette.

The fact he couldn't even smoke without coughing was really unsightly.

"What do you mean? You lost."

I jumped out of the shade, precisely kicking the cigarette in Bang Yoonseop's hand.

Drop-

The cigarette butt left his hand, soared into the sky, and fell to the floor.

"Ack, Cho Euishin!"

Bang Yoonseop was startled, falling backwards onto his butt.

I guess he didn't realize I was trailing him.

I spoke while stomping on the fallen cigarette.

"Keep your promise, Bang Yoonseop."

"H-H-Huh? What the hell… are you going to make me do?!"

A few hours after meeting Bang Yoonseop, a certain scene kept popping up in my mind.

'He was trembling while shouting at Joo Soohyeok to kill him.'

I couldn't forget the final sacrifice that Bang Yoonseop made.

He was a pathetic and terrible guy, but he was still a guy who redeemed himself.

"You must enter 'Silverlight's training curriculum.'"

"What?"

Bang Yoonseop's idiotic goal was to make a fuss at Silverlight High School, a place where hard working students gathered.

However, this pathetic guy didn't even have the courage to commit to a proper derailment.

He just skipped classes.

'It's the only thing he can do since his attendance won't affect him. Silverlight just requires you to take exams properly.'

Due to his weak mind and body, he was possessed by a demon and had his body stolen.

"You're too weak to be a match for me. So, participate in Silverlight's training curriculum. If you defeat me even once, I'll cancel this 'oath.'"

I said, pointing to Bang Yoonseop's nails.

Even if he had all his nails pulled out right now, he still wouldn't have the guts to disobey me.

Bang Yoonseop looked down at his fingernails and shouted in annoyance.

"Oh, I can do that! Fuck… Don't forget that you'll release me if I win!"

Bang Yoonseop muttered as he got up to leave.

Before he left, I added an important remark.

"I'm going to order bread shuttles whenever I see you smoking."

"What?!"

"Buy bread and milk at the third year's canteen."

I smiled and held out 5,000 won for him.

Smoking made his stamina drop.

So, he had to train to balance it out.

Also, Bang Yoonseop was still my bread shuttle.

"Why me?!"

"You don't want to?"

It seemed like the Tongs of Promise sensed a breach of contract, because Bang Yoonseop's fingernails burned red.

He groaned and took the 5,000 won I offered him.

"You can't use a hoverboard. Ride your bike."

"Argh! The third year's area is far away!"

"Would you like to run?"

"Cho Euishin, you son of a bitch!"

Bang Yoonseop cycled away on his bike, disappearing toward the third year's section of the school.

Since I could still hear the sound of my name from afar, it seemed like he was riding his bike while swearing at me.

'If you do that, rumors will spread that you've become my bread shuttle. Idiot.'

After confirming that Bang Yoonseop had completely disappeared from view, I looked up at a nearby oak tree.

That tree was the only place nearby they could be hiding.

They must've been watching from up there.

"Come down, you two."

Two people who were standing on the oak tree's branch, which was well over 10m off the ground, jumped off.

Step-

The pair landed lightly on the ground.

One was Noh Yeongmi, class 2's homeroom teacher, and the other was Joo Soohyeok.

"How did you know?"

"Haha, I got caught."

Both of them had humbled expressions.

"I reckoned there were people worried about Bang Yoonseop."

I thought Joo Soohyeok and Noh Yeongmi would definitely follow me due to their personalities.

"I was going to stop it if you asked for something serious, but I'm sorry for doubting you."

Joo Soohyeok noticed my intentions and immediately apologized.

But there was nothing to apologize for.

"It's okay, I don't mind. I'm going to make him into my bread shuttle."

They seemed to have already figured it out, but I put my intentions into words.

"Bang Yoonseop has the ability to enroll into Silverlight as well as a drive to improve. If you give him a chance and get him back on track, he'll become a good player."

In the game, Bang Yoonseop died right after he got motivated.

Hearing my words, Noh Yeongmi smiled faintly.

Although she looked cold, she was a very kind woman.

"Please take good care of Bang Yoonseop."

About ten minutes after the pair disappeared, Bang Yoonseop arrived while sweating profusely.

He kindly encouraged me to eat all the bread and milk he bought.

He didn't eat much at the gym, so Bang Yoonseop was probably hungry.

Also, I was a little suspicious of the food he got.

"Eat it."

"Why?! Fuck…"

Bang Yoonseop wept while alternating his gaze between his fingernails, the bread, and the milk.

However, he didn't want his fingernails to be pulled out, so he eventually jumped up from his seat while eating.

"Cho Euishin, you Enemy bastard!"

Bang Yoonseop screamed desperately as he ran towards the bathroom.

As suspected, he must've put something in the bread and milk on his way here.

If you mess with food, you deserve punishment.

I let out a sigh at Bang Yoonseop's childlike actions.

'Bang Yoonseop is far away from getting out of his position as bread shuttle.'

I should think about how to put Bang Yoonseop to work for a year.

* * *

There are many good teachers in Silverlight High School.

A prime example was Jegal Jaegeol, the head of the Department of Education.

There was also Ham Geunhyeong, the director of the student body and homeroom teacher of class 1-0.

At the time of the entrance exam, Kim Shinrok, class 1-1's homeroom teacher, shouted at students to run away even as he was dying.

Noh Yeongmi, 1-2's homeroom teacher, trailed me out of worry for her student.

They all did such things.

'There were a lot of great teachers in the game.'

However, the Law of Conservation of Mass also applied to the teachers.

Choi Pyeondeuk, the teacher right before my eyes, was a typical example.

"You young kids are only good at studying. You don't even know what a really good class is, huh?"

Choi Pyeondeuk's class was only assigned to first years.

It was because his class was notorious among second and third years, so no one picked it.

"What the hell, prohibiting solicitation and acceptance of money or valuables! In the old days, students and teachers exchanged gifts and helped each other out of mutual affection. There was such a deep bond, but a bunch of clueless people have forbidden it."

Even in this world, there was a law enacted about ten years ago that made bribes illegal. That included improper solicitation, accepting money, etc.

Choi Pyeondeuk, who had been enjoying bribes for a long time, was very angry about it.

"I don't care about that law, feel free to show your sincerity to your teacher. This is something between student and teacher! It's only natural."

Choi Pyeondeuk indirectly requested bribes.

'He's avoiding being direct so that he can't be held accountable with a recording.'

Most students noticed Choi Pyeondeuk's unusual temperament as a teacher.

The more he spoke, the more the expressions of the unknowing first years in class darkened.

In Silverlight, you could change your elective classes throughout March.

During recess, many students would escape, giving up this class to replace it with another.

"Those seniors you revere highly! The player teams Red Lion, Eternal Lake, Air Society, White Tempest, Black Wind Forest, and Hydrangea Aroma are all my students!"

He shouted proudly.

In Silverlight, students usually went through hundreds of teachers.

Choi Pyeondeuk was just one of them, so I had no idea what he was talking about.

"Treat me well, okay? I can put in a good word for you with your seniors."

On Choi Pyeondeuk's hand, there were still faint stab marks.

It was from the stigma of Sidelentium's Pure Silver Coin of Silent Oath I left during the Fantasy Auction with the power of Yeom Joonyeol.

'To remove it, he would've needed to either use an expensive scar removal item or carve out the branded flesh before healing it.'

Choi Pyeondeuk was also a player.

It seemed that he had the willpower to cut off his own flesh.

"I'm very familiar with a lot of high ranking people."

Choi Pyeondeuk was often referred to as an "unjudged villain."

He committed heinous deeds, but was fortunate enough to survive until the last minute without taking any responsibility for his actions.

Choi Pyeondeuk was an NPC who survived up to the final chapter and was presumed to even persist afterwards.

"It only makes sense to trust and follow your teacher in the sacred classroom, you know?"

Choi Pyeondeuk in the game worked with the Bear Clan during the entrance exam, resulting in the death of the teacher Kim Shinrok and four students.

As a descendant of the royal family, he discovered April Seeum's identity and sold him to the Fantasy Auction for a profit.

Additionally, he dropped a student into the depths of despair.

'He was called the trash of Silverlight High School.'

After receiving a bribe, he fabricated the results of special screenings to enroll unqualified students.

Those extremely weak-hearted students secretly tormented An Dain out of jealousy, feeding Cottonball pesticides.

Choi Pyeondeuk also helped cover them up by framing An Dain, who lost Cottonball, as the bullying's perpetrator.

'The more I think about it, the more he feels like a son of a bitch.'

In the game, Choi Pyeondeuk committed countless crimes. However, he both ate and lived well until the end.

The status of a prestigious high school's teacher was very stable, highly reliable, and well-guaranteed.

He made good use of that fact, got lucky, and formed good connections.

'No, calling Choi Pyeondeuk a son of a bitch makes me feel sorry for dogs.'

After Jegal Jaegeol left Silverlight and died slowly, Choi Pyeondeuk took over the Department of Education and continued to thrive.

'The more I leave him alone, the more his prestige will grow.'

By the time the final chapter was approaching, most teachers were dead. So, Choi Pyeondeuk had risen to the top of Silverlight.

"The people who pick my class are well informed, so you know what I'm trying to say. Well, be good to me this semester, okay?"

He still hadn't committed some of his evil deeds yet.

But…

'I have no intention of watching.'

As soon as I had the right piece, I'd expel him right away.

I mentally put together a number of ways to face him.

As I thought about it, I was able to listen to the son of a bitch's rambling disguised as a class with a smile.

Oops haven't checked in for a bit and saw the updates. Thanks for the chapter as always. I wonder if Yoonseop will be one of those enemy-turned-ally characters or if he still ends up being taken over. Also it appears it is time for another ousting, I am prepared for the inevitable chaos… *maniacal laughter ensues*

Thanks for the chapter as always.

I did not expect magic as his choice but it kind of makes sense now that I think about it. I wonder what the magic system is like, does it use stamina or Mana? I hope it goes into a bit of detail into that since magic appears to be a different branch from 'presence'

Thanks for the chapter as always.

That oath of silence and deactivation of Gwanglim is quite concerning when thinking of the implications it brings. A student or faculty members should be the main suspects but considering the events of the fantasy auction the scope is a little too big for my small brain to handle.

oddly enough, the "deactivated" gwanglim is meant to mean "they aren't using their gwanglim at the moment", probably so the author can keep some things secret without using (loading partially failed).

anyways, ty for always commenting, it gives me a huge boost to motivation!

i'm really glad you picked this story up for TL, i was hesitating to read it after seeing thr reviews aboit bad translation – so i'm glad you picked it up  your translation is very good, it's a pleasure to read.

i like the story so far – just enough intrigue to be interesting but not too confusing, we get to (mostly) see the MC actually plan and strategize without giving away spoilers, and as someone who loves 'fix it' fics, i really like the theme

thanks again for the translation, i'm curious to see where this goes

Btw due to your wonderful wonderful translation help I am currently working on fixing some terms in a MTL text file (chapters 1-565) namely to change the names and such so that MTL would finally make sense instead of the stuff on websites. so if you want to help or get the file please let me know! just reply here
