Chapter 31 - A leather to weather

"No."

After all the venom was puked out, Ezio took his weapons from its body. The catobleplas' blood slowly drained out from its body, making it easier for Ezio to cut off its skin and its muscles. Every movement of Ezio was precise, and his blade smoothly glided between the muscles.

"You will use its skin as a material for your task." Ezio threw the skin on the ground and placed half of the meat above it. "For the meantime, carry this meat and bring it back to the cave."

"Wait, how can I carry all this meat? And how can I make a bag out of this skin? Why won't you teach me how to fight?" Lev scratched his head.

"Always make use of your surroundings." Ezio purposely ignored Lev's last question.

Ezio left the corpse and continued to walk back while carrying the other half of the meat. "You should also hurry up, some other monsters will smell the scent of blood and show up to feed on it. You don't want to be near it for the next following minutes if you don't want to be killed."

"Wait, what?" Lev retorted.

But before he could finish, Ezio's figure started running, slowly disappearing in the thick fog.

"Wait! I don't know the way back!"

Lev grabbed the end of the skin and dragged it on the ground. Fortunately for Lev, the grasses that stood from the ground were slightly wet because of the dew, which made it easier for him to drag.

After finding his way back at the river shore, he saw Ezio standing there, empty-handed. The meat that he carried a while ago was already up in the cave, cooking.

"Leave the meat here, that will be the Jäger's share. You should continue with the task," Ezio took out a small hidden knife from his body and gave it to Lev. "You will be needing this."

There was still a little time for Lev to think about how he could make use of the small knife that Ezio gave. He believed that the weapon Ezio gave him was a clue on how to complete the task.

After Ezio left with the meat, Lev washed the skin on the river and placed it on the ground. It was roughly 2 meters long and about 1 and a half meter wide. He sat cross-legged on the ground and tried to think on how he could make a bag out of the skin.

But there was another problem that Lev encountered: how to make leather out of the skin.

He was clueless on how to make one, but he badly needed to make a bag so he tried to base it on what he observed from most leathers. There was no hair nor flesh on the surface and it was smooth and strong.

First, removing the hair and the small pieces of flesh that were stuck on the epidermis. He tried to peel off the hair but it was too hard for him to do it, and he was doing more damage on the skin so he quickly eliminated the idea of peeling it manually.

He rubbed his temples and tried his best to analyze what he could make use of his surroundings. While racking up his brain, a sweet cooking smell hit his nostrils, making his stomach growl.

What a nice smell... Lev couldn't think straight because the smell was so enticing.

"Wait..." Lev remembered something. "Cooking... Boiling! If I put the skin on boiling water then the hair will automatically peel on its own!"

Lev's lips curled up. He was proud of himself for thinking such a creative way.

He carried the skin and hung it on his shoulders while thinking whether he would climb the cliff or go to the waterfall. It would take more time to go to the entrance behind the waterfall rather than climbing directly on the cliff, so he chose the latter. By this way, he could save more time to think for the next step after peeling the skin.

Inside the cave, Ezio was stirring a wooden stick inside the cauldron that was hanging above the campfire. Lev gently spread the skin beside the fire and sat down.

"Can I use the cauldron after we finish eating?" Lev asked.

Ezio took a quick glance at Lev and continued stirring while replying, "Sure."

At this time, Lev took the chance to ask once more, "Can you teach me to fight?"

"No."

"Why?"

"Because I said so," Ezio calmly answered.

It was a reasonable answer but Lev wasn't satisfied. He wanted to learn how to fight just like the way he did.

After finishing their early dinner, Lev went down the river and cleaned the cauldron, filling it with water. He decided to go to the entrance through the waterfall because he could not climb and carry the cauldron at the same time.

Continuing on his duty, Lev placed the chain on the hook and waited for it to boil.

While doing so, he thought of the next step he would do. His plan after the hairs are removed is to soak the catobleplas' hide under the cold river, this way, it would cool down the hide and make it hard. After that, he would leave it beside the fire to warm it up.

This was what he planned on doing. Next problem was how to bind the hide together. He needed something that could hold the skin firmly.

A needle and a thread!

But where could Lev find one? The answer was simple, create one. Just like Ezio said, use the surrounding to your advantage, and that was what he planned doing on the next day.

Night fell and the cauldron was boiling. Lev placed the skin inside and waited for a few moments.

While waiting, Lev checked on Ezio to see what he was doing. By then, he noticed that Ezio wasn't with them. He wondered where he went but he guessed that he was just exploring the forest, looking for something that he might newly discover.

When the boiling was complete, he threw the hot water, with hairs in it, off the cliff. Now with the hide on his hand, he dropped down to the dark river to soak the hide under the river.

On the bottom, Lev spread the hide on the stones and placed some heavy stones on top to avoid being washed away. He planned on soaking the hide throughout the night and in the morning, he would place it near the fire.

Lev wasn't sure whether he could complete the task the next day, but he would try his best to create one.
