Chapter 6 - Go time

The next five nights passed uneventfully. Diach and I stayed in most of the time because of our current situation. The only time Diach left was to replenish our blood supply. Even though the hotel was darkened from the outside, it still did not stop the sun's ultraviolet rays from creeping into the room. It was not enough to burn our skin but it depleted nourishment incredibly quickly.

We left the instant the sun went down on the fifth night. I was most concerned with getting back to my parents' house. It was not my home anymore so I could only refer to it as theirs. There was police tape all over the block from the street to the front lawn. It was all over where we were fighting. The car was also still in the driveway, although it was totaled. As we approached, I heard three distinct voices; my parents' and some man's gruff voice. Diach followed me onto the roof of the house but I made a small noise upon landing whereas Diach was totally silent.

"What was that?" The man's voice asked. My mother must have heard me as well because her pulse quickened but slowed almost immediately.

"I do not know officer. It is a new house so it might still need some settling in." My mother said. She was lying through her teeth.

"Oh, okay. Well are you both sure there is nothing else that we have not gone over?" The policeman asked.

"I do not think so. Fias is his only friend as you know. But you might want to check the diner down the street. It is where he sometimes takes refuge when he needs to be alone. All the staff there know him by name already." My mom said lying to the officer's face. She knew of my popularity at school as well as the principal but chose not to mention them.

"Alrighty then. We thank you for all your help. We will send a cruiser over to keep you safe while we go check out the diner. Please do not hesitate to call if you hear anything. We are just trying to keep you safe since you are the suspect's parents." The policeman said before getting up and walking to the door. He left a note for my parents before getting in his car and driving away. When he was a satisfactory distance away, my mother called out to me.

"Skytel, honey, come inside." she said walking back inside the house. When I dropped in front of the door, my father was holding the door open and my mother was walking to sit at the table. Diach followed but my father was wary of him. He motioned him inside anyway.

"Mom, I am sorry. I did not want any of this to get to you both. It was out of my control. Our neighbors do not mind their own damn business and I will get them for this." I said looking at the house directly across the street.

"Skytel, what has been going on son?" My father asked noticing my sudden hostility. "You are usually so even tempered and calm but you are acting totally different. Did you get yourself into some trouble again? Have you gotten back into drugs?"

"No, father, I assure you it is not the drugs again. It is hard to explain in words. Perhaps it is easier to show you." I said before standing up and stretching. My teeth started to change first and then my claws came out. This would suffice even without my wings so I stopped here.

"What...what is this?" My mother and father asked in horror. I knew they would not take the news well. My father had to sit down before he collapsed. I truly did look like something right out of a horror movie so I could not blame them for reacting the way they did. I gave them a few minutes to recompose themselves before we continued.

"I will not bother telling you what lead to this but there is a good reason for it. Now I have to go and learn how to be the best warrior I can. I am going to keep you both safe." I said holding back tears from having to leave my parents and saying goodbye.

"Is this because of that boy that put you in the hospital? Did he do this to you?" My father asked seriously now fully calmed down.

"Are you going to be coming back? No matter what you look like, you are still our son and we will help you with whatever it is you are going through." My mother said begging me to stay. Watching her plead weighed heavily on me.

"Mom, you know I cannot. I really wish I could stay and we could continue on as we have been but you see what I look like. I do not know all the details for when it happens or how to control it. It would be dangerous and I would never forgive myself if I hurt either of you." I said holding back tears. My father was usually the stoic one but even he was having a hard time hearing his son had to leave them and maybe never come back. The man was looking and listening with intent.

"Please, Sky, please just reconsider. We can find someone who can help you." My mom begged through tears. I could feel the sadness in each of her words and it was proving to be too much to bear.

"I can't!" I roared through a full transformation. My wings had come out and I was in my full vampire form now. Both of them stumbled back at seeing my full form.

"Skytel, relax. These are your parents and you have got to calm down. I will not allow violence against them. I will knock you out here if you prefer." Diach said now standing with his hand on my shoulder. I had to focus on my breathing and relax to turn back into my human form that my parents knew.

"I'm sorry mom. I will come back." I said crying as I ran out the door. Before I could think about it, I jumped into the air and flew off. The hotel had only been reserved for five days so I could not go back there. The forest on the outskirts of the city was a good place to be alone. My father often took me here to hunt and talk about any father/son things he needed at whatever point. Diach came down a few minutes after and saw me sitting on a boulder looking down thinking.

"You came to the forest?" Diach asked in bewilderment. He did not know the peace of serenity like my father and I.

I shot him a look and said, "This is one of my most loved places. I had to take a few minutes to think alone. I practically just threatened my own mother! I threatened the woman who gave me life! My two best friends and I just ruined our relationship!"

"Trust me, they will forget about this. You seemed to hav a deeper relationship than one conversation could ruin, no matter how emotionally driven it was." Diach said soft heartedly. Even he was trying to calm my worries. When I jumped from the rock, I heard footsteps approaching. They were moving too fast to be any wildlife.

"We have to tell the higher ups. He must be a new breed. Only the purebreds are that strong and there has not been a new purebred in centuries." A moonwalker said to another on his side. They were running somewhere and two were ahead of the others. I was about to jump down to intercept them and blow off some steam but Diach stopped me. He shook his head when I looked at him and put his finger to his lips in a shushing motion.

"They are not going to like hearing that there is a new breed of vamp." One of the moonwalkers said to the one who was talking before. He looked at him with a worried expression as they passed under us. We were sitting on a tree branch making sure not to move even an inch. The group passed under us and kept going without slowing down. After another minute and a half passed, we dropped back down and grabbed our things from a hole in a fallen tree. Just when Diach picked it up, I heard my phone's ringtone start playing.

I found the phone and answered to Linz's voice, "Hey, Skytel, it really sucks that we did not get to spend some more time together after the party. I still do not know what happened between you and Motoro that brought all this on but I wish you would have felt comfortable sharing it with me at least. I guess this was a unrequitted crush. Well I will look for you if you ever come back in town." Linz said before moving the phone from her ear.

"Wait, Linz..." I started before she hung up. "I really wish we could have spent more time together. I really liked you and wanted to see where our relationship went. You will be the first person I call if I ever come back into town. I do not want you to waste the opportunities you have being with someone like me. I had to leave without you. You will go on to be a great doctor, or a great lawyer, or a great whatever. You have all the potential in the world and you are a very beautiful girl. I am really going to miss you and regret not being able to stay with you."

"I love you, Skytel. I wish I could have told you before now. I was going to tell you at the end of the school year when we had a whole summer we could spend together and you could come out on vacation with me and my family." Linz said regretfully. That cemented it. I had to come back soon. She was a jewel among our generation and hearing her saying she cared for me was not a chance I was going to waste. But I also could not tell her about my current predicament so I was in a tight spot. Fias was the next one to call. To my surprise, both he and Nikki talked on his phone.

"Hey, man, I don't really know what is going on with you. I thought we were alot closer than this; no secrets, remember? But either way, I am going to miss you. We have been best friends since we were still in the crib but everyone has stuff they have to do alone. I understand this is just one of those times. We will tell the school something came up with your dad and you are transferring for a while so they do not ask questions. Be safe, man." Fias said emotionally.

"You know we will be brothers for life. That will never change no matter the distance. This is just one of those times, man. But I will do my best to keep in touch." I choked out. It was all I could think to say in this time.

"We do not know each other all that much besides what Fias has told you about me. Even so, the school is going to miss you. Stay safe and come back so he does not have to miss you too much." Nikki said trying to sound compassionate. The girl and I truly did not know each other outside of her relationship with Fias. We both kept our distance from each other even before she started dating my best friend. We had different cliques and she was not my type of person so I avoided her as she did me.

I did not look too far into her words but just gave her a satisfactory mhm. It was no secret to the school that her and I did not get on much. But her boyfriend was struggling so she was trying to be there for him which I understood. When she hung up, Diach took the phone from me. He crushed it before we continued on as we agreed. We could not risk the police or any human tracking us when we got back to the base. That would be very bad for humanity as a whole. The princes were not too big on human communication devices, either, so this was the easier way. All the numbers I cared about I had memorized anyway so it did not bother me much. We hiked through the night and made a shelter for the morning so we did not get vaporized by the sun. We had to work fast to make the shelter good enough that no sun would get in. It was a very well constructed shelter. Diach had experience building tents like this from the looks of it.

We continued on when the sun went down the next night. We had to feast on elk blood since there were not any humans around but it was not as strong as human blood and we were not even near full strength after gorging on it. It was an empty fulfillment as we drank. Our stomachs were full but our bodies were not. This continued on for three nights before we got to our destination. We had to go at a normal walking pace so I could memorize the directions and take in what I needed to about the vampire clan at large but especially the princes. Just before dawn on the fourth night, we finally made it to the base. It was in the side of a cliff face. It did not look that impressive from the outside but from the inside, it was incredible.
