Chapter 7 - The Spirited One

"Things Happen For A Reason.", this was a famous saying in my small town. At least until I was born.

My life never followed reason, I'd fall down the crip as a 2 months old child. I'd trip on thin air, or water'd splash me in the middle of nowhere. People seems to naturally ignore my presence, as if I was made of thin air.

I... was hated by the world.

That was the result of the meeting with the shaman of my town.

Sold by my father, to avoid disaster. Yet, no one wanted to buy me, in fear of inviting one.

The traffickers threw me in the Forbidden Forest, yet even monsters refused my flesh. Determined to end my life, yet every trial failed. Even death hated my embrace.

I started to hate the world like it hates me. What have I done, for you to reject me. If I shouldn't be here, then why am I?.

Strolling down a village, I heard that the kingdom was recruiting Knights. For age 10 and above, gender is of no mind", was how the announcement was made. The promise of food and shelter, was more than death could ever provide.

I signed up for the war, delighted by the hot meal. For the kingdom to lose the war, In two weeks time.

I fled to an other place, lived like nomads, for every place I take, is soon leveled to the ground.

Even I have started to hate myself.

I met an acquaintance of mine, my roommate during war, in a backward village. He stated he wants to enlist in the Empire army. Dragging my hand, we soon went and applied. My friend passed with flying colors, while I was left behind. Starting from the recruit training all again was more than I could stand. I went an applied for a different line, a worker. Yet, in a weeks time I was almost dead, for how clumsy I am.

Soon I was relocated to the garbage can, The Nameless Mansion. Rumor say that once you're in, you can't go out. A hell hole of trash, and those out of their mind.

Going there, I witnessed that books, are not what they seem from the outside. I met strict ones that would never leave me behind. I met a nasty one, that's always wory of what he leaves behind. And I met the one, that took away my fate, only to make life a better place.

"I've never met A Spirited one before", looking behind I was wondering, from where comes this sound?.

"Mischief and pranks, and a hint of dark. Interesting things sure comes a lot these days".

Lifting my head, on the balcony of the second floor, I could see a silhouette of a child.

"Come on in, we sure have a lot to talk about", said the voice inviting.

Going in I felt that it's a tragedy such a nice place is left with no care. Going up the stairs, and into the corridor, I can't help but be astound, for I haven't yet fell down.

Going through the open door into the room and then the balcony, as if I'm controlled. I met a young lady, with green hair standing behind a chair, while serving refreshments. The recliner had a tall back, and it was facing the other direction, I didn't get to see who was sitting there.

"Welcome, young one. What brings you to The Nameless Mansion?" said the young maid. I could feel vigilance and danger behind that smile.

"Spirited One, my maid meant no offense, you're on foreign lands. What brings the pleasure to grace our land?", said the voice coming from the couch. It's the same on that called me here.

"I'm sorry, what is the Spirited One?, why are you calling me that?". I could feel tension in the air, like I stepped on the wrong mines.

"Can you hear the laughter in the air?". I almost cracked at the voice for that, no one said anything about this. "In a perfectly still and silent place, who would be brave enough to do that?", with lips twitching, I could barely get the words out.

" hmm.. That's strange, they quite like you. But you seem as if you're ignoring them". Said the voice, with a hint of coldness.

I felt my hands shaking, my back was drenshed with cold sweat. How did this person know?, I had hidden it for my entire life, not even my parents knew of this.

I've always heard voices, children's voices. They laugh every time I make a mistake. They cry in fear every time I plan death.

They... They were... my devils. Clenching my hands, I questioned the one in front of me. Trying my best to calm my voice from shaking and with concern I asked , "How do you know.. them?, Did they curse you too?".

A moment of silence followed, even the voices in my head had stopped. After what felt like eternity, the person said carefully, Al's if choosing their words :" It's not a curse, it's actually a blessing...".

Those words shook me from deep inside. They meant that my entire life was a blessing?!!. Really!! Can you take a blessing like that away!!?? You call a life of a runaway... A blessing!!?.

If it wasn't for the woman standing in front of me, balantly leaking killing intent, I'd have jumped there and stripped that person's throat. I didn't notice my eyes were bloodshot, or that I've let down any form of courtesy, and started giving out my thoughts.

That person soon continued: "You don't believe me.". That was a statement, not a question.

"They've accompanied you for your entire life, that's as much as a family should be. They never thought their pranks would corner you that much, but you never listened to them. The fact that you're alive today is that, they saved you. Over and over. Take your time and think unbiased, you'll figure it out too. ".

I decided to finish this irritating conversation, but there's one thing this person never mentioned again," The Spirited One ".

" Wlhy am I a Spirited one?, what does it mean? ", I asked sounding concerned and fearful.

I heared a laugh coming from him," you don't need to act. You already exposed your self, with that killing intent, nobody would believe you to ba a harmless rabbit. A Spirited One ;is one loved by spirits, one that lives with spirits and dies with them. Instead of the normal blessings, they get unique ones. You've 3 spirits with you, and they seem to like you a lot. ", after saying this, the terrace went silent.

I heard a small sigh from the chair. The woman's eyes dilated a little, she feigned calm, but her heart beat blew her cover.

She said :" Now that everything is said, you'll live in the first floor, you can go down, someone will lead you to your room."

As soon as I left the room, I could hear the frantic voice of the woman; " Master,... M.. Master. I told you not to over do it. You're already sick...". I didn't stick around to see what happened. That one doesn't know how to act.

Oh, it seems I forgot to introduce my self, I stopped walking, turned toward the room's door and said in a high voice "My name is Mary. See you around". With a fake smile on my lips, I continued walking.

A good actress is one that never gets down from the theater. What's true and what's false, are always dependent on the way we look and what we choose to believe.
