Chapter 16 - Elites

Could he have been the seventh person in the other room? It sounds ridiculous, but I know I've heard his voice before. If it was actually him in the room, which I'm pretty sure it was, why was such an important person in my room? Everyone keeps saying that I'm 'special', but nobody's explained anything to me. I'm so confused, I don't even know what to think.

"Please students, stop bickering. There's no reason to fight over something so trivial." Axel and the schoolgirl glared at each other one final time before turning their attention back towards the front of the room. Axel sat down in his chair with an angry grunt, but didn't protest any more. This chairman guy isn't messing around, they're both definitely scared of him or at least respect him.

The chairman turns his attention toward me, receiving a glare in return. I'm still being held tight by this 'Crawler' dude, with his hand over my mouth.

"Don't be like that, he ordered me to get you out of that god-forsaken room after all." I kicked him in the balls as hard as I could behind me, sending him crumpling to his knees, letting go of me in the process. I jump away from him as fast as I can so he can't grab me again.

"Why the hell am I here you psychopath?" I spin around to face the chairman, approaching him angrily. He backs up while I continue to approach him before I eventually pin him against the wall. He still has a calm expression on his face, pissing me off even more.

"Please calm down Miss Nova."

"I'm not doing anything until you give me an explanation." I can feel the stares of the students in the room on my back, but I don't care. I need an explanation, too many crazy things have happened today, I'm done being a sane individual.

"Fine, fine. Just ask whatever you want and I'll answer your question as well as I can."

"Okay, first question; Who are you?"

"I'm the chairman of the school." No duh, I already guessed that. Whatever, it doesn't matter if I know who he is or not.

"Fine, whatever. Why am I here?"

"You're at the school because you passed the entrance exam. I thought you knew that." He said it in such an innocent tone, I can feel my blood boiling.

"You know that's not what I meant." I don't have the patience to play games right now. "Why am I in this room instead of with the other students?"

"I'll explain that to you later, with the other students in the room." Ugh, just answer me now. I slowly let him go, still standing in front of him.

"Last question, is everyone okay?"

"Yes, due to your efforts, all of the students and heroes are safe. If it weren't for you, I don't know what would've happened. None of the pros even noticed anything was wrong, it's amazing you noticed." Well, at least everyone else is safe. I'm still frustrated that the villains got away though. I need to get stronger, there's no way I can stay alive if I take such a beating every time I fight someone.

As if it was waiting for the right opportunity, pain flared through my body more than ever before, making me exhale in pain.

"Please take a seat and rest, I'll explain the situation to everyone." No way I'm going along with this crap, I need to get out of here. I look towards the door, where Crawler stands in the way glaring back at me.

"You're lucky I'm not going to kill you after that stunt you pulled." He said under his breath.

"You're lucky I didn't kick you in the balls harder." I retort back, silencing him. Still, with him standing by the door, I can't get out of the room. I turn away from him and walk towards the desk, trying to cover up my limp. I guess I took more damage than I realized, but I have to stay strong.

I sit down in the front row and slouch in my chair, leaning on the desk. The chairman straightens out his suit and steps up to the podium in the front of the room.

"Okay, now you're all here. Time to get to business. I'm going to try to be concise, since the other students are waiting for me. We have the initial test, designed to see who can function in a desperate situation to weed out the weak. However, there was another test after we had you all gather here." I shouldn't be surprised they had something else up their sleeves, the douchebags. "We station five suspicious looking figures around the meeting place once everybody was brought into the room. We wait until all of the people have been apprehended by students, taking the students who noticed the situation and took action to this very room to become the elite of the class."

"Yeah, I get that I'm amazing, unlike these extras. But why is she here? We already had our five elite and then you made us all wait for this little girl." Looks like this Axel kid is exactly as I thought he was.

"I'm not a little girl, you damn turd."

"Please stop, both of you." It's the schoolgirl. "Give the chairman time to explain, it looks like he has more to say. It was awfully rude for you all to interrupt him." Man, she's annoying.

"Thank you Aubree. Now, as I was saying, we typically have five elites chosen each year, but this year is a little different. I assume you all don't know about this, since we took you away before people realized anything was happening, but Nova actually thwarted a villain attack by not just one villain, but three, saving many people in the process. In addition to this, she also had the best results in the tests, and has an incredibly formidable power. We have recognized her skills, and believe she deserves to be one of the elites. That is why she's here." Woah, wait a minute. That's a little much. The room went completely quiet, and everybody turned to look at me. Even the kid who was sleeping heard it, and was looking at me from behind her book.

I roll my eyes and look at the desk in front of me, formulating ideas of how I'd be able to get out of here. I hear Axel grunt, and then storm up to me. Even his footsteps sound angry, who is this kid?

He throws a punch, catching me on the jaw. I go flying across the room, partially because his punch was strong and partially because of how light I am. I could've blocked it, but I don't feel like it. I stand up and brush myself off, calmly walking back to my seat.

"There's no way she's as powerful as you say she is, I bet she bribed you or something. She's so weak she went flying!"

"No," I say calmly in my seat. "I went flying because I weigh less than forty pounds. That was a pretty good punch though." Scoffing, he picks me up by my neck with one hand, dangling me over the floor in an attempt to choke me.

"God you're annoying." I stare back at him with a blank face, arms dangling loosely by my side. "Why won't you even fight back? I'm choking you and you're not even doing anything! I don't believe that you took down those villains, you won't even throw a punch back at me!"

"Why should I punch you when I could knock you out no problem? I have to reason to fight you, the only people who are threats in this entire building are the pros." I hold myself up with a gust of wind, pushing him back with another, forcing him to let me go. I drift slowly back down and sit in my seat again.

"What the hell was that?" With a feral growl, he comes charging at me again, flinging a bolt of fire from his hands at me. I use my oddity to blow it away, barely batting an eyelash. He throws another punch at me, and I dodge, pinning him to the desk with his arm behind his back. This dude's really starting to piss me off.

"I don't want to hurt you, but I won't just sit back and take this." I say in a quiet yet angry tone. "I try to stay cool, but you're really starting to piss me off. Back off or you might actually end up getting hurt."

"Damn you, you little pipsqueak. I could take you down easy if I was trying." I let go of him, only for him to punch me in the gut right where the villain blasted a hole in my abdomen.

"Playing dirty, are we?" I say, wincing from the pain. He lights his hand on fire and sends another punch at me while I'm down, hitting the same spot as before. I see lights flash in my eyes for a second as I crumple over, standing up as soon as they clear. That one hurt, leaving a scorching hole in my hoodie. I look him straight in the eyes, meeting his burning eyes with an icy glare.

"How the hell are you still standing?" He says, backing off in surprise.

"Doesn't matter." I say, sitting down again. "I suggest you leave me alone before I decide to fight back." I can feel my anger sneaking into my voice, I should probably shut up now. I don't think I should make an enemy of this kid, something tells me he's dangerous. Man, this is gonna be rough, I can already feel it.
