As soon as I walked on the bus, there was chaos. I probably should've expected this, considering it's a bus full of teenagers waiting to see if they get to be heroes or not, but I didn't think that they'd just be using their powers right from the get go on the bus. I guess they're all a lot more excited about this test than I am.
The bus was freezing cold, probably from the kid who was playing with frost on the window, and there were explosions everywhere. I think someone has some jitters. In one corner of the bus it's raining, the other corner is just pure darkness, it's a mess. There's a person with wings trying to fly around, that didn't work so well considering we're in a bus. There were so many different things going on, I couldn't even tell what was happening. There didn't appear to be a single person who wasn't using their oddity.
I just sat down in the back of the bus and stared out the window at the sky. I was so distracted that I didn't even realize a person slid in the seat right next to me.
"Um, hey." I swear I jumped like six feet out of my seat when I heard a soft, quiet voice right next to me.
"Oh my gosh I'm so sorry I didn't even realize you sat next to me, can I help you with something?"
"Well, you were just the only person that wasn't trying to explode everything or bring the bus down, so I figured I could be safe sitting here. If you want me to leave I can, I'm so sorry for bothering you." While she was talking I took in her features; she's super short (I mean like four foot six), and has a super soft looking face. She's got golden brown hair that falls to her shoulders and frames her face perfectly. Seeing me looking at her, she smiles sweetly at me. I can't right now, she's so freaking cute!
"Oh no, it's not a problem. I actually came onto the bus with someone but I'm pretty sure she's just running alongside the bus outside now. She's really full of energy."
"Oh, you must be talking about Dash! I saw her outside a couple minutes before the bus started moving."
"Wait, you know Dash?" Wow, I didn't think this little girl would come from an oddity school.
"No, it's not like that. My oddity allows me to learn everything about a person by just looking at them. I can even copy their oddity for a little while, but it takes a lot out of me so I don't use it much." Holy crap, these people are crazy! There's absolutely no way I'm going to be chosen with these people around.
"Huh, well, you probably already know this then, but I'm Nova."
"Oh yeah! I'm Honey! Nice to meet you!" Honey smiled sweetly again while saying that, and my heart melted. I really hope we see each other again after the test. Me and her started talking more, getting to know each other, until it happened.
Bang! Everybody on the bus goes quiet as the door is broken down. Dash comes running into the bus and bolts towards me.
"Nova, didn't you notice the windows going dark?" Really? The windows are dark? I didn't even notice.
"So what? Maybe they just don't want us to know where the test is." I say with a shrug.
"Wait Nova, there's more! While I was running, I noticed us getting further and further away from the general location they gave us for the test. I thought something was off, so I ran a little ahead to see where the bus was going, and we're driving straight for the lava pit!" The lava pit is our city's form of disposal, which was originally created by a villain fighting a hero.
"No way!" Honey screeched, "We've gotta tell the bus driver!"
"You idiots." I look around to see who said that, since it wasn't Honey or Dash, but I don't see anyone. Then suddenly a boy pops out of nowhere in the aisle beside us. "Didn't you notice? There isn't a bus driver. Or a steering wheel, for that matter of fact." You know what, I have bigger fish to fry than questioning where this guy came from.
"Okay, let's assess the situation." I say, trying to calm Honey down. "The bus is driving towards the lava pit, and nobody else has noticed." At this point, everyone has already gone back to what they were doing, ignoring Dash's entrance.
"Yeah, I'm pretty sure we're the only ones who know about it." It's that boy again. He's being surprisingly calm in this situation, he's gonna be a valuable asset to the team.
"Okay, we have to save everybody on this bus. Dash, I want you to go see how far away the pit is. You, boy, what's your OD?" OD is just a shortened way to say oddity, it means the exact same thing.
"I can turn myself and others invisible." I feel like there's something he's hiding from us, but I don't have time to worry about that now.
"I'm back! The bus is about ten minutes away from the pit, we've got a bit of time, but not much." Dash really can be efficient when she needs to be.
"Okay, let me think…" Dash can run fast, Honey can copy oddities, crazy dude can turn people invisible, and then there's my OD… We don't have much to work with here. Let's see, we don't really have time to explain the situation to everybody, so we're on our own.
"Oh man, we're all gonna die!" Honey's started hyperventilating, and dash is trying to calm her down. I just need to come up with a plan…
"Bingo!"
"Nova? Now's not the time to be playing games. Honey's freaking out and invisible boy isn't doing anything."
"No, I came up with an idea. Everybody listen; Invisible boy, turn Honey invisible so she can get to the kid with the ice powers and copy his OD. Honey, once you've done that I want you to ride on Dash's back and freeze the tires, axels, whatever you can on the outside of the bus to slow it down as much as possible."
"Okay, so we can slow the bus down, so what? We can't get everyone off the bus in time!" Dash started tapping her foot on the ground so fast she's started making a dent in the floor.
"Trust me, I can get everyone off the bus." I can get everyone off with my OD, I just need them to do their job as well as they can.
"Okay, Honey, hold my hand. Let's get this plan in action." The invisible kid and Honey disappeared, and then came back a second later. Dash and I make eye contact, I nod, and then dash picks up Honey and bolts out the bus. I can feel the bus starting to slow down, they probably bought us a couple minutes.
I go to the hole Dash made in the bus and look outside. Despite the awful situation we're in, it's such a nice day. I look back towards the inside of the bus. There's about fifteen people on the bus, counting invisible boy. I inhale deeply, and exhale slowly. It's action time.
