Chapter 3 - An Odd Encounter

I stare at my closet, trying to decide what I want to wear. My dads really want me to wear a dress, but I don't really do dresses, so that's not going to happen. I should probably wear something kind of nice, maybe a blouse or something. Hmm...

In the end I ended up in my usual black hoodie and loose jeans, screw dressing up for the stupid test. It's not like anyone's gonna notice me anyways, there's no point in looking nice. There's no way I'm going to be chosen, after all nobody from my school has ever gotten chosen.

Let me clear some things up for you; every eighth-grader is tested at the end of the year to see if they'll get chosen. However, some kids are sent to middle schools that train their oddities, increasing the chance they'll get chosen. My school isn't one of those, it's just a public school. Because of that, nobody has ever been chosen from my school. However, there may be one person from my school this year that will be chosen. You'll meet them later.

As I step into the hallway, I check both ways to make sure neither of my parents are there to see what I'm wearing. I hurry and run to the bathroom. across the hall, careful to be as quiet as I possibly can. Walking up to the counter, I raise my eyes and stare at my reflection in the mirror. My hair has really pretty light blue steaks in it today, the same color as the sky outside. It probably won't stay this way for very long, but at least it doesn't look like it's going to rain today. My hair changes color with the sky, and gray doesn't look very good on me.

I don't really feel like doing my hair nicely today, so I'm just going to put it in a messy bun and call it good. After I did my hair I took care of the rest of my morning routine, and before I left the bathroom, I looked in the mirror again. A messy, disheveled girl stares back at me. I don't wear makeup, so I look a little rough. I stare into the mirror, and two light gray eyes framed with long, dark lashes shine back at me.

Sighing, I turn away from the mirror and head out of the bathroom. I head back towards my room, and grab my brown shoulder bag from the end of my bed. I shove all of my books into my bag, and grab my phone off my nightstand. I put the phone in a side pocket in my bag, and head towards my jewelry stand.

Pops keeps getting me all sorts of jewelry; rings, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, you name it! I've never actually worn any of his jewelry, I'm not really a big fan of that stuff. I only have one piece of jewelry that I've ever worn, and I wear it everyday. I grab a chain on the necklace rack, and hold it up so I can see the solid silver ring hanging on it. I put it on over my head, and then head towards the door.

I would go to the kitchen to get breakfast, but I really don't want to confront my family before I leave. I go put on my pure white sneakers and then leave. Heading to the bus stop, I look up as I walk, staring at the sky.

"Watch Out!" I jolt out of my daydreaming to hear a voice behind me. I look at my surroundings and see a girl hurtling at me so fast I didn't have time to move out of the way. Bam! "OhmygoshI'msosorryareyouokay?IsthereanythingIcan-" She's talking so fast I can barely understand her. I put my finger to her lips to get her to stop talking, interrupting her mid sentence. I take a closer look at the girl sitting on the ground beside me.

She's got short, electric yellow hair that's super messy and sticking out all over the place. She's got a few freckles smattered across her rosy cheeks, and is wearing skinny jeans and a black leather jacket. I stand up, brush myself off, and offer my hand to her.

"Are you okay? I'm so sorry I was in the way, I didn't realize you were behind me!" I said, helping her to her feet. In response she kind of just stood there looking at me, slightly confused.

"Why are you apologizing?" She's speaking at a speed that I can understand now. "I was the one who ran into you, I'm really sorry about that, by the way. Are you okay?"

"Oh, yes, I'm fine. By the way, how were you going that fast?"

"Oh, um, that was my oddity. I can move really fast, my speed varies on my mood and my level of concentration and willpower. I probably shouldn't have been using it, but I'm so excited for the first day of testing!" Wait, she's in the testing! That's a pretty amazing oddity, there's no way I can beat that! I guess this is the result of the oddity focused middle schools.

"Hey, I'm heading to the testing too. Wanna walk to the bus stop with me?" I could see her fidgeting and shifting as though she was brimming with energy.

"Sure! But, um, do you mind if we run together? I don't think I can handle walking right now…" she said with a small nervous smile.

"I'm fine running, but, I don't think I can keep up with you!"

"Oh, that won't be a problem! I can speed up other people with me! It does cut my speed in half and gives the other half to you, but we'll still be going pretty fast!"

"Okay, sure!" I barely got out the last word before she grabbed my hand and basically dragged me to the bus stop. She was running so fast, I was flying out behind her.

"Oh wow, sorry about that!" We stopped at the bus stop about two minutes later. She just ran a twenty minute walk in two minutes! This chick is crazy! "I didn't mean to drag you like that, you're as light as air!"

"Heh, yeah, I get that alot." It's probably a side effect of my oddity, but I weigh less than fifty pounds.

"Oh, by the way, my name is Dash!" Huh, that name doesn't surprise me.

"I'm Nova, nice to meet you!"

"Your name is Nova? That's so freaking cool!" She almost sounded resentful, like she wished her name was as cool as mine. "Oh hey look, it's the bus! Time to go to the testing grounds!" For the first time I realized that even though we went to different schools, we were on the same bus going to the same place. I guess all the schools are tested at the same place! Well, time to go. I wish I could spend more time with Dash, she doesn't seem to be obsessed about the test at all. I guess she's the only one. It's a shame that when the tests are over I'm probably never going to see her again once she's chosen. I take one last glance at the sky before boarding the bus, marking the beginning of the testing period.
