Chapter 59 - - 59 -

This new bit of information caused Midnight to snarl, swivelling his head to spit some more words under his breath. He then looked directly at me once again with a deep frown. "I hoped that it wouldn't come to this, but I believe that whoever or whatever might be controlling your dream, the figure that you saw in those stained glass windows, might be somehow forbidding you to fall asleep so we can't access the labyrinth."

Now armed with this theory, I decided to rely on Midnight for help in falling asleep rather than my medication. I nodded towards Midnight and the two of us started to move toward my bed. I sat down before peering over at Midnight. "So how are you going to execute the spell? Is there anything I need to do beforehand?"

Midnight shrugged. "Just lie down and try to empty your mind. I will take care of the rest."

In response to this, I started to comply. I fulfilled the first request quickly, but I couldn't seem to rid any of my racing thoughts voluntarily. Midnight seemed to notice this as he loomed over me, slowly raising his hand. Within a second of doing so, I began to feel my mind dull and my consciousness slipping away. The last thing I saw before my eyelids became impossibly heavy was Midnight finalizing his spell, lowering his hands by degrees.

An instant later I pulled myself up, finally inside the labyrinth. Observing my surroundings, I noticed that I was inside the cave once more. Breathing a sigh of relief, I began to walk around only to run into Midnight mere moments after doing so.

My principal began to speak, but he did so in garbled speech. I signalled this by attempting to reply. "Midnight, I can't understand you..."

Midnight shook his head and gestured for me to follow him once more. Doing so, I discovered that we would both need to run through the entire corridor once more. Before I could verbally refuse, however, Midnight was already several paces ahead of me. Grunting, I began to run after him.

We happened upon the palace once again, this time with a bit more time than last night. I was once again mesmerized by the size of the gargantuan structure, paralyzed before I was alerted by Midnight. My principal pointed toward himself and me, then toward the back end of the palace. Understanding that Midnight wanted me to enter the back end of the palace, I began to follow Midnight's lead once more. Investigating further as we moved, I was able to make out some more features the I couldn't do so standing far away from the palace. In particular, I now noticed that the figures I had seen the night before looked almost like one of my race, with a much darker shade of indigo skin than I possessed. I couldn't make out anything more, however, and I redirected my attention towards Midnight after shaking my head. I suddenly realized that Midnight had stopped moving and was seated upright, his eyes closed and posture impossibly rigid. Deciding not to bother Midnight, I slowly backed away, keeping an eye on our surroundings. There was not much that was noteworthy about our current location, as we had relocated ourselves to a relatively secluded alleyway. On one side were the natural stone walls of the cave, and the other housed solid walls that were manufactured from an unknown metal. Inspecting it further, I also noticed that the wall, no matter where I looked, exhibited no scratches or dents whatsoever.

"Feste." Midnight's voice rang behind me. I whipped around and he was now standing. "Can you understand me?" While he spoke, I noticed that Midnight's mouth did not synchronize with his speech, but he was now speaking the language that I knew. "This spell is fairly weak, but we should be able to talk to each other and skip having to run to the palace. That is if everything goes according to plan." He briefly paused, smiling when he realized that I was now able to understand my principal. "It was difficult to circumnavigate the numerous barriers, though. They all seem to originate from the top of the tower, too."
