Chapter 45 - - 45 -

It wasn't long before we woke up. For some reason, this night seemed to drag on much longer than others. Still, I embraced the calming sensations that my bed gave me as we both began to fade. We didn't manage to find Boingo, and I started to wonder how far Midnight managed to descend into my labyrinth.

I put these feelings aside as I started my day, abiding by my routine. Exiting my room brought me the sight of an ordinary amount of students that were going to start their days. Joining this crowd, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was being observed.

Shortly before I reached the classroom, I was stopped by a figure in the corner. From his gaze and dark clothing, I immediately recognized Midnight. He beckoned me over to the small, uninhabited corner and I obeyed.

"Did you feel anything?" He started, looking just as affected by sleep inertia as I was. "I was being careful not to disturb you any more as you kept talking."

"No," I shook my head, "not at all. I didn't feel a thing, but I kept bracing myself for something." A chill crept up my spine as I remembered the intense pains that I'd been forced to endure, realizing that I might need to go through it once more eventually.

"That's good." Midnight peered around. Nobody seemed to take notice of us. "How has your morning been so far?"

"Average."

My principal nodded. "That's fine, I suppose. Today's a big day for me, even considering my usual job of running everything around here."

"A big day?" I stared in awe.

"Yes. I can't say much about it if you're going to ask me to elaborate."

I rose my head. "It's probably nothing I should be poking into, anyways."

"That's right." Looking at his hand, Midnight now held a mug that I was certain had not existed until this very moment. It contained a dark, steaming liquid. "You'd better head off to class, then."

Turning away from the corner, I caught a glimpse of Midnight taking a sip of the liquid as his eyes narrowed. Taking a seat next to Boingo, I knew that class was going to start soon.

"You lost me again." Boingo was exceptionally frustrated.

"Sorry." The creature had successfully made my heart race. Now with my notebooks displayed and my writing utensils out for additional convenience, I turned to face the small alien. "I think you just took a wrong turn somewhere."

This only partly calmed Boingo. "I bet you were with Endora again."

Bracing myself for the worst, I slowly nodded. "That's because we were lucky, though -- I could have just as easily run into you instead."

Boingo rolled his eyes. "Whatever."

The rest of the day was remarkably ordinary; out of all the subjects in the school day, only one stood out. This was, of course, Magic. Mr. Grey had once again slowed time so he could fit in more spells into the regular lesson. He had insisted that I was going to be the target for another attack and when I countered him saying that the day had gone well so far, he defended himself by saying that it was only a matter of time.
