Chapter 34 - HURT PEOPLE HURT PEOPLE .

Two days after Denzel and Phyllis arrived home, Mrs. Richards after she had served her husband a meal, she joined him on the table and requested to have a talk with him so he told her to allow him finish eating so that they would take a walk as they talk so that they would get some fresh air and exercise their legs as well. When he opened his meal, he was all smiles because it was his favourite local dish which he hadn't been served in a long while. Though the food was appetizing, he was concerned about the motive behind it being served when she wanted to have a talk with him.

"Does she want money?" or "Amelia is in trouble". That's what he thought just until he was about to take his last morsel, he got frightened and stopped eating. He began to ponder on the relationship between his wife and how it had been for a while and started shivering when the thought of her going to request for a divorce flooded his mind. Though he didn't love her like Felicity, Denzel's mother, he realised how deeply he was attracted to her and wasn't sure how his life would be without her.

She came out of her room to clear the table already dressed in her tracksuit and pair of Airforce sneakers to match. She requested him to also go inside to wear something appropriate for the walk but he held her hands and took her to their bedroom so that they could talk. He asked her to sit on the couch in their room as he also sat on the bed so that they could both face each other to have a sincere talk. Just when he was about to ask her what she needed to talk about, he found her on her knees and bitterly crying with remorse. He was shocked to see her in that state so it took him time to come back to his senses to calm her down and to help her sit again.

He moved to sit close to her in the couch so that he could comfort her. He felt sorry and broken though he had no clue as to what was going on at that moment. She held his hands which were shaking out of fear for what she was about to say. Looking at him, she said

" I have some confessions to make to you, kindly find a place in your heart to forgive me. I would understand if you decide to divorce me after this . Though I will be affected, I will find peace again. "

( He wasn't at a loss anymore. He knew she was going to talk about her relationship with his former Accountant and the attempted murder on Denzel, his son but he wanted her to say it to him by herself so that she would be able to forgive herself and find peace. She needed these to be healthy since she was growing old. )

So he pretentiously asked her what had been eating her up to the extent of making her cry.

I have a lot to tell you, she said. Please listen attentively to me without interrupting me.

I was in a relationship with your former Accountant for three years until he was arrested. I convinced him to divert some funds and keep my share in an account I had opened. This had been going on for eighteen months until Phyllis found out during one of her regular visits and audits into your business account. He approached the Accountant who tried to kill her but couldn't succeed. I later found out from the Accountant that Denzel had taken over her investigations and that made me more angrier since I had learnt that you had him in your will and upon further investigations found out that he was your biological son so I got him abducted. The thought of him having a share of your property and the fact that I never enjoyed this marriage because of the love you had for his late mother even provoked me more. I have been battling with this guilt for years and I feel I should let you know.

I regretted all those things I did when I got sober and realised I allowed anger and jealousy to get the best of me. I am so sorry and even if you decide to give me to the law, I wouldn't hold a grudge against but all that I am begging for is your forgiveness.

He broke down into tears and also knelt down to ask for her forgiveness from her because he was as guilty as she was. He had never loved or paid attention to her ever since they got married though all her financial needs are taken care of. He had transferred the anger he had for his parents to her especially when their marriage led to the death of Felicity. They only got cozy in front of their daughter or other people just to show to them that they're a perfect couple but they've never been a couple in the many years they've been married. He couldn't bear a grudge against her for cheating on him because they had not had sex for the past sixteen years and he even commended her for being faithful to him all that while.

" Who wouldn't be angry with a man, whose mother had deprived her of her husband's love and joy in her marriage?"

" Who would be happy to know that, her step child who had robbed her of her husband's love had a share in her husband's will and be happy about it?"

" I am sorry for turning you into a bitter adulterer and a vicious woman because I failed to love and treat you as my wife. I had known all these for a while now but I couldn't punish you because I was responsible for all that you had done." Kindly find a place in your heart to forgive me and accept Denzel as your child. I know you're a good woman and these mistakes can't define who you are. I have seen how much you love Beryl and love to take care of her. I am grateful for showing her that much love. Thank you so much. I promise to make up for our lost year and make you enjoy your marriage in your old age. I promise." He then got up and hugged her. They both remained in their bedroom and continued to talk until they fell asleep. They both slept peacefully and they enjoyed their sleep. None of them had ever enjoyed his or her sleep like they did ever since they got married.

They woke up the next morning with a glow on their faces. Amelia noticed that her mother was glowing and was all smiles as she joined the dinning table for breakfast. She was so surprised and wanted to know what was going on with her because she hardly sees her in that manner except when she brings a good news home. Whatever it was, she was happy that her mother was happy. Mr. Richards had gone out very early in the morning to prepare for a meeting with some new prospective customers. She and the children stayed home and had a nice time together as they cooked, watched movies and had some discussions. She had never been this happy ever since she got married. Denzel felt comfortable around her and was beginning to love her too.
