Dimond pushed the dorm door open, she was just going to get a jacket so that she could go for a moonlit walk with Barry. She stared in front of her. Rainbow was unconscious on the floor. She ran over to her little cousin worriedly, taking Rainbow into her lap. She brushed Rainbow's fringe out of her eyes, shaking her gently.
"RB… Wake up…" Her voice wobbled slightly as she mumbled it, pulling her cousin close. She noticed some melted coloured goo on the floor and realised what it was. Rainbow had tried to get the nails off. She could've just asked her to take them off. Dimond lifted Rainbow's hand, noticing her nails. They were slightly discoloured and she could feel the magic flow in them trying to revive the nerves in the ends of her fingers. What had she done now? Her mascara was smudged too, likely from crying or panicking… probably both. Dimond shook her again lightly. Rainbow's eyes opened a crack, seeing Dimond and instantly becoming worried. She sat up and scooted away from her. Dimond looked at her curiously, noticing her eyes focused on something behind her. She turned around to face the door and saw the dark black scorch mark left behind on the wall. Dimond turned to glare at her. "What is that?" She demanded, needing to know why Rainbow had blasted the wall, potentially exposing herself.
"It's… um… it's a scorch mark…" Rainbow answered dumbly. Dimond rolled her eyes. Was she serious right now? She gave Rainbow an annoyed look. Her cousin tensed. "Um… okay… so… don't get mad, but… I *might*, emphasis on might, have accidentally… sorta, maybe, lost control of the magic again…" Rainbow sheepishly continued, holding up her hands as if it would calm Dimond down.
"I can't believe you did this!! Everyone's going to be asking how this happened! What am I supposed to say? Sorry, Rainbow blew up a toaster?!" Dimond scolded, throwing her arms up in the air to emphasise her frustration with Rainbow. Rainbow's eyes welled up and her lip quivered, causing her to bite it.
"I'm sorry." She whispered, voice cracking. Dimond sighed and hugged her, after all, nothing bad had happened. This wasn't the end of the world, she told herself, a bit of paint should fix it right up… Rainbow's small body was trembling as Dimond held her, clutching her shoulders tightly. "Please don't hate me too." Her voice spoke, barely audible. Dimond sighed.
"I don't hate you Rainbow. I'm just frustrated at you. You know the consequences if you're found to be a magic user and yet you keep testing the system anyway! I'm just worried that you're going to lead the both of us to an early grave." She lectured, letting Rainbow go and standing up to observe the damage. Rainbow shakily got to her feet behind Dimond. "What happened?" Dimond asked softly, not turning to Rainbow to see her.
"Barry." Rainbow croaked quietly. Dimond sighed, it was always Barry. "And sort of Gary…" Rainbow's voice interrupted Dimond's thoughts. Gary? That new kid that Barry was always cursing about? Come to think of it, Rainbow had actually mentioned him several times before. "Barry wants me to stop seeing Gary, but I like talking to Gary because he's like actually trying to be friendly and no one is ever interested in being my friend… but now I'm talking about it, maybe he's just getting closer to me because he wants to be with you… or Barry…" She rambled. Dimond started to zone out. Rainbow's problems were always over-complicated by her personality and most of the problems would be easily solvable if she didn't have the social skills of a goldfish.
"How are we going to cover this up?" Dimond asked, still staring at the wall. She knew she'd interrupted Rainbow's ongoing rant but also knew that she could rant for hours, and they didn't have hours. Rainbow pouted slightly, deflating noticeably.
"I… I, um, could use a cover spell… if you could get me up there…" Rainbow suggested quietly, evidently put off by the interruption. Dimond eyed her and then searched the room. What was stable enough to be stood on? Her eyes landed on the chair in the corner of the room.
"We could use that." Dimond suggested, picking up the chair and placing it down in front of the door, wobbling it to check it's sturdiness. Rainbow eyed the chair warily. "Come on. How does the cover spell work, anyway?" Dimond asked, trying to check if it would actually work in this scenario. Rainbow stepped up onto the chair, but realised that she couldn't reach the top of the scorch mark.
"Well… I have to draw an outline around the area I want filled in with magic," Rainbow started, lifting herself onto her tiptoes to reach the top of the mark. Dimond watched as she started to draw around the mark with her glowing finger, leaving a trial of rainbow sparkles behind. "And once the outline is completed, it ah-!" She was interrupted by the chair wobbling. Dimond quickly grabbed it, steadying her. "It fills it in with magic," Rainbow continued, as the outline completed and the scorch mark disappeared. Dimond's eyes widened, as the mark disappeared before her eyes. "Its sort of like camouflage, blending in with what's around it." She continued, evidently not realising that Dimond wasn't paying attention anymore. Rainbow stepped down off the chair, placing her hands on her hips and nodding at the good day's work.
"How long does it last?" Dimond asked, becoming concerned at the idea of all of the things Rainbow could have hidden from her. She could have hidden so many things from Dimond and she would have no idea that they even existed.
"As long as I want it to." She answered, as if hoping for praise as she proudly stood next to Dimond. Dimond's head was spinning. As long as she wanted? Was that the real reason why the bruises had stopped appearing over her? She'd never mentioned anything to Rainbow, and Rainbow had never mentioned anything to her, but there had always been bruises and scars. Until they'd disappeared a couple of months ago. Now she was thinking about it, it was more like a year ago… She turned to her proud cousin and hugged her quietly. Things hadn't gotten better. In fact, if anything, they'd gotten worse.
