When Rainbow woke up that morning, the rest of the girls were all giggling and gossiping as per usual, but there was a different atmosphere in the room. They were asking each other what outfit they should wear, doing each other's hair and generally being excited and giddy. Rainbow groaned realising what day it was. Valentine's Day. She pulled her duvet over her head in an attempt to get some more sleep but unfortunately, Dimond had spotted her.
"Come on RB! How is a guy supposed to ask you out, if you won't even get out of bed?" Dimond taunted. When Rainbow didn't move, Dimond took the initiative to pull the duvet off of her, exposing her to the cold morning air. Rainbow grabbed it tightly, fighting for control again. Dimond groaned. "Why don't you want to get up? Valentines is the best day of the year!" She coaxed, trying to grab Rainbow's arm and pull her out of bed.
Rainbow didn't want to get out of bed on the best of days, let alone Valentines. It always reminded her that no-one loved her. The rest of the girls could go out with their partners on dates, but she didn't have a boyfriend. She used to spend the day with Barry, when they were younger, but now he was dating Dimond.
It wasn't like she got much affection at home either. Her mother hated her, Derek was constantly at work, so when he did come home he was too exhausted to give her any affection, Starlight definitely did not "love" her, Lily was too depressed to notice her and the other kids were too young to understand how to love.
Every year they were forced to make Valentines cards at school, and give them to people they appreciated. She hated it, all of Valentines. It was the one day a year when she felt worse than unlovable, she felt invisible. To make matters worse she had to watch every other person in the world be appreciated.
Dimond sighed and sat on the bed next to Rainbow. "Is this about Barry?" She asked quietly. She knew that her cousin had been absolutely devastated when she found out that Barry and her were dating.
"What?!" Rainbow asked, sitting up quickly. "This IS NOT about Barry." She answered sternly, giving Dimond a harsh look. She crossed her arms, frowning at Dimond's smug face. Dimond smirked at Rainbow's reaction to her question.
"If you say so..." she muttered, staring at her new plastic nails. Rainbow huffed at her response.
"It's not!" She argued, causing Dimond to smirk again. It was so easy to get under her skin, she thought. Rainbow huffed and repeated it again under her breath. She stared at her own, wrecked nails. She'd bitten them off the other day, to stop herself from harming.
"Well... since you're up now, you should probably get showered and dressed." Dimond smiled, as she turned back to Rainbow, who groaned at Dimond's suggestion. Dimond stood up and walked into the bathroom, leaving Rainbow alone with her thoughts once again.
Maybe this wouldn't be as bad as she thought it would...
