Chapter 2 - Hit the ground

*Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep.

"Why did I set that thing up again?"

Grant asked himself as he struggled to regain his consciousness from the embrace of his pillows. The sound of the alarm continued with its bizarre sound.

*Beep. Beep. Beep.

"Right, work. Didn't we just make a huge milestone yesterday? I'm sure the company could wait a few minutes."

He moved his hand over to his phone with practiced ease, the beeping stopping shortly after.

Before he could even pull his hand back, he heard a loud clearing of the throat.

"Oh, right."

He mentally sighed as he remembered the events of last night. With tired resignation, he rolled out of bed and fell on the floor.

*Thunk

"I'm up! I'm up! I'm up Mads. I'm, oh."

Looking up from his position on the floor, Grant was able to see his father pinching the bridge of his nose in frustration.

Standing up rapidly, he brushed himself off and straightened his back.

"Hello, father."

He said while trying to hide the nervousness in his voice.

"Grant, so glad that you can join us."

Richmond said without hiding 'any' of his sarcasm.

"It seems like you misunderstood something when I asked you to get up early today.

He said emphasizing the word early.

"N-no father. I had brew make me a sleep aid as a precaution."

"Then tell me."

He walked slowly towards Grant.

"What time is it?"

Grant was slightly thrown by the question but answered regardless.

"It's six father."

"What else?"

He faltered slightly. He could have sworn he'd set the alarm then. He gave his answer in a smaller voice.

"Six in the morning?"

Richmond stared Grant down with fire literally blazing in his eyes.

"It's two hours past four! When I said early, I meant early! Back when you were younger, six was the latest you would get up at!"

"I had magic then!"

He said while cowering under his father.

"And?! You need magic to get up in the morning!?"

"No, but it lets me walk without crashing into something before the sun comes up!"

Grant gave his excuse from his new pathetic position on the floor.

"Your eyes can adjust, can't they?! Get a move on!

At his father's order, he scrambled to get dressed as fast as possible.

Seeing this, Richmond went off to call another family meeting in his office.

It was only after his father's footsteps faded and he got himself dressed that he gave a sigh of relief.

"At least I know that my plan worked."

Grant scratched the back of his head before remembering to grab his cell. He weighed it in his hand for a moment before remarking.

"You'd think he'd ask about something like this."

He grabbed his belt and holster off a hook on the wall. Restocking his supplies and reloading the pistol he wore yesterday.

He passed by the ornate robes Madeline left out in favor of his armoire. Grabbing a cloak that could hide his holster, while being light enough not to disturb his plan. He went and pulled one of the arms to reveal a number of similar weapons behind a false wall. Considering for a moment, he decided to go for a tranquilizer that he seldom used.

Checking one last time to make sure nothing was out of place, he went out towards his new and probably unnecessary plan.
