Chapter 12 - Werewolf History?

"I have been meaning to ask you… What else do you know about werewolves?"

It was the day after my first day back to speech class, and I could not get the thought of having both Rae and Bree join us out of my head. It had me worried since I left class yesterday, I could not even sleep right last night at the thought of it. I had to come to Wes and get some answers while we were outside feeding the chickens.

We had built a chicken cage in his backyard for the twenty chickens that he has. They used to run freely around the house and sleep anywhere they wanted, on the roof, in the trees, and under the house until a hawk tried to make a meal out of the chickens. That day Wes and I watched the whole thing go down in front of his house. A hawk came and swooped down to grab a chicken but missed its target. It circled back around, but instead of trying to dive down and snatch one of the chickens, it landed and started to chase one of the hens under the house. That is when the other hens decided to jump in and attack the hawk. It was lucky that it was just the hens and not the roosters that decided to give the hawk the beating.

That was the first time we had ever seen a hawk get beat up by a bunch of hens. It managed to get away, but I bet you that it will think twice before coming back here and messing with any of the chickens.

Wes looked up and stared at the sky while still having chicken feed in his hand, "What else do I know about werewolves? Well, as I have already told you, the last known sighting of one on record is over 2,000 years ago. Once bitten by one, they are cursed to feed upon human flesh, and just like other shapeshifters, they cannot learn magic due to the curse."

Okay…

"I already knew that! I meant do you know anything else besides that?! Like their history or why is it that the last sighting was over 2,000 years? What is this spirit?"

Wes tied up the chicken feed and looked at me, "I don't know."

"I don't understand. How do you not know?"

"The history of the werewolves is long gone. It is as if it has been erased from the face of the Earth and no one seems to know why. This spirit had disappeared along with them and after all these years, it decided to show itself and give you, its power. It just doesn't seem to make any sense to me either."

It has me wondering now, what could have happened.

"I thought that the only way to become a werewolf was to be bitten by one or turn into one by a witch. So how does the spirit even come into this?"

"That is true if there was another werewolf around to give you its infectious bite, but there isn't another one. The ritual of the werewolf has also been lost, so that being said, no witch has the curse to turn you into one. As for the spirit, in other parts of the world with other shapeshifter's the only way to become one is by being bitten by the spirit themselves."

Interesting.

"So, there are others like me?"

Wes picked up the bag of feed, "Other werewolves, no. There are other shapeshifters in this world, but every day their numbers are dwindling. I would not be surprised if I overheard that another race of shapeshifters was wiped out. Last that I heard nine species have gone extinct. There were ten, but it dropped down to nine because of your existence and now you are on the endangered list. That being said, you need to be careful when you are out there."

"Why is that? Who would be dumb enough to mess with me now that I have been cursed?" I asked confused.

"There is a bounty on your head."

"What?! By whom? When was this? What did I do?! I haven't done anything wrong!"

"I know. It is not you personally. It is a curse. They are paying top money amongst witches and other monster hunters to bring them the head or better yet the person alive back with the disease, and for any witch to have information on one to turn it in, but I am not about to lose my only godson, the last member of my family to some witches."

"But why are they out to get me?"

Wes shrugged his shoulders, "I don't know, all I know is that it's mainly shapeshifters that they are after, and that means you need to watch yourself and not get caught."

He was right. All I could do now is stay out of sight, which should not be too much trouble since I am always here at his house.

"What about my abilities? Do you know how I can use them?"

Wes shook his head, "Sorry bud, but I don't have the answers for you. Everything that I have told you is all, it is up to you to find out what happened to their history and why this spirit chose you. As for your abilities, you are also on your own."

I sighed, "I wish there was a book or some sort of manual to this thing."

Wes patted my back, "Don't worry about it! You will be fine; besides, you have me here to help you out every step of the way."

He seems a bit over-excited about the whole thing.

"Why are you so happy?"

Wes wrapped his right arm behind my neck and pulled me in very… very… close to his face. We were cheek-to-cheek.

I could see from the corner of my eye that he was grinning from ear to ear, "The answer is simple, I have never seen a werewolf in person, so you have to understand that I am excited to know that one actually exists."

I squinted my eyes at him, "And here I thought I left Anthony back in Pasadena."

Wes raised his eyebrow at me, "Anthony?"

That is right, I have never introduced him to Anthony, "It's a friend of mine that is always trying to find the existence of witchcraft."

"Friend, wait you said earlier that you had something to tell me about your friends, what was it?"

"Oh yeah! I might have found you some recruits."

"Really?!"

I tilted my head to the side, "They actually said that they will think about it and give me an answer later on, and at the same time, it worries me. It is Bryanna and Regan; I do not want them to get hurt or put them in harm's way. It is also the reason I want to learn how to use my abilities, so I can protect them at all costs. I don't want to lose either one."

Wes gave me a warm smile, "You really care about them, don't you?"

I nodded my head.

"More than likely, it is the same reason why they want to learn witchcraft, in order to protect you because they; just like you do not want to lose you as well. Don't you worry, I will train them to be just as good as me if they do decide to learn? I do have one question, are you ready to reveal your secret to them?"

"I don't know. I am scared that they will be afraid of me and stop hanging around me. I don't want to lose their friendship either."

Wes still has his arm around my neck, "Well, there is only one way to find out, and that's by telling them."

Deep down inside I knew he was right. I am simply scared and afraid to know the answer.
