Fort Char was as different from Fort Balvier as Talmot was from Lorna. The building more resembled one of the many castles favored by the vampire lords than the wooden structure occupied by Commander Jeanu and his men. He briefly wondered what scandal Jeanu had wrapped himself up in that got the Commander posted to such a shoddy location.
Fort Char was a fortress. The stone walls surrounding the keep proper were high and easily defended by the soldiers who stood watch. Not enough watchmen, Talmot thought to himself while counting the soldiers who waved him into the sprawling courtyard. Several doors were leading outside built into the wall itself, dotting along the perimeter, and he tried to suppress a sigh that came a little too readily to his lips.
