Chapter 26 - Sacrifices and Regrets

The day it started in less than half an hour, one of the towns in Japan has been declared as "No survivors" and not a day has passed and the Prime Minister of Japan has already announced a state of emergency.

A satellite-based system called the J-Alert has been used just as soon as the Prime Minister has made his announcement followed by the deployment of Japanese Self-Defense Forces or JSDF in short, on areas that have been called "the borderline".

Although the J-Alert has been cut off abruptly, a few municipalities were able to warn the citizens, but a few municipalities were not as lucky.

Japan, who can be considered one of the most prepared countries in case of disasters, in less than 2 weeks has lost more than half of their population, despite the measures they have taken and only certain areas around the capital can be called moderately secure.

In the capital, inside the Prime Minister's office a man can be seen reading a vague report regarding municipalities that officially has been completely eradicated by monsters. There was also a report of "Daikaiju" roaming around the country.

The man was the Prime Minister of Japan and he couldn't help but massage the side of his temples as his head ached due to the increase in reports.

He had no choice but to ignore the pain he felt every time he saw a report about municipalities that were eradicated, He still had a lot on his plate as he tried his best to address the problems that aroused.

"Seriously? Not only do we have to deal with the undead, but we also need to deal with large monsters now?"

He could only order his men to monitor the monster even it seems like there were difficulties in getting close to the monster. There was also a discussion regarding the use of nuclear weapons, but that has been dismissed as the last option.

World leaders have formed some sort of council with the goal of finding measures to deal with the monsters it was, however, not fruitful as all they could agree on is not to use the nuclear weapons unless they had no other options.

The council didn't manage to discuss anything, aside from announcing countries that were on the verge of eradication or eradicated.

"How pitiful, we have been called as most powerful leaders in the world, but we're completely powerless in a real crisis."

The Prime Minister Kamiya Hisashi, thought to himself as he remembered the defensive position the JSDF were in. Japan's current situation was considered one of the best compared to other countries, but even Japan can only try their best to defend a portion of their country, reclaiming the country was just a fools dream.

Hisashi read another report when the door to his office abruptly opened by JSDF's Chief of Staff Aikawa Hyousuke. Seeing the worried look on his face, Hisashi immediately made the man sit on the chair in front of him before asking.

"What's the problem?"

The man in front of him, opened a laptop showing the map of the capital and its defensive lines before pointing at one of the areas before saying with a pale face.

"One of the Daikaiju is on its way towards here, there are at least tens of thousands civilians behind this defensive line. We've already called an evacuation in the area, but the its moving at an alarming speed. The only good news we have is the it is most likely to make that area its territory so the capital is relatively safe."

The Prime Minister couldn't help but curse the heavens, the continuous bad events have already been taking a toll on his body. He wondered whether the heavens have put a curse on him as he tried to think of ways to lessen the casualties.

The Chief of Staff didn't need to elaborate the problem as similar issues have happened in previous evacuation sites already. The civilians weren't evacuating fast enough, rather the monster was moving so fast that not every civilians would be able to evacuate the area in time.

His options were limited, he simply didn't have the time to order the other soldiers in different areas to assist the evacuation because they were barely able to hold their position.

He spent a little more time thinking before making a decision as he said.

"May the citizens ever forgive me. Tell the civilians to evacuate faster and order the soldiers to retreat."

Hisashi ordered the chief of staff with a pale face. He has more or less given the order to abandon the citizens, he made the harsh decision because they couldn't afford to lose any soldiers.

Only the fast civilians would be saved and the slow and old ones would most likely die especially when they had no means of transportation.

The Chief of Staff didn't condemn the Prime Minister's decision, as immoral as it was, it was a sacrifice they were forced to do for the rest. Hisashi didn't care whether historians call him cruel or heartless, his goal was for there to be a future for his countrymen.

Before the Chief of Staff left, he couldn't stop himself from comforting the Prime Minister.

"It was the proper call to make and those who lived today would understand why you made the call."

Hisashi could only smile bitterly at his words as he watched the man leave, he then proceeded to look at the map before ridiculing himself.

"There must a special place in hell reserved for me."

He thought as he looked out the windows only to see despair by the looks of those guarding his office.

Meanwhile, in the mall where Riku was resting.Yori along with three other men were sneaking towards the place where Riku's group were.

"Are you sure the man is injured?"

"Yes, I'm sure! I saw it with my own two eyes."

Yori was leading three men who weren't awake when they met Riku's group.

"Once I beat that man up the women are all yours to enjoy I promise!"

Yori persuaded the three to help him using the women in Riku's group, he initially liked the women, but his hatred for Riku was so great that he didn't care about them anymore.

Their plan was simple, they'll beat Riku up and leave him to Yori as the three enjoy the company of his women before forcing them all to leave. As for their group, they'd probably assume that Riku and the rest left early.

They were on their way towards Riku with bats and ropes in their hands, lust can be seen on the faces of the three while Yori was already imagining the scene of Riku, begging him for mercy.

Just as they approached them, they heard a growling sound and they felt the coldness invade their hearts. Yori felt a similar sensation before and fear crept into his heart. He started to regret and doubt whether they'll even be a match against Riku.
