Chapter 10 - One after another

[Processing the question]

[System has determined that the "First Survivor" deserves the information]

[Response to the question doesn't breach the protocol]

[The Earth's ecosystem will undergo massive change. The original plants and animals will evolve into man-eating organisms and species unknown to mankind will terrorize the world.]

[Word of advice! There will be consequences if the "First Survivor" spreads the information.]

Riku was sweating as he heard the response. He gathered his wits together as he processed and dissects any subtle info he could. From this answer it confirmed the existence of somebody or something creating the System. Whether it's an ally or an enemy, he couldn't tell and it didn't matter for now because he is still weak. What matters is that the zombies aren't the only threat that he'll face.

"Had I known that this would happen, I would've welcomed algebra with open arms." He ridiculed his past self for thinking that studying was extremely hard.

It was unnerving to imagine something even worse than the current situation, if it wasn't for the fact that he still had some time he might've just taken his life right there at that moment.

He was just about to delve deeper into his thoughts when his phone vibrated. He checked to see whether he got any messages only to realize that it was the alarm he set up an hour ago.

"Since we are now in a pretty safe area, I should probably check the news. " He thought as he used his phone to search for any information while phone batteries are important, especially when the electricity wouldn't be generated at some point. As he browsed his phone for news, he could see evacuation centers in different areas, only to be followed by a relocation notice after a few hours.

"I guess it's hard even for hundreds of thousands of personnels in JSDF to not only protect the citizens, but to defend probably against millions of zombies."

"Cops probably decreased as well, it seems a huge number of cops had to die before they realized the severity of the situation."

He couldn't help but assume the worse, there's no real way that the Japanese government would be able to maintain order throughout the country, hell it'll already be an accomplishment if they managed to defend the area the capital. Based on the news only the capital is truly safe.

No one knew what the origin of the zombies is, the only additional information he got is that they started on small areas.

"The village in the news was probably one of those areas." He guessed while regretting the fact that he didn't continue watching, his parents probably would've still been alive. Just as he thought of this his passive skill removed that negative feeling.

"Harsh, but convenient." He thought to himself before once again looking at the news. There's a mass hysteria going on not just the ordinary citizens, but even the government officials. People are isolated if they have even the smallest wound possible, whether it came from a bite and scratches or not didn't matter, if there's a wound you're gonna be isolated for under 48 hours.

It may not be surprising to some, but everyone was complying in fact, some asked to be isolated because they were afraid they'll turn into a zombie.

With all the local news being the same he decided to look at the international news. Countries like Taiwan, Madagascar and Papua New Guinea which didn't boast that much military strength, they also didn't have a neighboring country that they could flee to unlike other countries are, if not completely, so close to being overrun by zombies. As a matter of fact, calls for help sent worldwide by the government of Madagascar was the last thing heard from the country before all communications were cut off.

Every country is in a state of turmoil, supermarkets are being raided, crimes are increasing.Governments had to give up various parts of their country. There were no countries doing any better than Japan. Riku with nothing else to do just continued to browse through his phone.

After some time Riku, Eliza and Stephen were sitting on a sofa as they ate canned food as they started discussing their plans for the future. Stephen didn't want to leave the house anymore, but Eliza wanted to go somewhere downtown that has multiple nearby stores. This was how it was throughout the day.

"So, are we gonna stay here or are we gonna look for a sturdier shelter? I for one think that we should just stay here, it may not be the toughest shelter, but a shelter's a shelter. Besides, it's dangerous out there." Stephen suggested.

"There's a lot of problems if we stay here, the house aside, our only source of food and water is the convenience store which is quite a distance from here, we therefore can't carry that much food and water otherwise we'll be caught by those zombies." Eliza reasoned out.

If Riku sided with one side the discussion will probably be over, but the two of them provided reasonable arguments. As someone who went outside, he saw how dangerous it was outside while it's easier to go out alone, they couldn't exactly send one person to gather supplies because of the weight and the distance between the house and convenience store. They could send two people, but they can't leave Eliza alone in the house, especially when there's no order.

Sending Eliza outside is also extremely risky aside from the fact that she isn't athletic, the store was just that far, even for Stephen, who is quite fit will get tired after walking back and forth while carrying canned food for nearly 5 miles. It's not just the distance they have to consider but the psychological pressure of the zombies can drain most of their energy away. The house they were in was just that far, that is why Eliza wanted to look for a different shelter.

"Why don't we see how things will be outside tomorrow first, for now let's just go to sleep" Riku suggested. Realizing that their discussion is fruitless they simply nodded before going back to their own rooms.
